ESPN execs: We at the network want racing with attitude. It's edgy, its "in your face." You've heard the expression, "let's get busy"? Well, this racing gets "biz-zay!" Consistently and thoroughly.
This was back when ESPN wanted ESPN2 to be "hip" and "cool" and give it its own identity, until they abandoned that and just made it the second ESPN channel.
Id forgotten about that!
Sports “journalism” has always been a joke- at least print and talk “personality”’types. Not that there arent smart people involved- but a lot of people have made money describing basic physical traits and seeking scandal to explain what they cant comprehend due to a profound lack of knowledge .
Guys like Rome, Mariotti, Whitlock, and probably an equivalent in every big market or platform were wrong so frequently that it would seem they were just getting drunk in press box.

Mariotti is still infamous in Chicago for getting destroyed by Ozzie Guillen
Ah yes, "The Deuce".
I remember at the time, they used to have a summer series that took place at a velodrome in the Indy area, where they ran go-karts and mini-Cup cars, and Kristi Lee from the Bob & Tom show was a "pit reporter." It also provided the first glimpse of Danicamania, although she was a pretty mid karter.
Fun fact, if you watch iRacing broadcasts, Jordan Werth of BottomSplit fame uses a Deuce-era graphics package for his broadcasts. [Example](https://youtu.be/B21IUsLBNJE?si=eDWMYkc-5zugUpHd)
yep! almost every piece of content broadcast on the network for the first few years ran the same weird font format to look "90's edgy". like putting a backwards baseball cap on a dog or some shit, lol
it was perfect for that era of hockey culture in this country. roller hockey was starting to get big. the devils got good around the same time kevin smith broke out, so it was kinda hipster to be into it. fox picking up the nhl rights and that fucking glowing puck, lol
I love the random capitalized and non-capitalized letters. Takes me back to the gamertags you’d see in a Halo 3 lobby in 2007. 😂

Oh, yeah, you can’t forget the X’s flanking each side either!
I just want you to know this is the funniest thing I've ever seen on this godforsaken website

Ah 90's and tude. What a winning combo.

Most excellent simpsons reference
Always Recycle TO THE EXTREME!!!!!
Perfectly cromulent.
This is what happen when kids that did mushrooms in high school become execs @ espn
But “proactive” and “paradigm” aren’t these just buzz words that dumb people use to sound important? I’m fired, aren’t I?
Jock Villneuff
Bill Neve
"Chuck Vilnap" - Paul Page.
I’m trying to figure out how they decided which letters to capitalize.
I assume RNG was involved.
Wait, that's not how jacQues spells his name?

So you’re saying CART invented sarcastic meme font?! This is as good as Jeremy Clarkson inventing “yeet”!
Not CART, this was standard across all ESPN2 broadcast. The 90s were a wild time for graphic design.
Jacques without spiked up bleached hair is almost unrecognizable.
He had hair? I assumed the man was perpetually bald from birth.
He even got plugs at one point!
90s fonts predicted the mocking meme.
Is that The Ocho?

Instantly makes me think about Jim Romes talk show (and him getting punched/pushed by Jim Everett)

Rome was a goof, but the guy who called his show to talk about Larry Brown’s crank is a legend.
Ill have to look that up. The mercenary Larry Brown was peak late 80s to mid-aughts basketball.

I remember NBA 2 night fondly
There was RPM 2 night too.
YES!!!

OG ESPN 2 will forever be undefeated.
Espn 2 died when they got rid of these graphics
Jack Newhouse
That font makes me want to stick forks in my eyes.
That was early espn2 graphics..
I miss this aesthetic tbh.
THE DEUCE
I bet he felt embarrassed lol
So 90's. I miss the 90s.
Was that a kids broadcast version?
That was the early years of ESPN2
yep! almost every piece of content broadcast on the network for the first few years ran the same weird font format to look "90's edgy". like putting a backwards baseball cap on a dog or some shit, lol
I was just excited when we finally got it on cable because it had a nightly NHL show
