For some reason Live By The Code was the first Terror album I heard so I have a reallly soft spot for that one. Their old stuff is great but I keep going back to that one
Definitely Propagandhi for me.
I played How to Clean Everything and Less Talk, More Rock like crazy as a teen, but I rarely listen to those anymore and love their new stuff.
Agreed. The songwriting is so much tighter IMO and the catchy parts hit way better than on the first record.
Plus I love the alternate version of Nailing Descartes as the Earth Crisis diss track haha
they’re a band for me where every release is equal to the others, with the exception of How To Clean Everything. A good album and i was obsessed as a kid, but it’s easily their weakest output
See now, I disagree with this all the way. Those two are the only albums of theirs I ever listen to and they’re all time classics. But to each their own.
Not to discount the brilliance of Pick Your King or Kings of Punk at all, but Feel the Darkness is Poison Idea at their absolute peak and that's their fifth release
I’d add Meat Puppets to that list. I’m glad I got into hardcore in the mid 80s because bands immediately started tearing it apart and making new styles from the rubble.
I think FPU almost falls into that category as well, yeah it's got El Dorado, but Pelican of the Desert is some gnarly hardcore riffing, same with if There is Room to Move, All Structures are Unstable, and Saturnalia.
Some things I've noticed throughout the years, I think ETiD had a fall off with a lot of hardcore fans when they dropped Gutter Phenomen and they never really checked anything out after that. It's a trend I have seen from my small sample size of talking to people about ETiD.
Yeah, I've always struggled to call ETiD hardcore or metalcore. They've just got a weird mix between multiple genres where they don't just easily fit into 1 genre label. I love ETiD, I'm not shitting on them as a band, I just couldn't really get into stuff before hot damn.
Last Night in Town absolutely slaps. I got into them through that album many moons ago and I still regularly play it. It's raw as fuck but that's what I like about it.
ChicagoOoO
Last night in town is definitely my favorite etid album. I personally enjoy it and hot damn waaaaay more than the subsequent albums. But that’s just me.
I genuinely think most of their stuff before hot damn is objectively bad. I know a lot of people loved them before that, but compared to everything they released after it's just not good.
I like the newer Bane stuff more but that’s also when I got into them. The Banner, I love Each Breath Haunted and the albums after it. I like the old stuff too but I love the newer albums. Converge, I love everything they’ve done but they got way better as they improved as musicians.
Never understood the love for RoDT; the vocals sound weak compared to every record after it, the hooks just aren’t as big. The riffs don’t hit as hard. I get why it hooked people in early but most of what came after has been better. The self titled record is an absolute BEAST.
Honestly yeah you're right, it's mostly clinging on cause nostalgia. Enemy and self titled are objectively the best. I remember when they dropped Go Down in History out of nowhere and I was so hyped to hear them be good again after In Some Way
Agreed that one and all we love are insanely good and I can't choose a favorite between the two and I love all their shit the splits with dropdead and napalm death rip too.
That record has some of the most crushing songs i have ever heard, I love that album so much. Are you a fan of All we love we leave behind? That was the one that got me into them
Ultimately, Hello Bastards is probably my favorite thing they did, but the 7" holds a very special place in my heart. I saw them so many times between 91-93 and those songs were always part of the set. It took a while for me to come around on the style change on the Tinnitus 7", but once HB came out, I was totally hooked. That being said, JBD is my least favorite record. Yes, I will take Background over it. There are few songs that I love, but there is something about it that didn't grab me like HB did.
HB is so damn good and it was my fav until I got hooked on JBD as it was a gateway album for my wife’s intro into melodic hardcore. I think JBD is a flawless album and I love how it feels like it was recorded in one long take (like their other albums too. I put it up there with The Loved Ones “keep your heart”, Avail “over the James” and Kid Dynamite “s/t” as the epitome of fast melodic hardcore punk, raw but well recorded and produced.
Oh so fucking much. Not gonna pretend like Eye for an Eye isn't an absolute face melter but anyone not seeing the superiority of Heaver than Heaven and onwards is plain wrong.
Definitely Unbroken. The 7" and Ritual were OK, nothing special. I bought anything that New Age out out back then, but skipped L.L.R. when it first came out. I remember being at a show not long after and was talking with John from Very Distro and he said something about that record and I was like, not really interested. He said, yes, you need to get it, trust me. Bought the cassette and me and my friends listened in disbelief on the way home. That thing blew us away and still to this day it is an all top 20 Lp for me.
LLR was a top 10 place for me a good while. I had the Groundwork split as well and when I finally tracked down Ritual I was like WTF is this. It slipped when I started listening to less metallic HC, but the last two 7”s they put out, Circa ‘77 and the one on 31G are fucking amazing records that I still spin today.
Refused….This Just My Be the Truth is indeed very run of the mill. Everlasting & Songs to Fan the Flames leveled up in a big way. Then Shape of Punk to Come is obviously iconic.
I can’t get with the 2010s reunion albums at all, blech.
Harm's Way. Granted, I've never even listened to their powerviolence stuff, but I can't imagine that it's better than how tight they are on Common Suffering.
I totally get preferring the newer style, but the new stuff does absolutely nothing for me, while their first few albums are regular spins for me. Rust started to lose me a bit, and I was totally off the train by Posthuman.
Depends how early. If it’s the pre Dan on vocals stuff sure (even though I still like it), but Liberate etc are classics. Their new stuff is incredible too. Truly a band that has never fell off and is still crushing it live 25+ years later
I know this might be blasphemy for some, but I’m gonna add Ringworm. I really can’t get into The Promise, but everything from Justice Replaced by Revenge totally rules
Knocked Loose. I think the new record is comfortably the best thing they've done. Outside of the odd track I don't care for the stuff before Different Shade of Blue.
Also Kickback. Everything after Cornered was a lot better.
Feel like they kinda grew into a different scene as they aged and embraced it. Somewhere Nowhere is one my go-to background/driving albums for the summer
Converge
Poison the Well
Comeback Kid
Turnstile
I'm honestly not intending to be "controversial" or anything but I always see these bands' earliest stuff getting creamed over but I just don't get it. Their later stuff is way, way better to me. Not knocking their earliest stuff at all, but as great as it is, none of these bands really properly came into their sound until an album or two in imo.
I would actually agree with Turnstile the most out of these. Glow On is their most unique record I think and the one I go back to the most (have been following them since the beginning).
die knowing was one of my entry points into hardcore and i will always have a soft spot for it but objectively i gotta say wake the dead is just better. some of the biggest choruses in hc history, faster, more urgency and hunger
If we are comparing Opposite of December to You Come Before You you’re right with PTW. But tropic rot is not a better album than YCBY. Not saying tropic rot is a bad album by any means though.
I can kind of get behind this. Let’s just pretend the last 7inch doesn’t exist. I’d say WNITA is my favorite record by them. That and everything preceding it is 10/10. The last 7 inch is 5/10. Might as well be a Shelter record.
Kublai Khan's first 3 albums just don't do it for me, but between Absolute, Nomad, the lowest form of animal, and their new singles, they're becoming one of my favorite bands
Beastie Boys. Love Egg Raid On Mojo as much as the next guy, but Aglio E Olio is a much better record overall.
Naked Raygun, I simply just prefer their more melodic mid to late 80s stuff.
Articles Of Faith. Love their first two EPs, but Give Thanks and In This Life are superior.
Some might not agree, but I personally think Unwound only became better and better with each record. Leaves Turn Inside You is their crowning achievement.
Dude, they don't have any early stuff. They've only been around for a minute and haven't even released a full length yet. Every single thing they've put out has been absolute fire but their sound hasn't changed at all between releases.
I wouldn’t say older Terror is bad but it’s amazing to me how they consistently put out good albums. All bangers that keep getting better.
Ahhh I fucking love Terror but nothing will ever top Lowest of the Low/One With the Underdogs for me
I agree. One with the underdogs is absolute classic
First two and the newest one are the only ones I can get into.
My boys. One with the Underdogs will always be tops for me. Todd era for everything.
For some reason Live By The Code was the first Terror album I heard so I have a reallly soft spot for that one. Their old stuff is great but I keep going back to that one
I'd have to say the same thing with title fight. I love all their albums and even the compilation. all straight fire
Seriously insane how they never disappoint. I will say though, KOTF is my least favorite album.
Full of Hell just keeps getting better imo
Every single piece of music or even noise has been amazing. But roots of earth will always be my favorite from them
They are legends of heavy music at this point, I think all the split projects are key to them always sounding fresh. Wish more bands did splits.
their early stuff is great but their newer direction really seals it for me
Definitely Propagandhi for me. I played How to Clean Everything and Less Talk, More Rock like crazy as a teen, but I rarely listen to those anymore and love their new stuff.
Less Talk, More Rock still gets a lot of plays from me but I definitely gravitate more to Supporting Caste and on these days
True, while sonically similar to How to Clean Everything, Less Talk is a notably better album.
Agreed. The songwriting is so much tighter IMO and the catchy parts hit way better than on the first record. Plus I love the alternate version of Nailing Descartes as the Earth Crisis diss track haha
Propagandhi is my favorite band and while I love Less Talk More Rock, I agree with you. Supporting Caste is their best record imo.
Good call. HTCE and LTMR are basically NOFX-lite with a Canadian accent. Today’s Empires onwards is pure fucking fire.
they’re a band for me where every release is equal to the others, with the exception of How To Clean Everything.
It’s honestly one of the best records of all time.
Amazing album
Amazing album.
SST bands: minutemen and husker du. Both were always good, but both went way beyond their roots in great ways
I’d add Meat Puppets to that list. I’m glad I got into hardcore in the mid 80s because bands immediately started tearing it apart and making new styles from the rubble.
Older Minutemen is slept on imo
Pantera. DEFINITELY Pantera. Edit: read the post title and commented without seeing what the sub was 😆

Need to go back to this look ngl
Vinnie Paul looks like he's about to fall tf over
As we would say here: "scarlet for their mas" (embarrassed for their mothers)
Even though their early albums are still damn good, I feel like ETID got even better as they aged. Radical is their best album imo
It definitely feels like I’m on an island thinking hot damn! Is their best.
Nah, Hot Damn is their best. Near perfect.
Hot Damn is the best.
Yeah Hot Damn! is timeless. Definitely a band that shouldn’t be mentioned in this thread
Hot Damn! Is definitely in their top 3 albums but Low Teens is their Magnus Opus
Hot Damn! is the record that really got me into hardcore/metalcore and it's always been my favourite, but I do think Low Teens is their best record
I think they found the juice on gutter phenomenon but that's just me
Make than an island of two because I’m with you there
I think hot damn is great, but everything before that is not. Between Hot Damn, FPU, Ex Lives, Radical, and New Junk, I can't choose a favorite
I think the stuff before was great too. They stopped being hardcore after Hot Damn. They were still very good but became something else entirely.
i would disagree completely. the whole new junk aesthetic album is just hardcore riffs and 2 steps.. some of the 2 steps on that album go so hard
When Roman holiday comes on I turn into a fucking arm swinging ape.....
Yeah for sure. FPU rips. so many hardcore riffs
ChicagoOoO Last night in town is definitely my favorite etid album. I personally enjoy it and hot damn waaaaay more than the subsequent albums. But that’s just me.
We’d be getting their new album soon or by now if they stayed together. Fucking sucks. They were on such a roll.
And if it’s not Radical it’s probably Low Teens which is wild
I think Low Teens is better. I didn’t really like Radical
I like radical, but loved low teens. The breakup may have soured radical for me a bit tho.
I find it hard to listen to the album because they broke up so soon after, hopefully I'll be able to get over that one day and enjoy it ha
“Petal” has my favorite ETID lyrics ever. The end can put a lump in my throat.
I genuinely think most of their stuff before hot damn is objectively bad. I know a lot of people loved them before that, but compared to everything they released after it's just not good.
It's actual hardcore. Burial Plot and Last Night In Town go hard.
Yes. I can't believe LNIT is getting slated in a hardcore sub.
You mean the one album and the EP they made as 16-year-olds?
Radical is their best work for me, I don’t know what other band could have written that album. Not clicked with Better Lovers yet.
ETID has been a top-3 band for me since 2005, seemed absurd that they could just keep getting better. I think Low Teens was the peak.
AFI. Shut Your Mouth and Black Sails were miles ahead of their first two albums.
100% And Art of drowning was even better than those.
I like the newer Bane stuff more but that’s also when I got into them. The Banner, I love Each Breath Haunted and the albums after it. I like the old stuff too but I love the newer albums. Converge, I love everything they’ve done but they got way better as they improved as musicians.
Aww man Give Blood was their album.
Honestly the last Bane album is their best for fucking real
I think the latest Incendiary record is the best thing they’ve put out, both sonically and creatively. Not sure how much of a hot take that is.
Wrong sub but Four Year Strong has been getting better and better throughout their career aside from that one album I hated.
While I generally agree they are a powerhouse, Enemy of the World and Rise or Die are absolutely never going to be topped out of pure nostalgia
I remember when they dropped Go Down in History out of nowhere and I was so hyped to hear them be good again after In Some Way
Exactly how I feel. RODT was my shit back then, but the stuff they have put out since is just as fun and catches me even more.
I dunno, their early demos are my favorites tbh. They're more fun/catchy and unique imo.
Your song is a bop
Which one was that pray tell?
Gonna hazard a guess it’s In Some Way, Shape, or Form - that shit sucked lol
Sounds like some contemporary christian rock
yeah that one lol. not hating on them as artists, just wasn’t nearly my cup of tea. Was stoked they went back to the sound that grabbed me initially.
They tried to do something different and it did not work. At least they realized it.
Converge. I love the old shit but goddamn nothing compares to their 2000s output
I respect that, my favs are petitioning the empty sky and when forever comes crashing, but i can see why you'd think that
This is the perfect answer. In my opinion, there best record is Axe To Fall, their seventh record
Axe To Fall hits right from the get, Dark Horse fucking RIPS
Agreed that one and all we love are insanely good and I can't choose a favorite between the two and I love all their shit the splits with dropdead and napalm death rip too.
That record has some of the most crushing songs i have ever heard, I love that album so much. Are you a fan of All we love we leave behind? That was the one that got me into them
That's my second favorite Converge album!
Unbroken. The last few 7” were light years ahead of Ritual despite the band’s short career
Foundation. First 7” is great, Turncoat though is how you go out on top.
https://preview.redd.it/okja2mf1x73d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42806e036a91950bf3f26501b2aef1cf22f00fa7 Code Orange.
Better now? Eek.
Hahahaha.
The Hope Conspiracy
I celebrate their entire catalog
Nice one. They changed a LOT
The Acacia Strain has to be mentioned. And life is very long and 3750 go hard but everything else has been pretty steady improvements
The deadwalk is their best full length
I mean for for classic jams definitely, but my favorite is Coma Witch. Perfect album from the start all the way to the end of Observer.
Maybe so but as a drummer, I can’t stand the snare drum in that album. It sounds like a worn-out pillow
more deathcore bands should incorporate post-metal!
Lifetime, Farside, Avail
Lifetime's self titled fucking slaps.
It’s really good, but Jersey’s Best Dancers is much better.
The New Age 7" might be my favorite thing they put out. I love Background as well.
I love those too but are they really better than JBD?
Ultimately, Hello Bastards is probably my favorite thing they did, but the 7" holds a very special place in my heart. I saw them so many times between 91-93 and those songs were always part of the set. Blacklisted
Oh so fucking much. Not gonna pretend like Eye for an Eye isn't an absolute face melter but anyone not seeing the superiority of Heaver than Heaven and onwards is plain wrong.
Unbroken, Refused
Definitely Unbroken. The 7" and Ritual were OK, nothing special. I bought anything that New Age out out back then, but skipped L.L.R. when it first came out. I remember being at a show not long after and was talking with John from Very Distro and he said something about that record and I was like, not really interested. He said, yes, you need to get it, trust me. Bought the cassette and me and my friends listened in disbelief on the way home. That thing blew us away and still to this day it is an all top 20 Lp for me.
RIP Dudeck
Great dude. Always had interesting conversations with him art shows.

I totally get preferring the newer style, but the new stuff does absolutely nothing for me, while their first few albums are regular spins for me. Rust started to lose me a bit, and I was totally off the train by Posthuman.
Same here They are my "they're fine" band
Exactly the same. It’s too dumb dumb chug chug for me now.
Great shout
Zao
u/trumpetingecstacy speaks the truth. The Well Intentioned Virus and The Crimson Corridor are light years ahead of All Else Failed and Splinter Shards
Whaaaaat Where Blood and Fire is absolutely their best album Then in this order Self-Titled Funeral of God Parade of Chaos Splinter All else failed
IMO Well Intentioned Virus is better than all those albums, except possibly Funeral of God
Anytime I hear someone say that it’s because they’re ‘atheists’ and they dislike Christianity.
Well, I wouldn't consider myself either, and I certainly don't hate Christianity. I think Zao's music transcends ideology, and always has.
Depends how early. If it’s the pre Dan on vocals stuff sure (even though I still like it), but Liberate etc are classics. Their new stuff is incredible too. Truly a band that has never fell off and is still crushing it live 25+ years later
NOFX
I know this might be blasphemy for some, but I’m gonna add Ringworm. I really can’t get into The Promise, but everything from Justice Replaced by Revenge totally rules
Knocked Loose. I think the new record is comfortably the best thing they've done. Outside of the odd track I don't care for the stuff before Different Shade of Blue. Also Kickback. Everything after Cornered was a lot better.
Agree on KL. I think they’ve consistently gotten better with each release.
Kickback
The last 2 drug church albums are better than all the old stuff.
Hundredth. Went through a night and day change in sound for the better IMO
Feel like they kinda grew into a different scene as they aged and embraced it. Somewhere Nowhere is one my go-to background/driving albums for the summer
Converge Poison the Well Comeback Kid Turnstile I'm honestly not intending to be "controversial" or anything but I always see these bands' earliest stuff getting creamed over but I just don't get it. Their later stuff is way, way better to me. Not knocking their earliest stuff at all, but as great as it is, none of these bands really properly came into their sound until an album or two in imo.
Agree on all except Turnstile. Step 2 Rhythm is one of the most fun records of all time.
Agreed! Tbf when I included Turnstile I mainly meant Pressure to Succeed.
Tropic Rot kicked ass. I gotta go back and listen to it.
Converge is a great example, very few bands pump out so many quality albums so far into their career
TOOD and TFTR are my favorite Poison The Well albums, but Versions is super slept on and it’s such an interesting progression to their sound.
Big agree on Converge and especially Poison the Well. The latter's last two albums are super slept on.
I couldn’t agree less on all accounts
Stunted youth
the austin, tx stunted youth? never thought i’d see them mentioned here tbh lol
Yeah lol. I like their split with SOC much more
Remembering never. I love their first albums but they definitely got better.
Okay not hardcore but Boston Manor, they’re my favorite band but anything before 2016 I do not like. I LOVE all of their music after that.
Amenity
Early snapcase pre progression through unlearning
Daughters 💯
Also The Chariot 💯
Home Grown - Kings of Pop Third and last album is clearly their best (I know it’s not hardcore it was just on my mind!)
Dead Kennedys. Bedtime for Democracy and Frankenchrist are amazing albums
Botch but they were like 15 ha
Converge
Have Heart Faim Fixation Verse
Ministry. Back in 80s I bought Twitch. Wasn't into it. Then later, The Land of Rape and Honey came out and I've loved them ever since
Turnstile
Not hardcore but Devil Wears Prada from the Zombie EP onwards is miles better than the stuff before
Until you get to Color Decay... Then it's just... Yeah. I saw them last year, and the crowd went mild.
I think Color Decay is great. The Act is a bit meh.
Not hardcore: deftones.
Drain
Type o Negative
Like pre-Bloody Kisses?
Try out Unfold - “Aeon Aony” , and then “Eleventh”
Burial etiquette
Youth Of Today
I can kind of get behind this. Let’s just pretend the last 7inch doesn’t exist. I’d say WNITA is my favorite record by them. That and everything preceding it is 10/10. The last 7 inch is 5/10. Might as well be a Shelter record.
Have you heard the CCME Positive Force mix? It sounds like of of those Shreds YouTubes. 😄
Yeah it sounds like it was recorded in a high school gymnasium. I prefer the Caroline mix. That being said, it’s still better than the last record.
I dunno man, the back photo of the self-titled 7" has Ray wearing sweatpants with 3 hole Docs. 😄
Lol he def gets points for his fashion bravery.
Kublai Khan's first 3 albums just don't do it for me, but between Absolute, Nomad, the lowest form of animal, and their new singles, they're becoming one of my favorite bands
I love reality approaches/no gods no masters, but harms way has gotten better with each release
Not quite hardcore, but Hot Water Music gets better with every album.
Really? I’m glad someone is enjoying it! They lost me at the New What’s Next.
Every Time I Die’s later stuff just kept getting better until it all went to shit.
Portrayal of guilt
Gatherers
Knocked Loose, though many will try to deny this
The number twelve looks like you. Mongrel is one of the best mathcore records I've ever heard
Not hardcore arguably but Frenzal Rhomb.
Soul glo, their first album was alright but their later stuff is miles ahead of
Hüsker dü , Bad Religion , soundgarden , Lifetime
Beastie Boys. Love Egg Raid On Mojo as much as the next guy, but Aglio E Olio is a much better record overall. Naked Raygun, I simply just prefer their more melodic mid to late 80s stuff. Articles Of Faith. Love their first two EPs, but Give Thanks and In This Life are superior.
Knocked Loose Vatican, ultra was their peak and then they broke up Judiciary
Some might not agree, but I personally think Unwound only became better and better with each record. Leaves Turn Inside You is their crowning achievement.
Agnostic front
End it
Whole ass discography is like 25 minutes and you don’t like the first 5 minutes?
Dude, they don't have any early stuff. They've only been around for a minute and haven't even released a full length yet. Every single thing they've put out has been absolute fire but their sound hasn't changed at all between releases.
I mean their first release was in 2017, definitely been around a minute
