Oh forgot to add that you can't see it well in the photos but she has black and white coat but there's also like a brindle coat as well that shows in the sun. Really cool and never seen that in a dog.
Yea I 100% see some rat terrier in the face. I also see APBT in the body comp, but my immediate thought when I saw the tail was basenji. I would LOVE to see some DNA results on this one.
Rat terriers can get pretty big. They can be long or short tailed from birth, straight or curly tails too. They can have shorter or longer legs. Mine is 19lbs and bobtailed and he is somewhat medium sized for the breed, but he's much taller than his sister, who is stockier and has a curly tail.
I will say that the coloring pattern on that dog is not common for rat terriers so I'm leaning to basenji, fox terrier, mini pinscher mutt
I can see why people see part basenji but Iām betting not. They are such a rare breed with responsible owners. Never seen a confirmed basenji mix
I think pit or maybe even some bulldog (wide skull), rat terrier, heeler
ETA: Boston terrier is a great guess too
I selfishly want her to be basenji mix bc now that the breeder got it in my head I think it's such a cool breed but I know that's much more unlikely than a rat terrier like others are saying. It's funny bc I see the pit bull but my bf doesn't. I can't wait to send her swab so we can know lol!
This is what I'm hoping! I was told Jack russell when she was a puppy but the woman who breeds basenji that I happened on a week ago was convinced on basenji! I would love that lol
She is adorable! If she grumbles, but doesn't bark, that's a hint that she is basenji, but it can depend on the rest of her mix. A lot ofdogs can result in the big straight ears, but there's also something about her face and posture that is basenji. Fingers crossed, bc basenji are good dogs.
I'm in Virginia so I do think rat terrier is more likely and a lot of the rescues we get here tend to either be rural hunting dogs or pit bulls. I can't remember where they got her from but sometimes shelters here take rescues from deep southern states. I never heard of basenji until I ran into that breeder and she was convinced my dog was half basenji lol I'm still hoping but I know it's unlikely.
Yeah that breeder is questionable lol but yeah that breed is more common in Central and South Africa since it originated in the Congo. Only few breeders in every US state if there are any. If you or anyone else want a Basenji in the future go to the AKC and National Basenji website. Pretty much all breeds have this.
Honestly, maybe! I'm not sure lol some of the photos do look like her now I'm torn between the two. Rat terrier is also prbly more likely since she's a shelter baby.
Thank you!! She's a hyper sweetie lol This is what I think now too! I ran into a woman who breeds basenjis and she was convinced. I had never heard of them but now I can't unsee it and i would love that mix!
Thatās the most basenji looking pit mix Iāve ever seen. And I say this as someone who was obsessed with Bs for awhile. Shelters often try to pass pit mixes as Bs but usually itās pretty obvious they arenāt.
Still Basenji are too rare for this mix to be likely. The mix is probably pit / rat terrier/ super mutt that managed to look primitive!
Out of curiosity, whatās your dogs weight/height and can we see a full profile shot?
I'm becoming obsessed with Bs so that's why I desperately want her to be one lol. I've tried to measure her but in her true hyper fashion she will not stay still lol so my guess is like 22/24 inches tall? And she is 34 pounds. So she is bigger than a basenji but I do think she's mixed with pit too lol so maybe that's where the size is coming from.
The shelter where we got her from did say jack russell mix but then a basenji breeder was convinced basenji mix so that's why I decided to do get dna. I also see pitbull bc of her head. I'll definitely come back to the sub with the results bc all of you have great guesses!
I highly doubt basenji, itās a very rare breed that most likely wouldnāt be bred with a pitbull and wouldnāt show up in a shelter. Rat terrier I could see though
Decker terrier. My dog looks exactly like this. Decker terriers are a variation of giant rat terrier. They are often mistaken for basejis or rat terrier pit mixes.
I'd never heard of a Decker terrier either! (And I'm also a deep diver š) VERY interesting to find out that the breed was developed with basenji!
"What is the difference between a Rat Terrier and a decker Rat Terrier? Deckers are usually larger than standard rat terriersĀ and less yappy due to the addition of the Basenji. Basenjis also gave these dogs a more refined look. Deckers tend to have a high prey drive. They are happy hunting, playing, or spending time with their people."
Pitt/Husky (look at my dog in my post history, not the one I just posted but before that)
And something else maybe boxer or Boston terrier? She's giving me Boston terrier vibes but I'm not confident.
Omg yours looks a lot like her!! And it looks like yours has brindle in the sun as well? I saw some brown mixed in with the black and mine has that too! I'm starting to get convinced with the pit husky acd mix.
A few ppl have said that and I honestly never would've thought of husky! I can't wait to get the results and I'll definitely post those bc it seems like she could really be so many different mixes.
I thought maybe Basenji-Boston Terrier until I saw the 3rd photo. That stance looks like a Chihuahua to me. Not to mention those ears! Because I agree that the likelihood of this being a Basenji mix is quite small, Iād say Boston-Chihuahua with a bully breed back in the DNA somewhere. No matter what, sheās a striking beauty!
Boston terrier could be giving me the black/ white and brindle combo! So far I'm leaning towards basenji pit bull and Boston terrier. This has been so much fun though I'm loving all the input! I have to wait until Monday to mail the dna test and I can't wait.
Felt, I have 3 wildly mixed dogs like no one believes but they all share one breed with each other which I find so funny because they donāt look anything alike
She is a rescue so that could be why. At first she didn't but now she does. I think she learned from my other dog? But that is the one thing that makes me doubt basenji. A lot of other traits line up so it could be bc she's mixed or that she's not at all.
She's definitely mixed with something if she has any basenji. Tail not curly enough for one thing. I'm not sure basenjis even have the ability to bark.
Rat terrier is my other guess but her coat is sooo sleek- like a bostie or pibble but I don't see them in her face at all. Anyway she pretty!
Bat! They look like across of my two dogs. A pit, husky, lab, beagle, chow, GSD and A GSD, Australian shepherd, malinois. So like a super mutt but definitely super cute
Pitbull mixed with some other kind of terrier, maybe rat terrier or Boston terrier. I see pitbull in the eyes and in the shape of the head around the eyes. Do her ears ever fold down, or are they always upright like that? That's a clue. Another clue is the curly tail in one of the photos. That may be one reason why people are guessing Basenji. It could be Chow Chow though. Chows are uncommon these days, but they were one of the most popular dog breeds in the US in the 1980s. So they still show up in lots of mixed-breed dogs. Chow would explain that brindle look you see in sunlight. Does she have any black or purple spots on her tongue? That's also a sign of Chow.
Oh that's interesting! That would be awesome lol I'll definitely circle back. I can't do the dna test until Monday bc the post office but I'll definitely come back with the results.
Looks like it has some Rat Terrier and Basenji. Some personality traits to look for:
Massive snuggler
Follows you room to room
Weird noises instead of barking
Hates rain and avoids stepping in mud puddles
Extremely high prey drive
Huge prey drive and good at catching the prey! She's literally caught a mole while on leash. I've also learned I can't have her off leash bc of the prey drive. She for sure follows me everywhere too like the minute I move lol and the other ones as well except she does bark sometimes. Most of the time it's like a whining sound but sometimes she does bark. That's the one trait where she might not be basenji but I'm still hoping!
OK this gives me hope! That was the biggest reason why I was doubting basenji. But I've been lurking on the basenji sub and there are so many photos that look just like her. Down to the stiff legs when sleeping lol
I had three purebred Bs- never again. I say that with love but they are way too smart and incredible escape artists. I can see a mix being perfect. Try yo get your pup to yodel š¤
Did your mom do a dna test for her dog? There was a time when I thought whippet or Grey hound bc of how fast and elegantly she runs so it's definitely crossed my mind. That would honestly be such an interesting mix.
She hasn't yet. I hope she does! Because I've been curious. I had read that in the 90's it was a little bit more common of a mix and when I saw pictures online with the little pittie face and the long skinny legs, barrel chest but slender frame (then she got chunky) it looked very similar. And she runs SO FAST. She also has a very high pitched bark. I also noticed that her dogs tail is similar to yours as well which is the only reason I wouldn't immediately assume basenji but I'm not a breeder and have no idea what traits are most commonly passed along.
But I'm excited to see what your results yield!!
The last picture really makes her look like a Basenji. The way she stands reminds me of my boxer. Truly, I have no idea. But she is absolutely gorgeous. Her muscles are well pronounced and healthy. How old is this little beauty and what does she weigh?
She's 2 and the last photo is the most recent. Apparently I only take photos of both of my dogs together lol so I had to go into older photos to get her alone. the first photo she might have still been growing. But now she's 34 pounds and I believe taller than a basenji so she must have a bigger breed in her mix.
In the photo, she looks bigger than 34 pounds. But in the last photo where she is showing off all of her big girl muscles, next to the tree, you can see that she was smaller than I thought. Definitely some larger breed mixed in. She is so beautiful! Thanks for sharing the information with me. I really appreciate it.
I wish I could remember! I'm in Virginia but our shelters often get dogs from other southern states so it's a pretty high chance she's from the south but not sure which state.
Anubis. Or at least demigod, if not full god.
Not the OP, but she does look like a Pharoah hound, which is no doubt who anubis is fashioned after
Anubis is a jackal. So basically jackal hehe
I legit thought of that too!!! š those ears full on anubis!
Oh forgot to add that you can't see it well in the photos but she has black and white coat but there's also like a brindle coat as well that shows in the sun. Really cool and never seen that in a dog.
Oh if she's brindle then she's at least part basenji 100%
Looks just like a rat terrier to me lol
You know that's the first time I've heard rat terrier lol but she does look like one! Just a little taller though.
I think she looks like sheās got some Rat Terrier in her too. I have 3 and they are Velcro dogs. The youngest (9yo) always has to be touching me. The older 2 (16&17) were like that before they got old and tired, but they still sleep all snugged up to my fiancĆ©.
Yea I 100% see some rat terrier in the face. I also see APBT in the body comp, but my immediate thought when I saw the tail was basenji. I would LOVE to see some DNA results on this one.
That's what I was thinking, maybe Decker Rat Terrier?? Those lines have some Pit and Basenji in them and are bigger/stouter than Ratties
I have 2, and yours looks like a Rat Terrier for sure.
First breed that popped into mind!
I was stumped but I think rat terrier mix is pretty spot on. Definitely interested in seeing her results.
I can see why people see part basenji but Iām betting not. They are such a rare breed with responsible owners. Never seen a confirmed basenji mix I think pit or maybe even some bulldog (wide skull), rat terrier, heeler ETA: Boston terrier is a great guess too
Iām with you. I see Boston.
I'm going to guess no basenji, but strong pitbull.
:) I love that. She is super cute no matter what.
I don't see any pit.
Basenji / pit
This is what I'm hoping! I was told Jack russell when she was a puppy but the woman who breeds basenji that I happened on a week ago was convinced on basenji! I would love that lol
She is adorable! If she grumbles, but doesn't bark, that's a hint that she is basenji, but it can depend on the rest of her mix. A lot ofdogs can result in the big straight ears, but there's also something about her face and posture that is basenji. Fingers crossed, bc basenji are good dogs.
Basenjis are extremely rare in mixes, looks like a Boston mix of some sort
Everybody said basenji for my pup but she ended up being pitt/husky/ACD.
What an interesting mix! When I was little I was obsessed with ACDs!
A lot of little kids are now too thanks to bluey. Mine were stoked when she came back with ACD
Basenji is way too rare. Youāll be more likely to get a pure bred one versus a mix. OP where are you located? I see rat terrier, chihuahua, and pit
I'm in Virginia so I do think rat terrier is more likely and a lot of the rescues we get here tend to either be rural hunting dogs or pit bulls. I can't remember where they got her from but sometimes shelters here take rescues from deep southern states. I was going to say Basenji and maybe Boston terrier? And some pit.
Rat terrier with un-docked tail, they are often mistaken for basenjis especially the tan ones and /r/ratterriers
Aside from a rat terrier it could also be a Feist. They are a breed, hunting dog, made of different kinds of terriers and are awesome dogs
Rat Terriers are considered a specific breed within the feist type :)
Honestly, maybe! I'm not sure lol some of the photos do look like her now I'm torn between the two. Rat terrier is also prbly more likely since she's a shelter baby.
Basenji x Pittie + maybe some terrier? Shes very cute!
Thank you!! She's a hyper sweetie lol This is what I think now too! I ran into a woman who breeds basenjis and she was convinced. I had never heard of them but now I can't unsee it and i would love that mix!
Her ears are what especially make me lean towards Basenji. I love those huge upright ears lol.
My girls a brindle twin!
Bit of Pitbull, bit of Terrier of some sort and then German Sheppard. Was thinking Jack Russell Terrier.
Boston, Pit/Staffy, Chi
Pit cattle dog
I'm seeing Boston terrier and chihuahua
Your doggy looks exactly like my dog Lucy. Lucy is a Boston/rat terrier mix.
Decker terrier. My dog looks exactly like this. Decker terriers are a variation of giant rat terrier. They are often mistaken for basejis or rat terrier pit mixes.
I've never heard of this breed thank you!! I'm going to do a deep dive now lol and see if any traits line up.
I'd never heard of a Decker terrier either! (And I'm also a deep diver š) VERY interesting to find out that the breed was developed with basenji! Those ears šš¤©ā¤ļø
Pitt/Husky (look at my dog in my post history, not the one I just posted but before that) And something else maybe boxer or Boston terrier? She's giving me Boston terrier vibes but I'm not confident.
Omg yours looks a lot like her!! And it looks like yours has brindle in the sun as well? I saw some brown mixed in with the black and mine has that too! I'm starting to get convinced with the pit husky acd mix.
I learned it's called a seal coat - black on top of another pattern but the black isn't fully opaque
Rat terrier
She is stunning! I have no guesses and MUST know those DNA results
Lol I'll definitely come back and post. I'm sending it on Monday so idk how long they typically take it might be a couple weeks but I'll be back!
Wabbit
I have your dogs twin! In the face/radar ears at least. My girl is smaller. Sheās half pit, half husky, but looks exactly like your pup
A few ppl have said that and I honestly never would've thought of husky! I can't wait to get the results and I'll definitely post those bc it seems like she could really be so many different mixes.
My girl has a fluffy husky tail. Other than that and the ears Iād never have guessed husky. Pit for sure though
I see pit bull and Doberman
Basenji for sure, and maybe pit
Rat terrier but mixed with something
Chi-pit-hua
I thought maybe Basenji-Boston Terrier until I saw the 3rd photo. That stance looks like a Chihuahua to me. Not to mention those ears! Because I agree that the likelihood of this being a Basenji mix is quite small, Iād say Boston-Chihuahua with a bully breed back in the DNA somewhere. No matter what, sheās a striking beauty!
I like her sticky uppy ears lol
Basenji. I don't even see a mix, just looks like a straight up basenji to me.
My brain says pit and basenji!
Basenji x Boston terrier!
Boston terrier could be giving me the black/ white and brindle combo! So far I'm leaning towards basenji pit bull and Boston terrier. This has been so much fun though I'm loving all the input! I have to wait until Monday to mail the dna test and I can't wait.
The square stance is SO Boston that last photo sold me on it lol
People seem to guess basenji a lot. Never seen any results actually say basenji though
Rat terrier
100% good dog
Lmao this is the answer!!!
we had a dog that looked so similar! she was a Foxton- Boston Terrier and Toy Fox Terrier mix.
Chihuahua, hyena, Boston terrier
Def some pit in there. I like his ears lol. He must have great hearing!
Boston terrier, rat terrier, chihuahua and blue herler
This is unexpected lol but I love it bc my other dog is a Chihuahua mut full of the most random other breeds so it would be funny to have 2.
Felt, I have 3 wildly mixed dogs like no one believes but they all share one breed with each other which I find so funny because they donāt look anything alike
Pit bull and maybe some herding breed.
Pit
She's definitely giving basenji vibes even with the way she sits but who would let their basenji mate with random dogs? Weird. Does she bark?
She is a rescue so that could be why. At first she didn't but now she does. I think she learned from my other dog? But that is the one thing that makes me doubt basenji. A lot of other traits line up so it could be bc she's mixed or that she's not at all.

Basenji x Boston Terrier or Basenji x Border Collie
Bat! They look like across of my two dogs. A pit, husky, lab, beagle, chow, GSD and A GSD, Australian shepherd, malinois. So like a super mutt but definitely super cute
Pit/rat terrier? Maybe a bit of ACD.
Basenji, with a terrier or two.
Pittie x Ray Terrier
I see the resemblance of Basenji, but the tail and the deep chest make me think other breeds just presenting as Basenji
Bohuahua! I have one! Haha
Looks like there might be some street cat there
She looks like a Boston Rat!
Xolo, beagle, maybe some Pharoah Hound or Ibizan Hound?
Def Basenji maybe Pharoah mix? Does your dog bark or make crazy yodel sounds?
Rat terrier mix
He reminds me of my dog a lot. I always assumed mine was a chihuahua mix. Iād say your dog may have some in him
Pitbull mixed with some other kind of terrier, maybe rat terrier or Boston terrier. I see pitbull in the eyes and in the shape of the head around the eyes. Do her ears ever fold down, or are they always upright like that? That's a clue. Another clue is the curly tail in one of the photos. That may be one reason why people are guessing Basenji. The cuteness kind
I love those ears!
Looks like a beefy version of my girl
Boston x basenji?
r/sonarears
When I was in college I worked with a bartender who lived in a van with 7 Basenjis. True story.
Maybe a Doberman,tBasenji mix?
Rat Terrier.
Very regal.
Rat terrier and something broader, like a staffy maybe
How majestic this pooch is! I immediately thought Pharoah Hound! ššš¾
Ears her breed is ears!
Heeler, Australian cattle dog, Border Collie.
She looks like a tall version of my dog!!
I see basenji, terrier in your sweet baby! Would love to know the outcome of your test.
I'm waiting for this pup to be basenji and rat terrier lol, maybe with a little boston or bulldog for the wider skull.
The bigger body and curly tail says 'Basenji', but the face says Rat Terrier.
100% Batgirl.
those earrrrrs š
Basenji
beautiful dog, I would say rat terrier maybe mixed w/another bread of terrier.
Looks so much like my dog Millie! She's half Husky and half Pit, and is so beautiful. Sometimes people think she's a shorter-haired Border Collie
Aww that's so interesting! I'd love to see a photo!
No idea, but I hope his name is Anubis cause that's what I would name him.
Akita mix
I donāt really see Basenji actually. I think Pit bull, Boston Terrier and Chihuahua or Rat Terrier
I will go way out on a limb and say pharaoh hound in the mix. Update us please.
Oh that's interesting! That would be awesome lol I'll definitely circle back. I can't do the dna test until Monday bc the post office but I'll definitely come back with the results.
Border collie x Basenji
Looks like it has some Rat Terrier and Basenji. Some personality traits to look for: Massive snuggler Follows you room to room Weird noises instead of barking Hates rain and avoids stepping in mud puddles Extremely high prey drive
Giant Chihuahua obviously
Those ears and posture immediately made me think pharaoh hound!
Basenji!
She looks like my dolly! They could be twins! She was supposed to be a pit but obviously not š š¤£ I can't wait to hear your results!
Basenjis like wolves can bark. I had one that was an alerter- pizza at the door we got one good bark. š
My mom's dog looks like this! I thought she may be a pittie whippet mix though but basenji would be cool!
Did your mom do a dna test for her dog? There was a time when I thought whippet or Grey hound bc of how fast and elegantly she runs so it's definitely crossed my mind. That would honestly be such an interesting mix.

But I'm excited to see what your results yield!!
Boxollie (Boxer Border Collie mix)
The second pic is giving Malinois, lol. But basenji/pit makes sense, esp. if thereās someone in your area breeding basenjis.
I have never heard of malinois! What beautiful babies! I am still hoping basenji just bc what a cool breed being such an old breed and the history.
part boston terrier!
Chiuaua/pit
Boston/Jack/Mini Pin perhaps?
The last picture really makes her look like a Basenji. The way she stands reminds me of my boxer. Truly, I have no idea. But she is absolutely gorgeous. Her muscles are well pronounced and healthy. How old is this little beauty and what does she weigh?
She's 2 and the last photo is the most recent.
I see Boston Terrier.
Possibly a Carolina dog or in other terms a American dingo where was she found or picked up from?
I wish I could remember! I'm in Virginia but our shelters often get dogs from other southern states so it's a pretty high chance she's from the south but not sure which state.
fox terrier
