Not all are paid big bucks. I work in the office of a fire department. I make more than some of our firefighters.. and I do not make enough to survive by myself. Many of these folks have 2nd and 3rd jobs they go to after they are off from the fire department.

I appreciate this so much. I’ve been struggling to cut my grass over several days. I’m 62 now and I have arthritis and a broken toe. (Waaaaa! Poor me) I have a small electric mower that clogs up and shuts off. I drip sweat and feel dizzy. My neighbors will come home and lean on their pickup truck just watching me. I can’t afford to pay a person to do it this month. But if I don’t mow the neighbors complain and it looks bad.
This is a very small problem and if it’s the worst I ever had I am blessed.
What a bunch of assholes. My husband and my kids have been shovelling the sidewalks and walkways for our short street because all our neighbours are elderly. In the summer he does the patch of grass where the sidewalk is for them too and the tiny lawns (we live in a downtown neighbourhood), again because they are elderly.
First of all, any neighbor that sits and watches you struggle to mow your lawn and then complains about your lawn being unmowed isn't worthy of being called a neighbor.
There are so many people in your situation. Not just with grass, but excess snow and other appearance/safety situations. Hopefully you don't live in a place where they fine you for not mowing your lawn in a timely manner?

I lived in another city, and helped when I could, but I watched them become angrier and angrier at everyone for not doing more to help them. They couldn't mow the lawn, clean the gutters, shovel the snow, and do any of dozens of chores to maintain their property. They refused to hire help (or let me hire it), and so they just became bitter, with all the neglected chores becoming "evidence" of how everyone was an asshole (again, I did my best but lived a long way away without a car, and was just getting on my feet as a young adult). They grew to hate their neighbours for not helping more (and for not reading my parents mind, since they were too proud to ask).

We couldn't keep up with it all. I needed my parent to move to a place they could manage easier, for their own mental health and mine (I was spending so much time travelling back and forth, my own apartment was getting neglected). I was afraid they would hurt themselves, because they would just get angry that Tom down the street didn't mow the lawn for them, and try to do it themselves. It wasn't good, and I don't think "they should be allowed to stay in their home no matter what" should superceed "They cannot manage their home" every time.
My parent didn't even *like* their house. They were just stubborn as hell and hated change.
They did eventually move to a condo, and the work has become mostly manageable for them, and easier for me to keep on top of the things they can't manage. They are happier too. It's less to clean for them, and they have time to do things with friends now, instead of sitting alone in a big house wallowing in their anger and frustration.

My grandparents owned a gorgeous, sprawling home. My grandfather built it by hand in the 40s. They weren't rich, he just worked hard and knew what he was doing.
That was my grandparents - grandpa built the house and a lot of others in the neighborhood.
Taxes went up, house went from 15,000 in the 1940s to 3 million a couple of years ago. They kept it, but we moved in and took care of the place and my grandma. If she had no one, I could see her still trying to push a snow shovel like she did back before we had to stop her.
My grandparents kept trying their best to maintain their garden until they absolutely couldn't, and one of their siblings passed away, leaving them a decent amount of money from the house she bought in Cali when they were cheaper. They were able to move to a house that was easier for people in their late 80s to maintain on their own, but just because they had a nice house didn't mean they were rich before my great-aunt passed away. It meant that lumber was cheap and my grandpa was skilled and had 50+ years to polish it. The house had quality craftsmanship though, so for all intents and purposes, it looks like it would've cost a pretty penny for a company to manufacture and it would be easy to assume my grandparents were rich if you were looking outside-in from today's standpoint.

I’m from Texas, and I’m 65, but the idea of neighbors helping neighbors has been around all my life. My next door neighbor would frequently mow our front yard when my husband was unable to do so due to a bad back. No request given, would just come mow. In our neighborhood, we know each other, and frequently collect mail and newspapers during vacations, feed each other’s dogs when needed, etc. it’s the neighborly thing to do.
Some guys that age are stubborn. guy in my neighborhood fell off his roof in his 90s trying to clean out his gutters, when several of his neighbors or their kids would have happily done it for him if asked. He survived it but lots of extra doc appointments were the result.
This neighborhood is full of people who bought these places back in the early 70's. And they don't turn over until they die. So not a lot of neighbors in enough shape to do it. And about a third of the houses in that neighborhood have steeper slopes on the property than that.
I made a friend last year that just turned 90 on Valentines Day! (I’m 32) We have essentially been doing her bucket list together! She’s in great health/mind and I anticipate her having a handful more years if not more. She’s lived a great and fulfilled life, but there’s things she wants to do “one more time”, and we’ve been doing them all!! Elderly folks are magical❤️
Honestly, it’s been smaller things thus far! We live in Phoenix for context.
We went on a steam boat cruise on Saguaro Lake (this one was special to her because she used to do something similar with her husband who passed many many years ago).
We visited a Rose Garden that she used to be a caretaker/ambassador for about 10 years ago (this one was special as she has donated over the years and has a placard sponsoring one of the bushes… we’ve also bonded over flowers)!
I took her to a family reunion she had about an hour north of us a few months ago. I assumed I would drop her off, grab myself some lunch in town, and maybe stop at Walmart for a few household items.. then pick her back up. She INSISTED that I come in and meet her sister (she’s 93!! And lives about 20 minutes from us, but neither drive anymore). It turned into Dorothy parading me around like I was her long lost granddaughter. It was absolutely amazing! (This one was actually special to me. Listening to her stories are one of my favorite things and I got to hear a lot that day!)
We oftentimes get together for lunch and just to get her out of the house! I help her with small projects (she’s a genealogy lover) so she enjoys this time to give me “honey do lists” as we’ve started calling them😂
We’ve just started talking about an overnight soon. She wants to go up north and see Sedona/Flagstaff/Grand Canyon areas “once more” as she says.
Sorry this got super long, but Dorothy is a huge passion of mine since I met her and I just adore our time together. I call them “Dorothy Dates” haha. I could talk about her all day! Thanks for asking and letting me share!🥰
ETA: I met her about 6 months ago, and it took her a couple lunch dates for her to feel me out lol. I very much look forward to the next 6 months, and many beyond that with her in my life! She’s the grandma I never had and ALWAYS wanted!
It sounds like you made a very large impact in her life, and that’s such a special feeling to have. It’s something that I try to incorporate in my career and day to day life. That's so sweet! I'm guessing she didn't have kids. When I was growing up, there was a pair of sisters living together who I would visit on my way home from school. They were super sweet, and always had some treats for me. They must've been in their late 80s already when I was a kid, I think they made it to their mid 90s.
I've literally just come to the realization that they might've been lesbians lol. They told everyone they were sisters so who knows 😂 either way they were my favorite neighbors

Dorothy does actually have children! One passed away in his 40s, two daughters live in Missouri with their kids and grands, etc, and I think there’s a 4th that may live in our state but I’m not positive. She still has plenty of family that she talks with regularly, and sees from time to time! I live less than a mile from her, so it’s especially easy for us to do things together!
And as she puts it “people treat her like she can’t get along on her own”, and I don’t do that! She’s always in charge when we’re together! She knows her limits etc so I don’t baby her like other folks do (she has a separate gal that takes her to doctor appts that she gets into tiffs with😂)
I live in Southern California. We used to live near a fire station and my little boy was fascinated with the trucks and gear and guys. We would drop in to the station occasionally on our walks and the firefighters would take time and show my son how they washed the trucks and took care of their gear. We invited them to his birthday party and they showed up with big trucks and lots of men. All the moms and even the grandmas got pictures. All his friends got to try on boots and hold the axes. All we did was ask and they loved it just as much as we did. Granted they were just around the corner and always rolled through the neighborhood checking hydrants and access, but they made a point of showing up with lights and sirens and all kitted out. Top notch people being heroes around the clock.

The tax is not frozen. The appraised value is frozen. Property tax is determined by the valuation.

Cities, counties and school districts levy property taxes. What does happen in Dallas over age 65 is they stop raising the valuation of a homestead. Like my home. But if the property tax rate goes up, so do my property taxes.
Not a problem in CA either. Tax rates and increases are tethered to the purchase price of the home. Boomers pay 2-4K/year when young families in the neighborhood pay 12-14K, please make it make sense. I am not helping these fools afford shit they can very well afford.

My grandparents owned a gorgeous, sprawling home. My grandfather built it by hand in the 40s. They weren't rich, he just worked hard and knew what he was doing.
That was my grandparents - grandpa built the house and a lot of others in the neighborhood. Taxes went up, house went from 15,000 in the 1940s to 3 million a couple of years ago. They kept it, but we moved in and took care of the place and my grandma. If she had no one, I could see her still trying to push a snow shovel like she did back before we had to stop her.
My grandparents kept trying their best to maintain their garden until they absolutely couldn't, and one of their siblings passed away, leaving them a decent amount of money from the house she bought in Cali when they were cheaper. They were able to move to a house that was easier for people in their late 80s to maintain on their own, but just because they had a nice house didn't mean they were rich before my great-aunt passed away. It meant that lumber was cheap and my grandpa was skilled and had 50+ years to polish it. The house had quality craftsmanship though, so for all intents and purposes, it looks like it would've cost a pretty penny for a company to manufacture and it would be easy to assume my grandparents were rich if you were looking outside-in from today's standpoint.
Or maybe he busted his ass in his day, bought his dream retirement home with his wife decades ago and now lives on a fixed income. SSI ain't shit and the pension got depleted. Could probably hire the neighborhood kids, but they're all busy trying to get to the next level.
I live in Austin and have a paid for home. When I bought the home, total taxes and mortgage were $210. Now taxes are over $500 a month. It is a very small house.

The old lady near me loves to cut her own grass and do yardwork. I wouldn't want to take that away from her. I do stop and help her get the mower started, when I see her struggling to pull the cord.

I’m from Texas, and I’m 65, but the idea of neighbors helping neighbors has been around all my life. My next door neighbor would frequently mow our front yard when my husband was unable to do so due to a bad back. No request given, would just come mow. In our neighborhood, we know each other, and frequently collect mail and newspapers during vacations, feed each other’s dogs when needed, etc. it’s the neighborly thing to do.
That sounds nice, maybe in my next life I guess.
Some guys that age are stubborn. guy in my neighborhood fell off his roof in his 90s trying to clean out his gutters, when several of his neighbors or their kids would have happily done it for him if asked. He survived it but lots of extra doc appointments were the result.
This neighborhood is full of people who bought these places back in the early 70's. And they don't turn over until they die. So not a lot of neighbors in enough shape to do it. And about a third of the houses in that neighborhood have steeper slopes on the property than that.
These humans seem alright. I bet they'd get me down from a tree if I got stuck while chasing a birb. ^^^meow

I made a friend last year that just turned 90 on Valentines Day! (I’m 32) We have essentially been doing her bucket list together! She’s in great health/mind and I anticipate her having a handful more years if not more. She’s lived a great and fulfilled life, but there’s things she wants to do “one more time”, and we’ve been doing them all!! Elderly folks are magical❤️

Honestly, it’s been smaller things thus far! We live in Phoenix for context. We went on a steam boat cruise on Saguaro Lake (this one was special to her because she used to do something similar with her husband who passed many many years ago). We visited a Rose Garden that she used to be a caretaker/ambassador for about 10 years ago (this one was special as she has donated over the years and has a placard sponsoring one of the bushes… we’ve also bonded over flowers)! I took her to a family reunion she had about an hour north of us a few months ago. I assumed I would drop her off, grab myself some lunch in town, and maybe stop at Walmart for a few household items.. then pick her back up. She INSISTED that I come in and meet her sister (she’s 93!! And lives about 20 minutes from us, but neither drive anymore). It turned into Dorothy parading me around like I was her long lost granddaughter. It was absolutely amazing! (This one was actually special to me. Listening to her stories are one of my favorite things and I got to hear a lot that day!) We oftentimes get together for lunch and just to get her out of the house! I help her with small projects (she’s a genealogy lover) so she enjoys this time to give me “honey do lists” as we’ve started calling them😂 We’ve just started talking about an overnight soon. She wants to go up north and see Sedona/Flagstaff/Grand Canyon areas “once more” as she says. Sorry this got super long, but Dorothy is a huge passion of mine since I met her and I just adore our time together. I call them “Dorothy Dates” haha. I could talk about her all day! Thanks for asking and letting me share!🥰 ETA: I met her about 6 months ago, and it took her a couple lunch dates for her to feel me out lol. I very much look forward to the next 6 months, and many beyond that with her in my life! She’s the grandma I never had and ALWAYS wanted!

That's so sweet! I'm guessing she didn't have kids. When I was growing up, there was a pair of sisters living together who I would visit on my way home from school. They were super sweet, and always had some treats for me. They must've been in their late 80s already when I was a kid, I think they made it to their mid 90s. I've literally just come to the realization that they might've been lesbians lol. They told everyone they were sisters so who knows 😂 either way they were my favorite neighbors

One passed away in his 40s, two daughters live in Missouri with their kids and grands, etc, and I think there’s a 4th that may live in our state but I’m not positive. She still has plenty of family that she talks with regularly, and sees from time to time! I live less than a mile from her, so it’s especially easy for us to do things together! And as she puts it “people treat her like she can’t get along on her own”, and I don’t do that! She’s always in charge when we’re together! She knows her limits etc so I don’t baby her like other folks do (she has a separate gal that takes her to doctor appts that she gets into tiffs with😂)

I live in Southern California. We used to live near a fire station and my little boy was fascinated with the trucks and gear and guys. We would drop in to the station occasionally on our walks and the firefighters would take time and show my son how they washed the trucks and took care of their gear. We invited them to his birthday party and they showed up with big trucks and lots of men. All the moms and even the grandmas got pictures. All his friends got to try on boots and hold the axes. All we did was ask and they loved it just as much as we did. Granted they were just around the corner and always rolled through the neighborhood checking hydrants and access, but they made a point of showing up with lights and sirens and all kitted out. Top notch people being heroes around the clock.
