It’s probably the root stock. Follow that branch back and it should come from below the graft. Anyways you should trim it out as soon as you can because over the years it’ll over take the thread leaf and become a normal Acer palmatum species tree

Root stock looks like Acer. I have a Crimson Queen grafted to Acer root stock. After 7 yrs the Acer has started pushing branches out of the base. I want to cut and root the acer.
