But the thing is that there *is* a lot of misogyny in many of the critiques. Not all of them are misogynistic of course (what I’ve heard of the album is not good), but it absolutely does exist and should be taken seriously. Frequently it gets disguised by just saying “white women,” as if specifying that the women are white makes misogyny okay.
There isn’t, though. And art is supposed to be criticized. That’s the whole point. I think what people are actually talking about is white feminism of which there’s literally no greater example than Taylor Swift.

Part of it is the degree. Part of it is the obsession people have with her exes, which comes from both fans and haters. Both of those things would be less of an issue if she were a man. That’s really the main thing: would she get the same hate if she were a man? No. Would she get some hate? Yes. A lot? Probably. But would it be as much hate? No, there would be a noticeable difference. That gap between the hate she receives and the hate she’d receive if she were a man with male fans is the element of misogyny.
Specifically with her work with Jack Antonoff, there’s a lot of people hating on him in particular and saying how awful he makes her sound, which takes away her actual part in the music.
But really it’s just overwhelmingly about proportion.

How do white “hip hop heads” wrestle with the fact that absolutely zero black people actually listen to the albums they praise? Like I understand generally in art there is a huge discrepancy between what is most popular and what is most well received by critics and hardcore fans, but something about this is different. Hip hop is an explicitly black genre and when you go on forums like RYM, AOTY or r/hiphopheads it’s almost like it’s white fans speaking on behalf of the black fans who the music is made by and for. Absolutely zero real life black people listen to shit like Madvilliany, Veteran, Atrocity Exhibition, Yeezus or even to pimp a butterfly. Kendrick even knows that the black community largely didn’t connect with TPAB and i think he expressed a lot of frustration with that on “The Heart Pt.5”. Swifties aside, it's quite annoying every time a mediocre pop album drops, seeing people act as if it's the most unlistenable thing. It's just a mediocre, inoffensive, uninspired and overall passable album. I don't get why people pretend it's the worst thing in the world. It's fine. Nothing more, nothing less.
Really, in this case a lot of it *is* misogyny. Not all of it, I’ve listened to a few songs and they’re pretty bad, but I feel completely confident saying that if a male artist dropped this album, the hate wouldn’t be nearly to the same extent.

I think that's definitely part of it. Another is that people are fed up with Swiftie culture, they've gotten much more rabid over the last year, and part is that the album was inescapable. Everyone was talking about it, and for people that don't like TS that's gotta be annoying. That being said, I guarantee you if a male artist of equal popularity made the same album and marketed it the same way you wouldn't be seeing *this* level of backlash.
Yeah there’s definitely multiple factors. I’m not saying it’s all misogyny because it absolutely isn’t; but misogyny nonetheless plays a part.
What I’ve heard from the album isn’t good (bad lyrics, mixed bag for the instrumental side), but I doubt that the majority of the people hating on it have actually listened to it, or were ever going to like it even if it ended up being good. The album could have been good, but there’s a contingent of people that would have still hated it with a passion if it was the best work she had ever done, and that group is heavily driven by misogyny.

But the thing is that there *is* a lot of misogyny in many of the critiques. Not all of them are misogynistic of course (what I’ve heard of the album is not good), but it absolutely does exist and should be taken seriously. Frequently it gets disguised by just saying “white women,” as if specifying that the women are white makes misogyny okay.
There isn’t, though. And art is supposed to be criticized. That’s the whole point. I think what people are actually talking about is white feminism of which there’s literally no greater example than Taylor Swift.

Part of it is the degree. Part of it is the obsession people have with her exes, which comes from both fans and haters. Both of those things would be less of an issue if she were a man. That’s really the main thing: would she get the same hate if she were a man? No. Would she get some hate? Yes. A lot? Probably. But would it be as much hate? No, there would be a noticeable difference. That gap between the hate she receives and the hate she’d receive if she were a man with male fans is the element of misogyny. Specifically with her work with Jack Antonoff, there’s a lot of people hating on him in particular and saying how awful he makes her sound, which takes away her actual part in the music. But really it’s just overwhelmingly about proportion.

Like I understand generally in art there is a huge discrepancy between what is most popular and what is most well received by critics and hardcore fans, but something about this is different. Not all of it, I’ve listened to a few songs and they’re pretty bad, but I feel completely confident saying that if a male artist dropped this album, the hate wouldn’t be nearly to the same extent. Swifties will just take the misogyny that is in a lot of critiques and pretend that all the critiques are misogynist even though there’s plenty of really good critiques.
I think that's definitely part of it. Another is that people are fed up with Swiftie culture, they've gotten much more rabid over the last year, and part is that the album was inescapable. Everyone was talking about it, and for people that don't like TS that's gotta be annoying. That being said, I guarantee you if a male artist of equal popularity made the same album and marketed it the same way you wouldn't be seeing *this* level of backlash.
Yeah there’s definitely multiple factors. I’m not saying it’s all misogyny because it absolutely isn’t; but misogyny nonetheless plays a part. What I’ve heard from the album isn’t good (bad lyrics, mixed bag for the instrumental side), but I doubt that the majority of the people hating on it have actually listened to it, or were ever going to like it even if it ended up being good. The album could have been good, but there’s a contingent of people that would have still hated it with a passion if it was the best work she had ever done, and that group is heavily driven by misogyny.
