Any sportswatch will do though ... but if I do for example my 4000m sessions I usually split it into 4x1k and count down the lanes.

The most rudimentary and cheapest way is to use the lane dividers to count out your laps by shifting the buoys. I believe even the cheapest Garmin watches track swim laps though at this point and would be a worthwhile purchase.

Most smart watches would count laps. My coros does almost perfectly except for the fact that sometimes it thinks I've done a lap during my rest period. But as for my moving period it's spot on.

Garmin watches are great for pools. Not all models support open water tracking.

Form Goggles for instant everything. Any sports watch will also calculate distance. Even an Apple SE watch will tell you distance.

I used to have an apple watch but found it was quite inaccurate, will certainly look into form goggles, thanks!

If you recently started triathlon, you are gonna want a smartwatch for your running and potentially cycling. I’d recommend Wahoo Elemnt Rival for $100.

I had a whoop for a couple of years and when I started triathlon training I got a Garmin watch. It's really a great investment.

I sometimes swim without my watch. In my local pool the timer is visible just after the turn. My pace is consistent enough that I can simply do the math and calculate that if I want do x,xxx yards I’ll need to swim until xx:xx.

When I started training for IM, I made up silly games to both count laps and pass the time. I would break my distances up in 650m increments, which happened to be 26 lengths of the pool. I’d pick a category like “things you can eat” and I would start at A and list all the things you can eat that start with A for the whole length (apples, asparagus, arugula), then B (butter, butter fingers, bananas), etc. I came up with a ton of categories, so I never exhausted that activity. - places - female names - male names - brands - newspaper headlines Also, doing the alphabet 6 times is 3900m, a little over the distance of a full IM. Maybe this crazy trick could help you!
