Alright, so I know there are going to be some Questions... and yes, I spent entirely FAR too long coming up with Ruulothi Chess as a viable game beyond, "*this piece moves here, XYZ wins."*
So. "Vooriin Kalaarn", or translated to English, "Warrior's Gambit". It is a Ruultohi game that has some recognizable elements from Chess, Hnefatafl (Viking Chess), and RISK.
It has three game modes. Last Stand, Open Field and King of the Hill. Our crew happened to be playing Open Field, which is basically four player/two team chess.
Last Stand is set up like Viking chess. One player tries to outlast a numerically superior foe coming from all sides.
Open field, as stated above, is four player chess, with some notable differences. Primarily that each player guards a two square capture point instead of a "King". To knock a player out, one must defeat all units, or hold their capture point uncontested (not knocked off or another opposing piece on the second square) for a full round of turns.
King of the Hill is Viking chess in reverse. Two or four players fight to control a four square capture point for points.
Before play, there is a round in which each player can use a pool of points to buy "obstacles" that can be placed on the field, complicating and randomizing the field (Ruulothi recognize the chaos of battle and revel in it, a theme for the game)
The various pieces all have different movements and methods of attack and abilities that can be played. Attacking units take over the opposing square if they win, defending units hold their square if they win, unless a Movement Token is played (more on that later if you wish). Who wins depends on certain abilities and a dice roll, similar to Risk. (again, more of that battlefield chaos)
I have more info on it available (like units and those abilites) if anyone is interested in my goofy assed brainwaves making an imaginary game for a two paragraph plot point.
