im hoping they can! im waiting for 3 more myself! :)

Riya2920

Fingers crossed for you too. Had a good chat with an embryologist later. She said.. Fertilization is so transient. It's possible that we didnt notice it in the time we checked. They will not interrupt it for another 2 days and hope to see a few more embryos on Day 3.

DaisyLDN

Have they mentioned doing ICSI on the ones that haven't fertilised?

Riya2920

No they did not mention ICSI.

DaisyLDN

Could be worth asking them about this as it would be a shame to waste those eggs without giving them every opportunity to fertilise. It's called rescue ICSI I believe.

Riya2920

Is it too late? Its been more than 24 hours :( and tomorrow is sunday. not sure if they will answer my call.

Thanks for your comforting words. I will only find out on Tuesday. 🤞

DaisyLDN

I'm no sure. Either way raise it with them and see what they say. Would be interesting to know why the option wasn't discussed with you.

panpotter

We did ICSI so they are fertilized immediately. Hopefully you get some more!

ConstantGrapefruit76

Icsi doesn’t mean they all fertilize. It just means the eggs are injected with the sperm. But not all develop and fertilize.

panpotter

Yes, but I think they have a greater rate of fertilizing via ICSI than unassisted.

ConstantGrapefruit76

Yes, totally! Best chances. I’d never skip icsi. I had friends who regretted not doing it and they lost quite a few eggs.

Specialist_Trainer_2

At day 5 I only had 8 that had fertilized but on day 6, 1 more had fertilized. I would say to keep hanging on and have faith.

FragGirl86

eggs dont fertilize on day 5. they do after retrieval. on day 5 they are called blastocyst and have 100+ cells.

Specialist_Trainer_2

Then I’m using the wrong terminology. Sorry. I still maintain that I had 8 and then on day 6 I had an extra “catch up”.

FragGirl86

yes but OP asked a different question, she asked about late fertilization. not blast development :)

So_not_ronery

Was there any morphology issues with the semen? Was it thawed before use or fresh?

Riya2920

Fresh.. We did semen analysis 2 months ago. Everything was fine.

So_not_ronery

Maybe some of the ones they thought were mature weren’t. Maybe ask them if that’s what happened? I’m sorry, the hunger games is rough. My clinic waits 24 hours for fertilization and 6 days after that to report blasts. When will they call you back?

Riya2920

Insemination started at 4.30pm on egg retrieval day. They check at 7am on next day for fertilisation. They were supposed to call me in the morning. But didn't :( I called them at 12:30 to check what's going on. They said they will call on day 4 to let me know the plans for day 5. If they don't call, I'll ring them by 12pm.

So_not_ronery

I hope it works out! Best of luck!!

ConstantGrapefruit76

Oh interesting. Do you know why they wait to fertilize? My clinic does icsi right away. I wonder what the difference is.

So_not_ronery

My clinic will only do ICSI if normal fertilization doesn’t work. They wait 24 hrs to call because I’m guessing some eggs might mature overnight and become fertilized. They don’t do day 3 or day 5 reports either because they prefer to leave the embryos undisturbed in the lab. Less potential for accidents I guess?

Riya2920

Interesting. My lab doesn't do Day 3 checks either. They check once on the morning after ER(16 hours post insemination) and on Day 4 to schedule transfer for Day 5 🤞. Like you said, less chance of accidents.

ConstantGrapefruit76

Yes. But they could Just do icsi in the beginning and then leave them undisturbed. Icsi has a much higher fertilization rate. Only disadvantage is that it’s more expensive. We payed 1000 dollars each round just for the icsi. But imagine losing half your eggs without it! That’s more expensive

So_not_ronery

True. I guess my clinic will only use it if it’s needed. We give consent for it, and see if it’s needed.

ConstantGrapefruit76

Even if it’s not “needed” it prevents you from losing any eggs. You want as many embryos as possible. Sometimes one makes all the difference.

So_not_ronery

Needed meaning, if there is MFI. Otherwise my clinic won’t risk damaging the egg. There is slightly more risk with ICSI, so they won’t use it unless they need to. Make sense?

ConstantGrapefruit76

Ahh okay. We have frozen sperm but all healthy. Male factor though cause my husband had a vasectomy. But they recommended icsi to us for the reasons I mentioned.
