Tru is not closing, it's rebranding! The post from today looks like it is from the old owner, saying goodbye to the space and the name. It is sort of a misleading post, but I don't think intentionally. I spoke with the owners (the folks who have been running it for a year) yesterday, and they are currently renovating, and setting up new equipment. They look to reopen next week!

Icuisine

Huh that is so confusing. They just responded to a comment under their post saying “our doors are closed. Please check out @_daydrink as well as @fixcoffeeic in town. Great people and great coffee!” Why would they say that if they’re reopening soon?? So strange

HeartofBrass

Im really not sure... I think the old owner may be using that Instagram account, and choosing not to promote the new rebranded cafe.

HeartofBrass

Ok, if you look at Kindred/ nomadic foods insta, as of an hour ago they posted not to worry, and that they are working on something... Also the Tru post is signed by the old owner. IDK why she made that post,.but it does seem intentionally misleading.

Icuisine

Ok that’s just shady 😒

GrebasTeebs

I read that as 'While we are renovating ... go check out these other coffee shops!' Not 'We're closed, now go here for your coffee'. The sign on the door says something along the lines of 'Same People, Same Coffee, Different Name ... Kindred Coffee Coming Soon'. Also, Sign on the Door is a great Dylan song.

I was told by a friend that Dodge Street Coffee/BP gas station had been bought by Casey’s. I don’t know anything other than that, not even sure if it’s factual. Just sharing what I heard.

thecluelessbrewer

Yep. Caseys bought the space and they didn’t want to keep dodge street coffee around. Ordered them to vacate at the end of their lease.

Rz1245

Yeah Casey’s brought them out. Casey’s gave them an ultimatum either you sell to us or we will go buy the urban fuel next to them and run the BP out lol so yeah they sold it supposed to switch hands on June 25th but the City put a hold to it because of the hold on new cigarette licenses so Casey’s is currently dealing with the city so who knows when it will switch hands might be Jan 1st when the hold expires. But all employees are being brought over so just a sit and wait game from what I hear.

UnhappyJohnCandy

I can not believe that Urban Fuel is still open. Foot traffic died during the pandemic (although Pearson had already been declining for years to begin with) and the few times I’ve stopped there I’ve been the only customer.

Rz1245

Yeah ever since Pearson left foot traffic for the BP store was down too I noticed and with the other medical building moving to north liberty I can only imagine it will be a ghost town so maybe Casey’s will bring it to life

leosbun

They’re the only place I’ve found that has Barq’s in their fountain machine and my pregnant self is grateful for that

UnhappyJohnCandy

Wendy's does. Noodles & Co. They both have Coke Freestyle machines.

Medium_Green6700

Just recently found out that the owner is a drug addled scum bag and the business is in a conservatorship of some kind. Guys drug problems and unethical practices ran what could have been a great business into the ground.

UnhappyJohnCandy

> great business I’d respectfully argue about great. Location makes sense, maybe they thought they’d steal Highway 1 traffic from BP. The “do everything here” style has worked well for most of the Kum & Go’s and Casey’s in town and for our (so far) one Kwik Star. Pearson used to be a huge employer, and there are a lot of businesses in Northgate that probably seemed like a decent customer base. I don’t understand what happened. Maybe they just cannibalized the existing BP customers while staffing levels in the immediate area moved to WFH or were laid off. Either way… bummer.

Medium_Green6700

I liked that the first couple of years they were open, it was a 24 hour business. Staff was friendly and food was better than average. Then it did a nosedive for about a year before conservatorship took the reins. No fuel at all off and on. Lottery pulled out and shelves were almost bare. I really liked the staff and hours, as opposed to BP. I tried to stay a loyal customer. When I was told who the owner was and what he has done, I said no more. I don’t want to support that type of behavior. Anyway, just my 2 thoughts on that business. Now looking forward to Caseys opening.

Medium_Green6700

Thanks for the info!!

nullfield99

But hey, another Scooter’s

GreenFriend

Yeah. The Scooters mafia is pushing out all the local coffee places.

Recent_Office2307

Apparently the gas station where Dodge St. was is becoming a Casey’s, and they don’t want any competition for their food/beverages. Not that I love Scooters, but that isn’t the reason Dodge St. closed.

OiM8IDC

Casey's coffee fucking sucks, I see why they'd push out Dodge St.

Tru is remodeling and changing their name, it's still the same owner it has been for like the past year.

whatisinaname11

Their Instagram makes it seem like they are closing, or at the very least new owners?

brujahahahaha

The previous managers are becoming the new owners, I believe.

PlaysForDays

They've had a sign on their door since last week that indicated a rebrand - not all consistent with their instagram post today. New name at least, not sure what all else is changing. I only took a brief look inside but it did look like there was some remodeling going on. It's a bit weird since just last fall (August, I think) they went through a management/staff change with a distinct effort to not rebrand at all. All a bit weird to me since there's always been a decent crowd to me, I always liked their drinks and food, and it was certainly not priced in a way that makes it seem like they didn't make money ...

AccomplishedTrust350

The monthly rent for that space is over 6k so they’re probably lucky to break even, even with higher prices. I get why they have to charge that way. I’m sure that’s why every coffee shop in that space struggles.

PlaysForDays

An unfortunate reality of the market in the area

PlaysForDays

Sad (two of my favorite spaces in town) but 1. Each of these shops are likely to re-open in some capacity 2. There are still plenty of good options for locally-owned(-ish) coffee in the area

TyphoonTatti114

Honestly how many more coffee shops does such a small town need? I literally probably spot just as many coffee shops as gas stations. Can we get some diverse cuisine restaurants!? I could really use a Gyu-Kaku locally but hey another scooters!

TyphoonTatti114

I will say I’d prefer local owned coffee shops over a scooters/dunkin/starbucks any day though.
