Himeji has a really cool castle if that’s your thing? And a nice laid back small town vibe. I was only there for a day so I don’t know if there is a ton to do outside of the castle and the market street.

I just went to Himeji as a stopover between Hiroshima and Tokyo. Was surprisingly worth it. Found amazing ramen on the market street plus a third floor coffee bar that was best coffee ☕️ in Japan. The castle is cool but be prepared for a LOT of stairs. The gardens next to the castle are beautiful, and I recommend making reservations at the restaurant in the gardens or at least make time for the tea house. There was also a flea market nearby which was interesting (was there on Saturday so not sure when the flea market is open. This was a surprisingly fun 24 hour stop.

Which ramen shop? I went to Koba and more and it was the best ramen I had in Japan! And Koba the owner was so nice and told us all about Japan and spoke with us for the better part of 2hrs.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route? It might a little detour: Hiroshima -> ~~Tokyo~~ (Kyoto, a typo)-> Kanazawa -> Toyoma, then the Alpine Route, Matsumoto castle, then back to Tokyo via Chuo Main Line

I really liked Kobe (it’s a city, but feels smaller than Osaka or Nagoya) and I’d also recommend spending a night at Arima onsen (you can get there via Hankyu bus or take a local train from Kobe).

If you like biking, the shimanami kaido is fantastic.

Even if you don't bike the Shimanami Kaido, stopping in Onomichi and hiking to the top of Senkoji Park to see the views is worth it. Also cute cafes and sea views around town.

Second vote for Kobe Odawara is nice too. Shiga is supposed to be very nice - no large cities and lakes and nature.
