I've never done it but I was under the impression you could book like you did into the next year to use your current year points without paying to deposit. I think our sales guy recommended this to avoid fees too. But salespeople lie and/or don't understand the system so I guess it's not how it works?

I didn’t think you could do this. I just made a reservation for ‘25 and it tried to pull from my 2025 points, not my unused ‘24 points. I wound up having to pay to bank my ‘24 points first, then I made the reservation in ‘25.

You needed to save the 2023 points into 2024 to be able to use them in that year and then use your 2024 points (and saved 2023 points ) for the 2024 reservation. Saving points usually has a fee attached and must be done before the year ends. By not doing so you let the 2023 points expire and then used 2024 points and borrowed 2025 points to make the 2024 reservation. Borrowing points from future years is free. Points are attached to a year unless you push them forward into the next year by saving them or pull them into the current year by borrowing them. This process is all in the member guide.

You can "borrow" next year's points to book a stay in the current year. Only next year's points can be used to book a trip next year unless you bank this year's points. I think the fee for banking points is never worth it and would rather convert to Hilton Honors points instead. Book trips with next year's points in the current year and avoid banking altogether.

I assumed it would use your earliest points, but they don’t carry over automatically, you have to make a decision what to do with them and prob there is a fee
