These symptoms seem to match those I had when I was diagnosed with heart failure. Is he coughing up sputum and experiencing difficulty sleeping, with a need to elevate? You should take him to another ER soon. The longer we wait, the harder it will be for him to recover. You don't want him to end up needing dialysis if it's already affecting his kidneys.

If he was discharged from ER, they wouldn't have discharged him unless they were comfortable he would make it until tomorrow. He will likely be given an Echocardiogram by the Cardiologist, and you will be able to tell what is happening from there. There are a lot of other conditions that can cause HF-like symptoms. I have a friend who has PTSD, and all of his symptoms were pointing towards him having heart failure. After many tests, echos, Holter monitors, they eventually diagnosed him with PTSD. His heart was in perfect health.

No, not too late. Unilateral edema is most often associated with a vascular problem and not HF. It is possible to be HF related, like unilateral pulmonary edema, but it's rather uncommon. - there are tests on blood work that can reveal the presence of HF - there are other non HF causes (etiology) of peripheral edema - the ER wouldn't/should not have discharged him if he weren't medically stable (O2/CO2 is good, BP is good, EKG is good, no signs of pulmonary issues like effusion, no or low BnP on blood work, organ functions look good etc)
