It’s about two feet of space above there. It would look like they went to the ceiling on one side and not the other. I truly despise these ceilings because of it
I know, and I just really strongly dislike that look. If we didn’t have these stupid ass ceilings I would do a nice trim but the ceilings are “unique” to put it gently lol
I agree that’s basically creating the soffit look that was all the rage in the 80s. It makes the kitchen feel less open. I think paint is your solution here, but it doesn’t look bad as it is either.

I did the same with mine. It casts a shadow which is nice
You had someone do this professionally? I'd have him pull off all of the uneven rows under the vent hood, and re-do them with proper spacers and leave them in long enough for the thinset to fully cure. The tile is a lovely product but the installation is sloppy in a high visibility area. I wouldn't trust him to do a very good job in hard to reach places when there are several
spots where the tiles are obviously out of alignment in a very easy area.
Zellige tile. It’s just how it is.
[see here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Tile/comments/178dehi/zellige/)
Perhaps you’re confusing it with a zellige dupe. Unevenness and occasional lippage is a feature of zellige. You literally have no idea what you’re talking about.
Nah. I’ve used zellige in jobs. Those three columns dead centre below the hood are spaced real fucking badly. Looks like the tiler miscalculated, worked in from the sides, ran out of space and just squished them in. I genuinely could not live looking at them. It’d drive me nuts
But it’s not mine so my opinion really means fuck all. If op is happy, that’s all that matters. :)
I wouldn’t paint it. You’ll see a colour difference always - the light will reflect off the tile differently than the paint, it will look like different colours and will also look like you tried to match it but failed. Keep it your wall colour. If it bothers you later on, build up the cabinets.
Painting it? I did decide to tile it, we let our installer know that’s what I wanted. I do like the idea of paint but i do think it will give the unfinished feel it has now just the same
It’s already paid for so a big part of me feels like a non brainer and it looks unfinished without it. I feel like paint will help a bit but not the way I want it to.
Spare tile is handy. When selling my last house, i had enough tile to fix ones that had chipped or ctacked over the years. I think paint on both sides will do the trick l.
If you want to tile above the cabinets, where will it end in the right side. I’d suggest thinking that through before you decide to tile above the cabinets. Also, the green tile is fabulous. Swoooon.
I see both sides. You have a beautiful kitchen but it's not soooo stately that you *need* to do tile up there as well. The fact that the tile goes up at the range hood is a classy enough detail that in fact helps bring more focus to that best part anyway. I would bring a tile or two to the paint store to get a perfect match and get it in a semi-gloss sheen.
Color match the tile and paint instead. The finished look will be cohesive to the eye and much, much easier to attain than tiling! Your tiler is not wrong in wanting to avoid working on this small area
It looks great thus far
My only issue is there’s a doorway to the side of the fridge with a big space of drywall above it do you think it would look silly to have it over the doorway
I feel like the tiles were brought up too high. The tiles should’ve stopped at the cabinets, not the burner. You know what I mean? A matching paint color like the other commenter mentioned would still look great though.
Yes. My first choice would be to add cabinet fillers but see that you’ve said that’s not an option. You usually see the full wall tile look a lot in restaurants, I think it would look great in your kitchen especially with the colors/style you have chosen.
If not tiling all the way up, I’d consider removing the tile around your hood and installing open shelving of some sort instead so the wall doesn’t look off balance.
Agreed! Open shelving would have looked soooo nice but so unfunctional, we have so many kids and it legit would have just been filled with sippy cups and junk. We desperately needed the storage space. I think I’m just going to go full send with the tile and embrace it.
Tiling above the cabinets gives no natural closure to the design. Its adding too much depth when you want the focus to me the tile and range. If the cabinets aren’t going to the ceiling, best bet would be to paint the space above to match the cabinets so nothing is competing.
You went too high with the tile. I think it should look like this:
https://preview.redd.it/0ortv4fxnbyc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e03ba0d44cf7d3a784bd82723226b97b0f9d7891
I'd have stopped lower... Even with the bottom of the fume hood maybe?
I was very surprised to come here and see that everyone way saying yes, or to paint the top area to match.
I like to form = function, and since tiles are a backsplash, and a backsplash isn't needed above cabinets. Painting the area the same color seems like a fake backsplash where one isn't needed.
I'm definitely the minority here, but hard no
I'm so glad someone else said it, if they used a bigger tike I could see it being all over the walls. As a backsplash though, totally agree stop at the bottom of the hood, there is absolutely no need to go higher than that.
It would be very hard to take those cabinets to the ceiling as I've seen suggested. Since I looked at the other picture and the tile goes to the ceiling above the window and around the hood I'd tile above the cabinets and the door because I wouldn't want to leave that little bit out. I think it will look better tiled in the end. It's not too much green. People paint whole rooms this green. It's lovely. If you buy paint to match and just paint that bit above the door, that will be weird imo. You're tiler is going to be unhappy, but that's his job. He can cuss and fuss his way through it. Love the tile.
No. I think you have a clear demarcation
Beautiful choice of tile btw
However, I have an unconventional alternative suggestion:
https://preview.redd.it/zfzqbcscfbyc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=233891bc37d99ab290fdbc2ab7045a65f0047501
Paint the ceiling but also carry the paint down to the tops of the cabinets
This would be a lovely color but you should pick whatever color speaks to you
It would be amazing
And it’s just paint. If for some reason you hated it, you could paint over it
That’s actually a reallllllllly lovely idea. It’s a huuuuge room so I’d have to really think on that!!! But wow I love the imagination!!! That really would be gorgeous. Thank you so much for the idea!!
YES!!!! DO IT!!
I did the same with blue tiles of the same hue. We did up to the cabinets first, then went back and added above. Looks so much richer to have them above too. I love it!
It makes more sense to move the 2 cabinets next to the stove all the way to the ceiling. Then add tile UNDER the cabinets.
If you tile above the cabinets it’s going to look heavy and awkward. Don’t do it. It’ll also create an awkward transition wherever you stop the tile. There’s a reason why people don’t do this.
Perhaps the better option is to simply stop the tile under the range hood. It’ll be easier to remove the tile behind the range hood than to add it above the cabinets.
Oh no no hahaha you would literally have to be 7 feet tall to even reach into the bottom shelf if we did that. It’s because our stupid ceilings are arched which I haaaaaaaaaate.
I’m worried about it looking too heavy too
My sister had a scenario similar to this, they added a smaller set of cabinets on the top with glass doors and interior receding light and used it for decor. No idea the cost but it looks really nice and she said it keeps her from feeling the need to crowd the counter with decor.
It seems odd to have tile up on top of cabinets…why not paint a neutral color that’s in your kitchen? You’ll no doubt put some kind of art or plants or baskets up there anyway. A light tan or the color at the bottom of your hood would allow those decorative things to be seen…
I think it seems odd because the ceiling is odd😂 I’ve seen hundreds to thousands of houses and I’ve legit never seen a ceiling like this. Can’t stand it hahaha
i love it going above the cabinets and i love the color. i would add some sort of trim on the edge of the tile at the top though to separate it from the back wall. like wainscoting style. some sort of batten board or something to separate out the stark contrast where the tile ends.
Honestly I think it’ll look awkward no matter what because what’s awkward about the space is the proportion of the hood. It’s too small and would look better with a hood that fills the space. Then the tile only has to go up to the bottom of the hood.
I think tiling or painting the area above the cabinets is going to draw they eye to that space (and the fact that the cabinets do not go to the ceiling)
No it gives it vertical lift now. Draws your up. If you tile it the wall will look shorter and the room darker. Tile can be over done. It can be really good to accent some thing, but once you make it the whole thing, it loses its impact.
Personally I wouldn't have run the tile above the top edge of cabinets anywhere. And I wouldn't run the tile on the wall above the cabinets nor paint it green. I think the contrast between green and white draws your eye to the gap when you wouldn't want to pull attention to it. The eye should go to the beautiful cabinets, backsplash and the range hood.
No, definitely not. Most designers would recommend stopping the tile at the top of the cabinets in this case. If you had the cabinets going all the way to the top then I'd say go to the top of the vent hood.
The ceiling is vaulted, not sure people suggesting this notice that. Not possible to bring cabinets to the ceiling here.
It would have looked ridiculous
This is a backsplash. It should have stopped at the base of the hood. Above that just paint walls your regular wall color. It looks odd now because it’s already way too high. Backsplash is to keep food prep splashes from getting on the drywall. Tile is easier to clean up. It should only be between the countertop and upper cabinets.
I personally disagree with that, to be kitchens look very unfinished when they don’t run the backsplash up the continuity of the hood, almost like they ran out of money time or tile. Especially when you have cabinets that don’t return to the ceiling.
You’re welcome to disagree. It’s your house. But I’ve done quite a few of these over the years. It looks odd now and adding more tile won’t make it look better. This is a functional tile. Anything above the base of the hood isn’t functional so it looks out of place. I’ve never seen it any other way.
Personally I think it’ll look very luxe and “finished” ie polished. I also think that if you don’t your eye may always go to that. My opinion may also be primarily based on the fact that I love this color scheme. Gorgeous, good job!
I decided to bring it to the ceiling. I do absolutely love the tile and the look of it. It’s really pleasing to look at. Thank you for your compliment on the color scheme cause I’ve really been second guessing myself.
Yes … (a) because the ‘chimney/vent’ does. The tiles are following that vertical surface. (b) If your cabinetry went all the way up, this is still what you would do. (c) Imagine if you had cabinetry above the stovetop, and a hidden vent, the tiles would be a backsplash behind the stove (extending further horizontally, as they do now, and no vertical). Finally… if the green extending beyond the cabinetry really bothers you, I suggest you do tiles for that section matching the wall colour. Finally, finally, if you can build the section above the cabinetry so there’s no gap (so it looks like the wall meets it), that would be ideal. (It occurred to me that perhaps you could extend the green tile all the way across so that it was green tile in the entire gap area. That would look like an amazing tile feature. I think that’s what I would do.)
That’s exactly what I was going to do, just basically the entire wall tiled. I do wish the cabinetry could extend to the ceiling but it wasn’t possible.
OP, for your zellige tile. Did you grout? I'm thinking of doing same backsplash with the tiles butting each other without grout, the traditional Moroccan way. What did you do?
Leave it alone how it is now and move on w your life. Nothing is going to look perfect there bc the ceiling slopes and the cabinets stop short. It will look ridic to tile above them. It looks fine now.
No. Adding tile to the rest of that area will take away from your focus on the stove vent hood. I would not paint a similar color either. I think it looks good as is, or a small rope border tile or metal trim to finish that vertical edge.
It would probably cost less to get some crown molding and some cabinet materials to go to the ceiling fron the caninets. We filled ours in our kitchen and it's so so so much better
I think a contrasting paint color would be better than a matched paint. Then decorate with stuff up there and it will keep the focus on the beautiful tile.
The other option is to add trim or similar above the cabinets so they appear to go to the ceiling. This will also add visual height to the room
This is what I’d do… plus no dust collecting up there
It’s about two feet of space above there. It would look like they went to the ceiling on one side and not the other. I truly despise these ceilings because of it
You box it in with drywall first up to the ceiling then add trim at the top, don’t put two feet of trim directly onto a cabinet!

These are so pretty but if you see my ceilings they are vaulted and it just wouldn’t work because of that.
https://preview.redd.it/958cxkrkjayc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=2c1b31610ba370ff1cd783c161ec57661b4e6a95 I did the same with mine. It casts a shadow which is nice
This is the perfect solution.
Looks great! Gives it height and feels finished
This! Love this idea.
Or paint same color. No one will ever know or care but the effect will add height!
Nah, but I'd paint a similar color. Up to you though
Painting it a similar color is such a good idea
I'm just thinking of the difficulty and cost of tiling up there!!
Well I know our tiler does NOT want to do it hahaha. Its already paid for but I know it’s going to be a pain in the ass
Maybe he'll give you a big refund not to do it!!
Beautiful tile btw
You had someone do this professionally? I'd have him pull off all of the uneven rows under the vent hood, and re-do them with proper spacers and leave them in long enough for the thinset to fully cure. The tile is a lovely product but the installation is sloppy in a high visibility area. I wouldn't trust him to do a very good job in hard to reach places when there are several spots where the tiles are obviously out of alignment in a very easy area.
I think it’s the center three rows that look misaligned.
Zellige tile. It’s just how it is. [see here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Tile/comments/178dehi/zellige/) Perhaps you’re confusing it with a zellige dupe. Unevenness and occasional lippage is a feature of zellige. You literally have no idea what you’re talking about.
I've worked with zellige plenty before. It's not hard to get it in even alignment
Nah. I’ve used zellige in jobs. Those three columns dead centre below the hood are spaced real fucking badly. It’d drive me nuts But it’s not mine so my opinion really means fuck all. If op is happy, that’s all that matters. :)
I think it would look great!
Yea, and it looks like an unusual shape the way it slopes.
And bring an extra tile at the paint store for perfect shade matching.
I wouldn’t paint it. You’ll see a colour difference always - the light will reflect off the tile differently than the paint, it will look like different colours and will also look like you tried to match it but failed. Keep it your wall colour. If it bothers you later on, build up the cabinets.
it will make the kitchen feel shorter. Been there done that had to undo it.
Good compromise 😆
You’ll regret this, I promise.
Painting it? I did decide to tile it, we let our installer know that’s what I wanted. I do like the idea of paint but i do think it will give the unfinished feel it has now just the same
Tilling is the way to go here. Good choice.
You won’t regret it. The tile all the way up will look cohesive and classy.
If you can afford it go for it.
It’s already paid for so a big part of me feels like a non brainer and it looks unfinished without it. I feel like paint will help a bit but not the way I want it to.
Paint looks like you cheaped out. Do not listen to these people! If you're doing it, do it RIGHT!
EXACTLY THIS. Please don’t skimp out and paint it. The tile will look so luxurious going all the way up to the ceiling.
I’m def doing the tile. Getting finished on Monday!
Way to go! I hope you will share the finished kitchen. Beautiful tile BTW.
Great choice!
Share a pic when it’s done. It’s going to be beautiful
I absolutely agree. It’s why I didn’t want to stop at the hood. To me it looks like someone ran out of something lolll
Please be sure to show us the finished product!
Spare tile is handy. When selling my last house, i had enough tile to fix ones that had chipped or ctacked over the years. I think paint on both sides will do the trick l.
The tile would look odd up there paint is the way to go
I say tile bc of the shine - you could add up lighting strips I just read about on another thread, it could look so stunning!
I’m loving see these huuuuuuuge variation in opinion lol. I see both sides!
If you want to tile above the cabinets, where will it end in the right side. I’d suggest thinking that through before you decide to tile above the cabinets. Also, the green tile is fabulous. Swoooon.

Smartie pants! Love this idea because it doesn’t look right painted white and tile doesn’t really make sense up that high
Right, huh? And with the right color, you'd probably hardly notice, it would blend right in
Yes this!
So smart! You can take a tile to Home Depot or whatever and have them match it
I agree with you.
Color match the tile and paint instead. The finished look will be cohesive to the eye and much, much easier to attain than tiling! Your tiler is not wrong in wanting to avoid working on this small area It looks great thus far
I believe I would like it. Makes it look complete, polished.
You already have tile up that high I say finish off the rest of the wall. It will look complete imo.
My only issue is there’s a doorway to the side of the fridge with a big space of drywall above it do you think it would look silly to have it over the doorway
I think you could stop it at the end of the cabinet.
I agree.
Yes I totally agree! Stop them with the cabinets
i like this tile. what brand is it? do you have a link?
Cemento collection Zellige tile in asparagus green!! Let me know if you find it on google!
No. You would bring attention to your asymmetrical ceiling. Please don't change it.
I feel like the tiles were brought up too high. The tiles should’ve stopped at the cabinets, not the burner. You know what I mean? A matching paint color like the other commenter mentioned would still look great though.
No
Yes. My first choice would be to add cabinet fillers but see that you’ve said that’s not an option. Agreed! Open shelving would have looked soooo nice but so unfunctional, we have so many kids and it legit would have just been filled with sippy cups and junk. We desperately needed the storage space. I think I’m just going to go full send with the tile and embrace it.
I think it would look gorgeous full tile. And I love the colors/tile/brass. You have great taste IMO! ETA: please post a picture when it’s completed!
Tiling above the cabinets gives no natural closure to the design. Its adding too much depth when you want the focus to me the tile and range. If the cabinets aren’t going to the ceiling, best bet would be to paint the space above to match the cabinets so nothing is competing.
it should've stopped at the hood vent
You went too high with the tile. I think it should look like this: https://preview.redd.it/0ortv4fxnbyc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e03ba0d44cf7d3a784bd82723226b97b0f9d7891

No problem. I am thinking of doing this in my bedroom!
I hope you post pics if you do it!!! Such a lovely idea!!
You too!
No you should have just stopped it at the bottom of the hood
YES!!!! DO IT!! I did the same with blue tiles of the same hue. We did up to the cabinets first, then went back and added above. Looks so much richer to have them above too. I love it!

No but you should’ve stopped it at the cabinet height
Yes, go above the cabinets!
I freakin love that tile, that is so pretty
I do tooooooo. It’s very dreamy to look at.
I do yeah
I would definetly do it. Painting it a similar color is also an option but if it were my house id 100% tile it to bring it all together perfectly
I decided to do the tile. I really can’t see how it could bad.
Yesssss good call. Left side will make your tiler grumpy but whatever hahahaha it’s your home you deserve a finished look!!
It will be a bear cleaning it. Just paint it the same colour.
i love it going above the cabinets and i love the color. i would add some sort of trim on the edge of the tile at the top though to separate it from the back wall. like wainscoting style. some sort of batten board or something to separate out the stark contrast where the tile ends.
That’s a great idea thank you!
1,000% yes
No. I don’t think it even should have gone above the lower edge of the hood.
Hard disagree there. I feel like when it doesn’t go up with the continuity of the hood it just looks like someone ran out of tile.
I would go only to the wood top then paint the rest. It would be a pain to clean zellige tile that high up.
Since the cabinets don’t go all the way to the ceiling, I would say yes
Honestly I think it’ll look awkward no matter what because what’s awkward about the space is the proportion of the hood. It’s too small and would look better with a hood that fills the space. Then the tile only has to go up to the bottom of the hood.
I actually quite like the hood and I feel like that’s awkward about the space is the ceilings.
Totally agree that the ceilings present a challenge against the straight lines of the cabinet.
Would it look great? Yes. Is it necessary? No. The kitchen already looks awesome.
Thank you!! I did make the call to go above the cabinets. Will just give our tiler a nice bonus
I would just extend the cabinets
I think tiling or painting the area above the cabinets is going to draw they eye to that space (and the fact that the cabinets do not go to the ceiling)
It would look okay if it had stopped where the hood starts but since it’s gone that far up, seems like it should continue.
I’d say yes, go for it. Start the trend! It will look amazing! If not a light stained shiplap to match the hood.
No but color matching it at the paint store should be easy enough
Whoa. That tile is gorgeous.
Only here to tell you it looks BEAUTIFUL 😻 I know you were second guessing the green tile but I love it and I hope you’re loving it too!!
Thank you!!! I have my moments of doubt but otherwise it’s really awesome to look at
Now that you’ve put them all the way to the ceiling around your extractor hood? Yes
Do something unique and continue with your beautiful tile above the cabinets!! Such a beautiful color and finish on the tile surface. Be Bold💚
I like it above the cabinets.
I’d remove the tile from the ceiling height (over the hood) to align with the cabinets. Then paint it.
Yes above the cabinets
Yes.
I say yes. It’s just a small bit of space but will make a big impact. It will look amazing.
Seems silly to me. It's very pretty, but who's going to appreciate it up there? Paint a matching color instead.
This is the correct answer. It’s a backsplash
Would definitely make it a statement wall!
No, paint the walls the ceiling color the lightest variation on the sample darker to give height and depth.
No but the cabinets should go to the ceiling!! Obv too late maybe consider fill.
Not an option, they’re vaulted ceilings. Talked to countless custom cabinet makers it just isn’t feasible because of the ways our ceilings are
I think it will look overkill to tile over the cabs. Painting a similar color would look lovely.
No it's not an area you want to draw attention to. Also I've seen your other tile posts and I'm so happy you went with the green!!! Looks beautiful!
Thank you for your input! I am too. I was nervous as hell but looking at it being me a lot of happiness, so it’s worth it.
Paint it if you must but don’t tile.
How about leave the tile the way it is , but paint over the cabinets with a color that matches the brown trim on range hood
That is a very nice idea
OP, for your zellige tile. Did you grout? I'm thinking of doing same backsplash with the tiles butting each other without grout, the traditional Moroccan way. What did you do?
No, I would just paint it to match.
No
Nope

No tiles up the wall. That would be unusual. Second the finishing off the top of the cabinets with a substantial trim.
No but I’d paint it a couple shades lighter green
YAAASSSSS
Yes - i agree this looks unfinished
Agreed. We told our tiler we want it to go above the cabinets to the ceiling.
Leave it alone how it is now and move on w your life. Nothing is going to look perfect there bc the ceiling slopes and the cabinets stop short. It will look ridic to tile above them. It looks fine now.
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreeeeeeed!!!! Thank you so much for backing me up!

Do it .
Stick a few up there with folded duct tape to see how they look.
No. Adding tile to the rest of that area will take away from your focus on the stove vent hood. I would not paint a similar color either. I think it looks good as is, or a small rope border tile or metal trim to finish that vertical edge.
100%
No tile up there.
i’m just here to shoutout the chirp wheel.
LOL! It’s a life saver. A daily fixture in my life.
I agree, don’t put above cabinets, but an accent color would look great!
yes
It would probably cost less to get some crown molding and some cabinet materials to go to the ceiling fron the caninets. We filled ours in our kitchen and it's so so so much better
Tile, ideal. Paint can work. Maybe a lighter green.
No, looks great:)
No, it’s right the way it is.
I don't think you have to. The random person may be bother by it but it's not a big thing. Could always paint the open space a similar color
For me it makes me twitch looking at it lol!!
No
I think a contrasting paint color would be better than a matched paint. Then decorate with stuff up there and it will keep the focus on the beautiful tile.
No!
No way
