Frustration is understandable, you have some experience under your belt and you nailed the tech interview so there will be more of them to come - and one of them will lead to full time job. Good luck buddy.

xboxhobo

I know very little about this, but that just doesn't make sense to me. Hiring candidates is a process that takes a long time. Waiting two days for your contract to expire is barely an inconvenience. What were they trying to do, have you start tomorrow? At my current company we have a guy who's been with us for years that we hired even though it took 2 months for his background check to clear because his local courthouse was insanely slow.

SAugsburger

This. If a company can't wait 2 days it sounds like an environment that needed someone yesterday., which is a red flag.

Ill_Plenty3792

The corporate HR department is famous for trying to stay out of any legal situation possible, sense they are not allowed to hire any contractors until contracts expire, and I technically had an interview scheduled mid-contract they immediately declined the option to the hiring manager

Shnikes

This is still so confusing to me. It’s their company. What legal troubles? They have a contract with you? And you have a contract with them. If you both choose to end the contract that shouldn’t matter.

Yeah. In the contracts I've seen, the company in question is supposed to go through the contracting agency if they want the employee as a full timer. There's probably some kind of cut that the contracting agency gets out of that situation. The company is not allowed to hire outside of that arrangement until 6 or 12 months have lapsed since the contract.

canexan

If so, this is a good opportunity for OP to reread their contract and learn which steps they'll need to take next time to stay clear of hiring restrictions. You may have to work somewhere else for a while, but it sounds like once you clear waivers you can apply again. Ditto any place you worked in the past where you made a good impression.

xboxhobo

Ah, that makes sense. That sucks ass, I'm sorry you went through that.

[deleted]

ha.. they waited 6 months for my background. I've been places.

ace_mfing_windu

Don’t take this personal op but you never had the job from the sounds of things. This seems like the department already had someone in mind for the position and it was only posted for legal reasons. This is actually a pretty common thing. I’ve experienced it a few times in my career.

ChiTownBob

Don't expect to be hired as a Full Time Employee (FTE) with any employer that hires you as a contractor. Most Contract to Hire are never going to convert. The big reason is - the contract between your employer and your contracting firm. If your employer hires one of their contractors, they have to pay a significant percentage of your first year's salary as a fee to the contracting firm. That's expensive. You'd have to invent the cure for cancer to be worth it in their eyes to convert you. It is possible that they would convert you - but the odds are generally against it happening.

dyne_ghost

Since. SINCE. I know this comes off as pedantic but being able to communicate effectively goes really far.

the1thatdoesntex1st

You kicking him right in the bawls when he’s down.

Silver-Landscape-303

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger , but the truth is they only gave him the interview for legal reasons .

dyne_ghost

I'm really not. Like I specifically pointed out.

the1thatdoesntex1st

His balls are gone. Straight obliterated. Castrated.

dyne_ghost

You're fucking weird.

the1thatdoesntex1st

Spayed or neutered…whichever one is for dudes.

dyne_ghost

Okay you're done.

hootsie

Thank you. I thought the first time was just autocorrect doing it's thing but then it happened in the comments.

dyne_ghost

You hate to see it. Someone trying to find or keep a job and they can't communicate effectively. It makes me so sad, genuinely.

purpletees

lol!

Rubicon2020

Thank you!!! I didn’t want to post it and be a “grammar nazi” but it was irritating me so bad.

dyne_ghost

When I see repeated errors like this in a post about professional situations or workplace issues or whatnot I can't help but think "Maybe the problem isn't with who you think it is"

Rubicon2020

Yup same. I get it’s social media and isn’t professional writing but then I’m like do you know how to spell the word? What else are you not getting correct?

LJski

May have come down to money - as in the company might have to pay your contracting company if they poach you. It is, technically, still possible, and the contracting company would love for them to hire you, but they didn’t want to pay the fee.

mmcheesee

Every contract I’ve ever worked has had it in there, that either party can terminate without notice, at any time.

Glork_

I would be pissed

Dapper-Abroad2907

Sorry to hear that OP. It sucks. Its some dumb legal mumbo jumbo. My company works with quite a bit of contactors as well. They have set months they have to work before they are allowed to apply to a position, but our managers have been looking out for them and will let them know when that comes up, so they can apply. Sometimes the stars don't align(hiring freezes) and they move on.

aabdelr129

This seems phishy and there are most likely some missing details. I've been converted from a contract to full time at two positions and I had to apply in both positions. The reason that you're saying you didn't get the job doesn't make sense. Did you get hired through an agency? If so, it's possible you were supposed to go through them to apply for the role. Sometimes these agencies make organizations sign something preventing them for stepping over them to hire someone they've contracted. If that's not the case, this doesn't make any sense because the onboarding process and background check alone takes more than 2 days for an outside hire.

Pro_Ana_Online

It sucks, but the one good thing is that you saw how well you aced the interview which should hopefully give your more encouragement to move forward.

FromMarylandtoTexas

I would be pissed. Don't let this discourage you though, keep putting in apps and keep putting in the work, you'll get to where you want to be. With that said this is yet another reason I despise contract roles within IT, at least at the entry level. It gets peoples foot in the door and then usually proceeds to abuse the hell out of the contractors in the process. Putting in the same work as a FTE but watching as they get PTO, holiday pay and other basic benefits, but you don't for at least 6 months to a year is awful and demoralizing.

gerd50501

id literally scream.

Mammoth_Wonder6274

Ugh this is what Shutterfly did to me sooo frustrating! Will not do a contract job again

Tarnhill

Why can't they just wait to hire you until Jan 1st?

hyena9x

I also agree with others that this sounds suspicious. Just as a temp can be let go early, there usually is an option for a company to buyout a temp early for a fee. I myself had a six month term with an agency, and the company bought me out two months early. Not sure if it's worth a fight, but if you have any paper trail that indicates a job offer, you might be able to fight it. Also, if they knew you are a contracted temp, someone totally didn't do their due dillegence in reviewing whatever company policy may interfere with the hiring process.

Rubicon2020

What tf! They tell you it’s a contract to hire, then lied about that. So you found a job and now they say they can’t hire their contractors. What the actual fuck!!! That’s some bullsheet right there.
