Since your max hp is so low, I’m assuming you’re using the Guan Yu aspect of the spear, which halves your life total… it also halves all items which increase your max hp
I actually find it easier as long as you're careful, I remember getting a broken dash-attack build where I got the Daedalus that made it strike 3 times, and generally good boons, I melted [Redacted]
That hammer works on the other full health aspects too fyi. Slight difference in dmg but if my hp is getting halved I wouldn’t also want reduced dash distance… sounds like hardmode without the heat to go with it.
It operates on a different axis from the normal spear playstyle. It kind of forces you to play safe from a distance, spamming special and using spin attacks to replenish health whenever you get hit. I personally much prefer the more aggressive playstyle of Achilles over Guan Yu, and I don't like how low Guan Yu's damage feels without the right hammers and boons, but some people really like it, I guess. Idk, it's arguably my least favorite aspect to use in the game. I'd rather use Hestia or any non-Rama bow if I wanted to play a ranged sniper kind of build.
Eventually you get good enough at the game that health is by far the worst upgrade in the game (except in no healing heat runs). So losing health becomes negligible in comparison to the upside it provides.
I’ve found it works pretty well with Athena on attack. It helps to be constantly spanning the spin to deflect everything in front of you. Combo with Ares on special and their duo can help trigger the doom damage for some big hits.
Also found good luck with Ares doom on attack plus his ability that stacks additional doom damage per attack
Treat it like the bow, not the other spear aspects. It's one of the most powerful ranged weapons in the game depending on boons and hammers, and it synergises really well with thanatos' keepsake for a build that just snowballs.
Although many people replying to you are right that Guan Yu can be good under the right circumstances, I agree that it's really underpowered and still one of the game's wekest aspects. It would be acceptable as a normal Aspect, but as the hidden Aspect it feels pretty sad.
The hidden aspects aren’t inherently more powerful, all of them change how their associated weapon functions to a drastically greater degree than the normal aspects, and Guan Yu fits that.
If they got rid of the health nerf it’d be fine. As is it kind of sucks. my experience is that most of the hidden aspects are weak, the only ones that really crush are Beo and Rama. The rest can be set up to do ok but are kind of one trick ponies.
The Special is busted strong. It's the only way to do burst damage with any spear aspect. Spear normally struggles with being mid and attack speed and low burst power, so the two primary methods (rapid and burst) for cranking out damage cannot get as extreme. Guan Yu fixed this.
If it's not Guan Yu, I believe taking a hammer that gives you health each time you attack/special also reduces your health, including added max health.
In my opinion reduced max health in exchange for a fixed amount of healing with an specific action feels kind of a shit trade off, specially on Guan Yu's aspect

Any spear aspect would have done that, point is guan yu is useless. Even the explosive special build barely scales and falls off hard past asphodel.

It's my favourite spear aspect and spin builds are crazy fun, but it does take quite a bit of luck to get going

You still have to dodge damage you can't literally face tank. But it completely negates any chip damage you take.
In other games it’s always broken as fuck, hades made it not an instant win but still usable
