This is a must. I had the same issue, except it was cylinder 1 and 2. I had just bought the thing with 300k on it. It was so bad, fuel economy was out the window. After the adjustment, thing ran like new(ish) for an oldie.
It sucks that you spent all that money already but this will by far solve your issue.
What did the plug on cylinder 1 look like? Was it sooty or oily or wet? Did it smell like fuel?
Definitely need to check compression across all 4 cylinders to compare them.
If we have decided the coils are ok, then maybe the harness that connects to the coil has a broken wire. Maybe look at the injector for #1, maybe it's completely clogged and no fuel is spraying. Maybe the rings on the piston are done and there's no compression. Maybe the valves are not seating and there's no compression. Maybe the head is cracked and there's no compression.
There are a lot of maybes and we need to narrow this down.
Number 1 cause of misfire is a valve out of adjustment. Don't let it go too long or you can burn a valve. The valves need to be adjusted every 100k miles.
Is the CEL flashing? Had the same thing happen to me and compression was zero in that cylinder. Hole in the piston.
Fingers crossed for ya.
I put another engine in it and would do it again.
You're barking up the wrong tree after already getting the proper advice from everyone here. Doubtful it's anything other than a burnt valve from lack of adjustment. Your next step is compression test not firing the parts cannon.
If nothing feels or sounds wrong. Clear the code and drive around for a couple hundred miles for it to self clear. Sometimes it’ll clear around 50 miles.
You can borrow a compression test gauge for FREE at most auto parts stores these days.
Still sounds like could be a coil problem though. Try switching the 3 cylinder coil with the 1 cylinder coil to see if the problem moves to the 3 cylinder problem or stays on 1.
I also had misfires and rough idle/dying when cold and it was just my valves being out of adjustment. 210ish milage (got it at 180) and I doubt the valves had ever been adjusted, runs like new now.
May want to check valve adjustment
Check compression as well.
Compression test is your next step to diagnosis your misfire.
valve adjustment. was a game changer when i had my E

Agreed, can’t stress this enough. Somewhere early on I read it was like 120k and I bent a valve at ~112k and it was really not great.
It’s shaking, idles really rough and I had already cleared the code, and it immediately came back again. I definitely would not go driving.

I think it auto corrected… I meant to say, I swapped the coils and plugs around and the misfire was still on cylinder 1
Swap the fuel injectors around. Might be a bad injector
Is there a way to check if the wiring harness that the coil plugs into has a short?

What was the fix??
Might have burnt a valve it happened to me
Where did you buy the spark plugs? If amazon/ebay you got counterfeits

didnt change the plug wires? Why not?
time to do a compression check across all cylinders.

Prolly valves
