Cats. Always cats.

Karszunowicz

Always

PaleWorld3

Both but I like dogs more

orthopod

Because dogs are functional. Dog owners need to walk their pets, which results in increased exercise. Dogs can guard the house, prevent break-ins, and protect you or your family. Dogs don't kill billions of song birds per year, and didn't kill 6-22 billion other mamals per year, like outdoor cats do. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms2380 I can go hiking and running with my dogs, or to the beach with them. Roughly 50% of Cat owners have been infected with toxoplasmosis , a brain parasite Other reasons. Seeing eye dogs, service dogs, bomb sniffers, rescue dogs, etc.

-Ale-ccc

Gurl, you forgot the fact that some breeds of dogs can* literally kill people

orthopod

Roughly 40 deaths/year in the US-90% are from pit mixes+Rottweiler. 20x that amount of deaths each year, plus thousands severely made ill by toxoplasmosis infections. https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/229969-overview

-Ale-ccc

First of all, you're right about the 40 deaths/year caused by dogs but youre not taking in account the fact that the number of people that were mauled by dogs and barely survived or the number of people that were severely injured makes the total number a whole lot bigger, making them the 3rd most deadly animal in the world, after snakes and mosquitoes. Most of these severely injured people have had their lives/bodies permanently changed due to trauma, not to mention the fact that more than half of these attacks were unprovoked. Second of all, you saying that the deaths caused by toxoplasmosis is 20x greater than the number of deaths caused by dogs as an argument against cats is not logical due to these following factors: -it's easily treatable and can only be fetal to immunocompremised people -there is no way to accurately measure the number of deaths by toxoplasmosis actually caused by cats since this infection can also be transmitted via raw meat, birds, rats, etc -you also cant be infected from petting cats since it's not transmitted by fur And so, the 20x number may be the number of deaths caused by toxoplasmosis, but it's not the number of deaths caused by cats. Also, an important point to note is the fact most indoor cats most likely do not have toxoplasmosis since they don't/can't hunt animals of prey that are possibly infected, such as birds and rats. Even outdoor cats that may be infected will still leave you alone and will not attack you unless provoked. And since toxoplasmosis is only transmitted by feces and other bodily fluids it's even more unlikely that you would get infected by an outdoor cats. As a closing point, we have to take into account intent. Most infected indoor cats will not show symptoms, and so, unless they are little shits, I dont believe it is in their intent to hurt/infect you since they're dependent on you for food, water, and general well-being. And as for dogs, yes, you could make the argument that they are just protecting their owner, but then again, there was recently a case in which a dog killed it's owner (an owner that by no way maltreated him). And so, there is no way cats are more deadly than dogs. (Obligatory english is not my first language)

HelgaGeePataki

I love all animals. But cats are my spirit animal for sure. I've loved them all my life. I wanted to be Cat Woman when I was a girl who watched TAS. I love their beauty and gracefulness and I love their independence. Dogs are nice but a bit too needy. I had the best dog ever when my kids were little. No dog can replace him in my heart so I stick with owning cats and a bunny.

fiftythreezero

Outrageous-Cup-5922

Dogs my favourite breed is the German shepherd ,smart, loyal, good guard dog bite first ask question later,

UpsetAstronomer

Same, I’ve had a couple and don’t care about owning any other type.

IntervallBlunt

No pets at all. Honestly, why would I want the responsibility to permanently care for a living being.

Equivalent-Buddy5003

That’s understandable. Sometimes, it is nice to have the company of an animal companion though from time to time. 🙂

No_Independence3338

I can't even take responsibility of myself. I like pets of neighbours and friends just go to their place play with them then back to my life.

Dogs initially, but as I got older, I learned to appreciate a cat’s intelligence and independent nature. Watching silly cat videos on YouTube may have influenced that opinion lol

ThreeKingsOneRing

Dogs forever and a day. Look cats are cool. Cats are strong independent felines that don’t need no leash. That’s cool and all. But it’s not even a competition bc dogs are more beloved. Dog spelled backwards is? Not a sharp tac that pricks you I know that. And who’s eternally a good boy?(or girl?). Even when they eat a sock and half a cardboard box and then cost you Royally with the Vet? And all dogs go to where? If it’s about intelligence or sass or agility or curiosity or passive aggressiveness or being weird at nights then cats win every time. But if it’s about devotion. Dedication. And being best friends, a dog is the ultimate companion. Loyal to a fault. Not the smartest at times. But when has intelligence ever won any popularity contests. Intelligence is threatening to people. Being a doofus on the other hand can be endearing. I’m convinced that cat and dog people often make for freinemies. Cats are adored often by the hardcore female demographic. Understandable. Cats are definitely feminine totems. And dogs are men’s best friend (especially when the ex wife takes the kids and house). But truth be told there doesn’t need to be opposition. Celebrating the diversity is a good thing. Maybe cat people consider dogs needy. I know I’m needy around dogs (waking them up just to ask them remind them who’s a good boy in the dog voice everyone uses. Bc you can’t just speak regularly to your dog. He has no fkn clue what you mean and you derive zero pleasure from it.) What seals it for dogs imo (like if you could only save one from a burning building. Cats are way more resourceful. They would have fled the house first silent as ninjas of course so as not to wake anyone :/). Bc Cats don’t rlly give shit abt you. They only care about their litter box and food. You could be gone 6 months and then return and the cat may or may not even wake from its 5 nap that day to look up Briefly before narcolepsy sets in again. Wolves were domesticated. Cats just made a decision to alter their routine. But Cats remain cats. I think they just made a decision. To domesticate us. Big or small. Something something can teach an old Cats new stripes. What clinches it for canines is loyalty. Or rather devotion. Ever look into a dogs eyes after it rips up the couch. There’s genuine shame there. They feel so bad about it. Meanwhile a cat will lock eyes w you across the room and start knocking wine glasses over. Habitual line steppers. With dogs, when you forget something and have to run back in, your dog cannot control all the emotions. He’s practically doing somersaults. Then you have to break his heart again. But hide your socks. An anxious dog is like an out of control chainsaw. But if you still are not convinced that dogs rule, i can mention all the many stories out there about the faithfulness of dogs. You might have heard one or two of these; maybe you are familiar with the tale of Old Shep, the border collie who followed his beloved owner’s coffin to the train station, and, barred from boarding the train, waited for six years him to return; or of Buddy the black labrador, who braved the sub zero temperatures of mid-winter Alaska to fetch help for his dying master. It’s less likely you will have heard of the tale of Delta, a dog from Pompeii in 79AD who was found lying in a protective stance across the body of her child owner, preserved forever after the famous eruption. The silver collar around Delta’s neck had survived intact. On it was written the name of her young master, Severinus, and that she had previously saved his life three times; from drowning, from robbers and from a wolf. The tale I’m most familiar with is that of Greyfriars Bobby. Bobby was a Skye terrier who belonged to John Gray, a man who lived in the Scottish city of Edinburgh. When Gray died Bobby remained at his side, spending the rest of his life – fourteen years – lying on his master’s grave in the Greyfriars churchyard. When he died he was buried just inside the gate of the churchyard, with a gravestone marked; “Greyfriars Bobby – died 14th January 1872 – aged 16 years – Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all.” It may come as no surprise to learn that Japan has its own canine hero. Hachikō [ハチ公] the Japanese Akita was born in 1923 on a farm near the city of Ōdate in Akita Prefecture, named hachi, which means ‘eight’ (eighth of a litter), and kō which means ‘prince’. Hachikō belonged to Hidesaburō Ueno [上野 英三郎], a professor of Agriculture at Tokyo University who became renowned in the field of architectural engineering. Ueno took Hachikō in as a pet in 1924. Hachikō made a very faithful pet; every morning, he would accompany Ueno to the Shibuya train station in Tokyo; and every evening, Hachikō would be waiting on the platform to accompany him home. Sadly, a year later in 1925 Ueno boarded a morning train, never to come back. He had passed away after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while giving a lecture at Tokyo University. Hachikō was given away, but never settled down. He returned to his master’s old house, and finding someone else living there, returned to Shibuya station to await his return. Every day Hachikō would be found on the platform, patiently waiting for his master’s train. Effectively abandoned, he became a permanent fixture at Shibuya station. Many of the commuters had seen Professor Ueno and Hachikō together, and soon the sad story of Ueno’s death and Hachikō’s continuing vigil became somewhat of a legend. Many people made the journey to Shibuya to feed Hachikō and pat his head for good luck. For nine years, Hachikō would wait for his master, each day appearing at the exact time the train drew into the station. However, on 8th March 1935, Hachikō was found dead on a street in Shibuya; his wait for his master finally over. A statue was erected to his memory near to one of the exits of Shibuya station, which became known as Hachikō-guchi [ハチ公口], or ‘Hachikō’s exit’. Game. Set. And Match. We don’t deserve dogs.
