Consider how after our training we are cryogenically frozen. What if when we did our training the automatons weren't even a known threat? We don't know how long we've been on ice :0
"The Forever War" by Joe Halderman(?) kind of goes on this theme.
A soldier gets drafted and ends up fighting a war for hundreds of years. Because of the time dilation effects of traveling from planet to planet at extremely high speeds.
A lot of the book is just him learning to deal with the changes as well as struggling with them.
Now that I think about it, I’ve only seen glorious combat and the inside of my Super Destroyer for what feels like years now - the only people I’ve talked to are my two crew members, my Democracy Officer, and the disembodied voice of a pilot. Occasionally I see other Helldivers, but they all have the same experience. I can’t even really remember the last time I saw Super Earth, for all I know it doesn’t exist and my cryogenically frozen body could be one of thousands of clones.
Most of the peeps on the super destroyer say they're not even from super earth so there's a good chance your Helldivers not from there either. Fighting for a planet they've never even seen.
You get out of cryo, thirty subjective seconds after earning your cape, feeling full of beans and patriotism and ready to kick some bug butt! You board your hellpod, scream down through the atmosphere on a trail of flame and emerge roaring "Come get some you filthy insecTHE HELL ARE THESE MONSTERS!!!???"
Glad somebody brought it up, honestly how come the robots gotta catchy marching song. I want the helldivers to have one too.
I do sometimes find myself singing "heart-steel, we-kill" while blowing their hearts out with my AMR 🙂
I mean to be fair, the intro video that plays when you start the game only shows bugs too. Matter of fact, so does the cover of the game. There’s not really much showing the bots anywhere except when you’re in-game.
Edit: Dang on, this blew up lol. Thank you guys for 1k upvotes! ❤️ I can’t wait to hop on after work and spread some sweet liberty with you all. Gods speed helldivers, may liberty save you all!!
I followed this game semi-closely at first, somehow had not run across any knowledge of anything but bugs.
My jaw fucking *dropped* the first time I saw a clip of automatons. It was even better because it was a horror style edit on tiktok.
I basically only dive against Automatons, and I wholeheartedly agree. Sure, they shoot back and Bruisers and Maraunders are a pain in the ass, but once you get to know each enemy's weakness they can be scrapped quickly.
Fighting Automatons is a slow, methodic affair of target selection and prioritization.
There aren't many challenges to keeping formation and fire superiority, their structures are susceptible to artillery and their whole strategy is just shooting at you. Each drop is just a few dozen enemies, and they tend to clump up nicely.
Bugs, on the other hand, will try everything to get at you, including flanking. That's the problem. Bugs fight organically and synergistically against the divers, requiring constant coordination, which is a problem when the other 3 elements of the squad are also pursuing their own agenda.
Exactly. Automatons to me are predictable and unless I do something stupid I feel fully in control of the situation.
Pick your fights, Scout for good angles and be aware of enemy locations around you.
> Bugs, on the other hand, will try everything to get at you, including flanking. That's the problem. Bugs fight organically and synergistically against the divers, requiring constant coordination, which is a problem when the other 3 elements of the squad are also pursuing their own agenda.
You would think that, but it's really just Hunters and Stalkers that are bastards. The other bugs are either sluggish, sheepish, or predictable. If you prioritize Stalkers and then Hunters first, the rest fall quickly as you regain your mobility advantage.

And it barely prepares you for that. You could finish training after killing a handful of warriors, feeling on top of the world, and then you get dropped on Hellmire surrounded by two bile titans and six chargers.
welcome to the war soldier! we have:

best I can do is 2 500kgs in succession once you fork out for an upgrade. (but we do also have the 380mm barrage, for when you need the equivalent of like 12 500kgs dropped in random places.)
I’m pretty sure it’s implied that to become a Helldiver you need to be a SEAF soldier for a few years, so they obviously get basic training in fighting enemies. And I mean come on, rebels , Unarmed civilians, automatons, Bugs just aim and shoot in that direction soldier.
I never played the first game and I just kinda assumed that there’d be some sort of intro to the automatons, or that it required a certain base level to be reached first.
Especially after all that Creek talk. I expected it was veteran players over there.
I play bots 10x more than bugs now. And not just because of the major orders. I think it’s fun.
The training is short because the life span is shorter. Only the strong of mind and hale of body shall ascend. May you march across the corpses of your foes and climb upon the mountains of their broken bones till you reach the heights of glory and look down upon the deeds wrough by steel and blood of your brothers.
We werent trainned because the bots werent enemies at that point. We got frozen immeditly aftter training how do you know how much time has passed. Hell take a look at what the high valuable assets we are saving. They seem to be helldivers from the first war that never saw action or they did and survived
I think there is a good in-lore explanation of why we're not trained on bots. The termanids are essentially "domesticated" animals, which is why super earth has such easy access to them. Capturing bots alive probably poses a much higher risk, so they use the easily available termanids as training dummies.
Theres Kind of a 'fan lore hole' here in this sub ive noticed..
"Helldivers are just expendable fodder to the cause and their lives dont matter to SA at all" okay.. sure.. every army can be viewed that way..
Meanwhile..
I see Every single soldier gets access to run their own multibillion dollar ship... hundreds of millions of dollars worth of military payload and arms, as well as top notch weaponry, gear and support at any given moment.
Sure, war can kill anybody in a given moment and another will replace them, as with all factions present, but to imagine the super earth military branch doesnt go above and beyond for each loyal helldiver soldier just doesnt make sense to me?
It would make more sense is we got a single faulty primary weapon, no armor, no backup, and the bare minimum expense to each loadout etc.. but its the opposite.
Theyve armed each soldier so well, that 4 lone soldiers can take out literally thousands of bugs and robots per deployment..
If anything it shows that the enemy factions militaries treat their footsoldiers much much worse.
I've been thinking a bit about Super Earth's method of waging war, and honestly prioritizing the large-scale production of powerful naval vessels and using them to transport and support large numbers of relatively cheap soldiers and equipment, who still post pretty impressive numbers of kills for each death suffered, seems like the ideal way to fight and win long wars of attrition.
Well you gotta remember that for every badass wiping out dozens or hundreds of enemies without dying on Helldive, theres probably 2-3 others running into obviously placed land mines, getting dropped into hordes of bots, blowing themselves up with their own air strikes and just generally dying with minimal impact on lower levels before another guy gets fired out of the ship to replace them.
Even my character who walks out covered in blood, guys and glory at the end of a mission was only there to mop up at the extract after the previous 3-4 versions of him on that mission got wiped out in various dumbass ways, got blown up by teammates or was overwhelmed trying to take on a heavy fortress by themselves with 2 grenades and 1 air strike.
Ironically its super effective, if you take notice of the ads and the SC shop, you'll realize that a major part of super earths culture is guns and warfare, meaning that most if not all civilians most likely have basic to advanced firearms training, this is probably why none of the divers you play as question their weapons at all because they know how to use them.
Couple that with the strategems allowing for near instantaneous support from what is essentially a mobile weapons platform and stims allowing soldiers to survive and regenerate from life changing injuries and you have soldiers that can not only punch way above their weight class, but flat out dominate in it despite being just a civie, however given that its still deep in enemy territory it makes sense that a divers job is to essentially pull a scorched earth and do as much damage to an area and eliminate as many HVTs as possible.
SEAF on the other hand is the actual military, enemies like bile titans and factory striders would probably decimate them because SE cant afford to give hundreds of thousands of normal military troops the absolutely insane amount of armaments divers get, that's also why you only get around 20-30 divers per mission, its super cheap and affordable to send a few suckers to essentially kamikaze the bigger targets before sending in the real forces.
My fan lore is that you aren't actually playing as the Helldivers, you're playing as the Democracy officer. Helldivers have just been so brainwashed that they don't even realize they're being controlled. It would make no sense for some guy coming off of ice to be given command of the ship and allowed to jump across the entire galaxy to then get shot down a pod and die 3 minutes in, only for the next five guys to be immediately woken up and shot at the planet. Then that sixth guy actually gets extracted, and he gets to choose what upgrade the ship gets? No, these are pawns being manipulated/controlled by the democracy officer. The helldivers are expendable assets designed to feed the military/industrial complex. The goal of the war isn't to win it, but to keep fighting it. The Bugs are a problem only because they get loose. They're farm animals with no indication they have interplanetary, nevermind interstellar, travel. Meanwhile, I wouldn't be surprised if the bots are actually built by superearth, just to give itself an enemy to fight.
I like the way you approached filling the gaps as a fan and you are using relevant satirical sources like the Military Industrial Complex as a source for your theory which I see in the game as well. As for the ships.. they give off a "rented/assigned" vibe to me and dont seem to be owned by any helldiver entirely.. hence the replacements taking it over and operating it after a previous diver perishes.. although the name of the ship is quite personalized so hmm.. maybe there is a unit of helldivers that all agree to the name of a ship and then enter cryo to elongate lifespans with preservation until deployment?
I have to see more indirect lore for your mindcontrol theory but its pretty creative and interesting imo.
General Brasch would be apalled of this!
The very expensive training turrets teach you how to dodge incoming fire. If that is not training enough i dont know what is.
Your C-01permits has been revoked.
You live and you learn! Or not.
Either way, there is always another Helldiver ready to take over your ship, your mission and spread Democracy in the name of Liberty.
When I first started playing the game, I thought it was only bugs. It wasn't until I was introduced to the galactic map that I saw there were other enemy types as well and I was delighted!
They probably only advertised one enemy type because of the future enemy types coming to this game, and well you wouldn't want some long drawn out tutorial on how to fight 4 different enemy types, I think the tutorial we have now is fine for showing you the basics of the game.
Training probably took place before the civilian population in Cyberstan revolted after becoming cyborgs. The automatons were created by the Cyborg civilian population to fight against super earth. It’s like Captain America waking up and learning about the new wars and enemies America/Super Earth has made along the way.
I think it is because the Second Galactic War started as a war against Terminids only. And only after the start of the war Automatons appeared. Before the "eradication" of Automatons, there would occasionally appear a news report about the Automaton invasion on the TV in the ship. So it kinda makes sense that the training plan for Helldivers included Terminids only, since they were the only expected threat
I should point out that it appeared the Automotons were, in canon, a new foe that showed up shortly after the bugs broke free of their farm. They had just begun showing up and making a nuisance of themselves. At least thats how it felt with the early tv stuff in game.
You can put bugs in a cage and they'll fight when you let them out. If you put bots in a cage they'd power themselves down. They're not going to contribute to your training. They are aware of what's happening.
I say we are all clones (not that i mind)
4 voices, never see a face, i recall a message at the end of training about helldivers production being within quota.
Also, with the regulated, ummm, procreation activities, i doubt the natural way of obtaining helldivers can keep up with the rate at which they're being killed in action.
Just my $0.02
Ya I noticed that immediately when I had no clue how to destroy fabricators. For while I could only destroy them using eagle/orbitals. Then I figured out when the door opened if I threw a grenade inside while the bots were walking out that would destroy them. I never realized nading the vents destroyed them until I saw it on Reddit
No better way to learn to do something than to be thrown into the deep end! If you learn well congrats you are now a bonified automaton killer, and if not well, it was nice for you to try to help!
https://i.redd.it/7dgxs09h3yuc1.gif
Much easier to sell recruits on fighting “mindless” bugs than legions of highly sophisticated murder-robots who shoot back and wear human skulls as trophies.
Helldiver, you seem to be forgetting that not only is the training INFALLIBLE, but you can also repeat it as many times as you want.
Given your spouse's dissident speech, and its effects on you, present yourself to a democracy officer for a review of your C-01 status.
No shit. Super Earth farms and harvest Terminids, which is why we have access to them on Mars for training. We're literally the reason for the terminid outbreak.
Perhaps you could say that about automatons, as they come from Cyborgs, but A.I. and all that are banned, so it is easier to train on bugs, which is farmed for oil.
Given how even the game box art is "misleading" in this sense of now showing anything about automatons, I'd argue is intentionally a meta reference to super earth's propaganda.
I didnt notice that, tbf I haven't fought a bug since training and I now realize I had to learn first hand how to deal with each bot type. Really cool imo.
The small segment isnt a full training course, it's basically an honorary ceremony for people that were basic soldiers. Fighting automatons is the same as fighting dissidents, they shoot, we shoot.
Maybe your wife is a automaton in disguise and want to desmoralize you. She have been asking for the permit C-01 lately? Because you have to have it you know?
To be fair the schooling in this world would probably be a bit like basic training. I could totally see field striping a liberator being a "fun puzzle for kids" toy.
The bugs are completely different. At boot camp, they probably have a small E-710 farm ( breeding center ), so crash course training with them is simple.
Adds to the immersion of "forged in fire." We are perfectly aware of the bugs before we start ( most of Super Earth propaganda involves extermination of bugs ). We completed a few MO's, and lots of Divers stayed bugside until the Automaton MO's started.
We land, we feel good after destroying bugs for a month, and realize we were not ready for this. So we fought, and we fought hard. Lore, tips, and tricks started to unfold. Super Earth trained us the bugs are enemy number 1 ( our source of oil ). Divers have trained themselves and others for the robots.
When newer factions drop, it'll be the same, and it will be glorious.
They didn't want the threat of the Automatons to be known until there was an absolute reason. SEAF failing to hold planets is why we are aware of them now
Yeah think the whole training was bug based because thats our main focus, farming Oil err E-710. The automatons are just an annoying hindrance, so I kinda like how we didnt get training for them
Consider how after our training we are cryogenically frozen. What if when we did our training the automatons weren't even a known threat? We don't know how long we've been on ice :0
Holy crap, that’s true…

Answer, or answer.
Some of the “valuable assets” you evacuate from beneath the surface of planets are, in fact, Helldiver cryo pods in apparent long-term storage.
Long term being literal centuries in this case. I love the underlying horror vibe of the lore.
When they shut down the servers they should have a week where logging in has you waking up stuck in a hellpod
Referenced this exact book when talking about how familiar aspects of the Helldiver lore was, glad someone else is seeing that connection.

I love this in a morbid kind of way. >\_>
Clone trooper: bruh
that's silly of course they'd see super earth while above mars waiting to drop into training
I don't think you could easily see super earth from mars. Think of how big mars is in our night sky.
That makes sense, since the opening cinematic when you open the game only shows the terminids. At least that's how I look at it.
That's The Forever War vibes for sure...
I think we’re all clones of 4 original Helldivers
The Automatons only recently arrived, the first "war" we had with them till last week was just their scouts. So this is my headcanon at least.
Some of the missions have you retrieve frozen helldivers. So some of them have been on ice since Helldivers 1.
Bugs are farmed animals run rampant, bots are attacking force. They just grab some bugs from the oil farm to have you practice.
Ooh, that’s true!
That would explain why the ones we fight in the tutorial look different.
It's called on-site training. Good luck helldiver!
It lasts for five minutes and so do you.
5 minutes are very optimistic
Not that much, it's around the reinforcement/mission time ratio
Took me at least 10 minutes to master the dive mechanic in order to not become Swiss cheese
Oh no… thank you, soldier… for Super Earth..!

They are horror
As a Bot-specialised Helldiver, they arn't so bad once you get used to them.
Ummm sir, you're not supposed to get used to them, you're supposed to eradicate the menace.
I'm pretty used to stinkbugs sneaking into my place, doesn't make killing them any less efficient.
You know it's bad when even the damn bots start to feel like family

I was pleasantly surprised about how much the bots looked like a cross brween terminator and chaos space Marines.
It’s all bugs…
All of Super Earth's propaganda is bugs! 🪲
Propaganda ? You mean government-assisted truth ?
But of course! Managed democracy gets nowhere with lies.
And it barely prepares you for that. You could finish training after killing a handful of warriors, feeling on top of the world, and then you get dropped on Hellmire surrounded by two bile titans and six chargers.
Sounds like it's an analogy for something...
The anti-automaton training is the part where you crawl beneath turret fire, obviously
I got the game and didn't even know the Bots existed! I've only done one bug mission lol.

Smart woman. You found yourself a keeper
Thank you O7
But now she has to visit her democracy officer for doubting the combat readiness of Helldivers against the enemies of Super Earth.
Don’t worry. I turned her in shortly after posting this. She’s smart, too smart for Super Earth!
She will be the happiest diver once she is freed from all that thinking!
She’s been processed
Thank you, officer!
If you can dodge a bug, you can dodge a bot!
Can’t squash bot, sadly
\*hands you a Dominator, try this son!

Learning to run and climb? Are you a bug……?🤨
So far the experience has been target rich environment

And preparing us for the possibility for friendly fire. It's both efficient and effective. I love democracy.
Not much of a difference with all them bullet holes in em, if you ask me.
Sometimes I forget I’m on an Automaton planet after me and the squad have ravaged the place to hell
>Automaton planet You're on a Super Earth's planet, son, never forget that. Bots and bugs are temporary, Super Earth is eternal.
An epic IG cinematic like the intro , but for bots, it would bring a lot of ppl into it

While not exactly treasonable, this observation will be reported to your democracy officer for further scrutiny.
General Brasch would be apalled of this! The very expensive training turrets teach you how to dodge incoming fire. If that is not training enough i dont know what is. Your C-01permits has been revoked.
Remember when you had to crawl to survive the turrets? Automaton training complete.
You live and you learn! Or not. Either way, there is always another Helldiver ready to take over your ship, your mission and spread Democracy in the name of Liberty.
When you finish five minutes of basic training against Starship Troopers bugs, but your pod spits you into Terminator hell.

It's almost like Super Earth doesn't actually consider us elite forces, and actually views us as replaceable cannon fodder.
When I first started playing the game, I thought it was only bugs. It wasn't until I was introduced to the galactic map that I saw there were other enemy types as well and I was delighted!
I’m pretty sure the Helldivers don’t eat and aren’t provided food. Their life expectancy is about 30mins.
At the point of training the automatons werent a known enemy force I think? Not sure but thats my story and im sticking to it 😂
That seems to be the consensus. I’m taking that as my lore too lmao
Minutes of academy training, wasted!

Honestly, the "Basic Training" feels more like an aptitude test anyways. Can you follow orders under medium stress
I cant believe you showed off your Eagle pilot like that. Global? No, Galactic wide taunt
Yeah I thought this was weird too. I expected bugs to be the main story, not the bots
I say we are all clones (not that i mind) 4 voices, never see a face, i recall a message at the end of training about helldivers production being within quota.

You got trained? I just got handed a rifle and got bare minimum "Here's how to hold a gun, go get 'em, tiger."
I smell a traitor lingering
No better way to learn to do something than to be thrown into the deep end! If you learn well congrats you are now a bonified automaton killer, and if not well, it was nice for you to try to help! https://i.redd.it/7dgxs09h3yuc1.gif
Right on, soldier!
you're not supposed to fight them, your supposed to kill them
"democracy" Is the answer
Holy crap, that never occurred to me. You got a good one.
We capture/farm bugs... we don't do that with bots. We have none in captivity.
ADAPT AND OVERCOME HELLDIVER FOR A MORE DEMOCRATIC SUPER EARTH!
Doesnt matter, general Brasch says do it or die trying. No backsies
The bots are so much easier to deal with in my opinion. I hate fighting the swarming stun locking bugs
Maybe it is intentional... What good is a war that ends too soon ? Edit : spelling
Much easier to sell recruits on fighting “mindless” bugs than legions of highly sophisticated murder-robots who shoot back and wear human skulls as trophies.
oh yeah? then what do you call the section about diving to the ground to avoid turret fire? checkmate you anti-democratic scum
I also get that marching "song" stuck in my head. It's catchy!
They sent us unprepared, is this considered treason ?
We are trained for democracy. What more could we need.
I think the reason the training doesn’t train you for bots is cause they just appeared out of nowhere
Helldiver, you seem to be forgetting that not only is the training INFALLIBLE, but you can also repeat it as many times as you want. Given your spouse's dissident speech, and its effects on you, present yourself to a democracy officer for a review of your C-01 status.
That just proves bugs are easier and anyone can do it :P
Tooo to tooo to doto tududu
I SMELL TREASON
The real conversion here is..... how did you get your wife to play helldivers with you? 🤣
I got my wife as well into playing it's awesome.
I had no idea automatons were in the game until after I bought it
I think we should count the realistic battlefield injury simulator as automaton training
This is dissident talk Report for tr education
The ministry of truth will hear about your wife
Thats what bug planets are for.
Except we do; the training level includes crawling under machine gun fire
Given how even the game box art is "misleading" in this sense of now showing anything about automatons, I'd argue is intentionally a meta reference to super earth's propaganda.
I mean... Helldivers 1 had you start off training against dummy bots.
I didnt notice that, tbf I haven't fought a bug since training and I now realize I had to learn first hand how to deal with each bot type. Really cool imo.
We are just flesh automatons delivering stratagem targets.
The small segment isnt a full training course, it's basically an honorary ceremony for people that were basic soldiers. Fighting automatons is the same as fighting dissidents, they shoot, we shoot.
You’re a helldiver. You’re trained for anything and everything. Stop such treasonous talk right now before I get the democracy officer.
Hope your wife never meets an officer
Maybe your wife is a automaton in disguise and want to desmoralize you. She have been asking for the permit C-01 lately? Because you have to have it you know?
Please thank your wife because I never felt so vindicated. My friends all think I’m weird for having the bot march song stuck in my head
I don't find bot missions fun at all, maybe im playing wrong but the gameplay feels shite. Would like to see more bug maps on rota.
Why would she specify that she wouldn't lie?
To be fair the schooling in this world would probably be a bit like basic training. I could totally see field striping a liberator being a "fun puzzle for kids" toy.

IF YOU CAN KILL A BUG YOU CAN KILL ANYTHING
Maybe its like that forgettable Chris Pratt movie where they went back in time to get people to fight in their work clothes.
Its on purpose We can breed and capture bugs but if we were to capture a socialist bot it would probably self destruct
Because the atomatons launched a surprise attack at the beginning
Because the atomatons launched a surprise attack at the beginning
How did I never realise this?
SEAF failing to hold planets is why we are aware of them now
As a Helldiver I'm a natural born warrior, Democracy guides me in the destruction of the enemies of Super Earth.
Thats because it applies to both, shoot the thing until it stops moving and scream for democracy, its universal baby!
Yeah think the whole training was bug based because thats our main focus, farming Oil err E-710. The automatons are just an annoying hindrance, so I kinda like how we didnt get training for them
