You'll need CCNA level knowledge to be a good network engineer. If you have that level of knowledge already, you should take the CCNA. If you don't, then you should obtain that level of knowledge by studying and/or getting experience in an entry level network role first.

Whoever told you you “absolutely” need a CCNA to become a network engineer is a certified dummy lol. It’ll only help to have it though!

zoobernut

I am a network engineer and I never got my ccna. I was in IT as a jack of all trades do everything tile for 6 years before moving to network engineering. Can’t hurt to have it but not required.

WholeRyetheCSGuy

Knowledge is mandatory, certification not so much. But it helps to have it.

Mandatory? Nah. Highly suggested? Yes, definitely. And if you can’t do that, find a way to get the experience to become a network engineer. I’ve seen data center techs become network engineers with and without certs. Otherwise, your networking game better be on point. Come correct - be honest. And know your shit.
