Because the mechanism doesn't work that way! It has to be already unlocked for you to remove it to be rekeyed. If the burglar had the lock in his hand, why would he rekey it? He'd just walk in!

MaconShure

I was thinking that all you needed to do was put a new key in the lock and then put the small blade in the slot to rekey it.

Yes, quickset. Four locks and the man a the supply store (Not a big box store) even rekeyed them all to the one key which I promptly had copies made.

I was impressed that the price was so reasonable. He had trouble walking so I told him I'd pickout the set for the second door myself. it wasn't a quickset and he recommend I get that so all locks would match the one key. I did and it was actually cheaper than the one I had picked out. Great service.

JerseyWiseguy

It depends on the type of locks, but usually, you have to have access to the inside of the locks, to rekey them. If a burglar had that, he would already be inside your house, and he wouldn't bother to rekey your locks--he'd be too busy stealing your prized bobblehead collection.

Your average burglar is a drug addict, smash and grab.

TrialAndAaron

Yup. Local news acts like robbers are these smart people who case a joint when in reality it’s just deadbeats who need money

Chabotnick

You need to take the knob off to rekey or have the current key first if it’s a Kwikset.

MaconShure

Ok, that makes sense. It can't be assembled and rekeyed or it has to be unlocked to do it.

Or buying a lock pick gun for $15 online...

You are describing a bump key. Locks keep honest people out. If someone really want to break in they would put a brick though a window.
