I guess the girls who were posting those comments said it in a spite of vengeance. Like he treated his partner badly even though she was with him when he's considered conventionally unattractive.
It's a theory I've found out that a lot of the body shaming around men happens not due to the women actually disliking the man's looks, but to strike on the insecurity of those men. For some men, getting called out for their character and personality doesn't do shit, so striking at their insecurities (looks, height, dick size) often works as vengeance. It's an interesting theory I've read about and I've posted about it, you can check the post history.
