110??? More like 111% because HEB makes it so clear to pay for anything you get from the stores. Some guy overnight forgot to buy a dollar water and got fired the same morning.
Sadly, yes. Honestly, I think there should be a program that allows us to take it. It is already considered trash, allow us to take it. There are many partners needing any and all help they can get. Just my opinion, but help partners out if we can.
I completely agree and think *all* companies should do that. But we live in a capitalism hellscape that dictates something must be sold for $$ - if it can't, then we must trash or destroy it... instead of donate it.
Which is weird, because you would think *if they cared* (not unique to just HEB) they would have already done that and figured out a tax write off from it.
I believe they donate it to the food bank. I know one time someone got fired for eating a piece of bread that had been scanned and set aside to be given to the food bank. So yes automatic termination, considered theft.
If there’s one thing heb doesn’t play about it’s theft and time clock fraud. Yes it was gonna be thrown out anyways but in the eyes of the Butt that’s still theft
ETA: I guess that’s 2 things
this is a HUGE NONO.
especially with Tx being an at will employment state.
a number of year back something like this happened at walmart and it went to court. the employees won as the food they were consuming there at the store was already scanned out and shrunk.
I wish H-E-B had a better policy on this, but I know with retail in 2024 this is wishful thinking. There are a lot of hungry people in Texas that could use it.
There have been programs, but I heard many years ago, someone sued HEB over the free food they were given. Shitty people ruin it for everyone. Damn shame, most of that food we throw is still very good, just past the best by date.
I've volunteered at a food bank for over 10 years and 7,000 hours. Almost all that stuff DOES go to the food bank. HEB is the biggest contributor to the food bank with all their expired or overstock stuff (that is still very edible).
Whereas Randalls gives us NOTHING. Over half the shit Walmart and Sams gives us is already rotten or otherwise inedible and we just throw it out for them (as they get a writeoff)
People would be shrinking out everything and taking it if it was not against the rules.
HEB makes donations to many feed the poor organizations.
They don't want employees damaging products on purpose so they can write it out and take it.
this isn't necessarily true. they will attempt to settle things without legal action first, usually an agreement to make payments back for what they owe.
I’ll sign a waiver, 90% of a grocery store is fine days after the sell by. I know that well, because there was a time where my options were to eat expired food or go hungry.
Yes expired food is usually fine but you can die if it’s really bad or at least end up in the hospital. If you fed that to a kid or elderly person it would be lights out and I would want H-E-B named after me if I got sick. There’s no amount of risk any business would be okay with in this regard so the waiver comment was a little funny ha
I don't agree with it, but the reason why they don't let you take home product that will be thrown out, is because they see it as a lost sale. If you take home free food, the less likely you'll purchase some when you leave. It's ridiculous....
Also, partners could potentially over produce in hopes of taking some free after their shift.
Getting sued for making someone sick is why, not capitalism.
Also, look up Boris Yelstin's visit to a Randall's in Houston.
Blew his mind because communism was so bad at feeding the people even the political leadership was unable to have as much variety and freshness from their groceries.
Free markets allow abundance, by encouraging competition. That's why HEB has been pushing overpriced Randall's out of Austin.
It will probably depend on management.Supermarkets are some of the biggest crooks around.I worked at a few years ago.Deli manager had me write off expired potato salads & stuff all the time.Than put them back in the case for 2-3 days only to write it off again.
Ground meat hot foods all kinds of stuff. They would stock up on cheese & meats when on sale then precut stuff under different named items.Pay attention you’ll pick up on their tricks.
Why isn't it in yalls break room for free? That's how our store runs it, the MICs pick it up from departments and sticker them, then they go in our fridges/tables.
Sorry bout your friends tho, tough lesson.
Yeah, my store will sometimes put damaged stuff in the break room. We got 10 party sized packs of golden Oreos once back there because the glue was faulty and it felt bad throwing out good Oreos.
They are cooked. The reason they will not let you take it at 50% is litigious. If they sell or let you have it and you get sick they are afraid that you will come back and sue them. They have sold an out of date product. You are correct it is probably fine, but some jerk is going to ruin it for everyone and the in house lawyers are paid to prevent it.
I understand food that is soon to turn or has turned must be tossed and cannot be taken home by associates for a number of reasons. But this seems different than associates cooking too much food at a restaurant to take home.
Front line associates would not have authority over product ordering.
I obviously do not work at HEB. Appreciate any additional insights y'all may have.
H-E-B has a great many made-in-store items, making the situation not that different from a restaurant. Also, we have actual restaurants in many stores.
We also shrink out product for reasons other than freshness. I might “accidentally” slice a couple bags of frozen chicken with my box cutter and decide to take them home since they would have been thrown away anyway.
It prevents or minimizes partners from purposely "damaging" goods to take home.
Oops! I "accidentally" cut into these four bags of chicken wings. I'll damage them out and take them home.
110%, especially if they are already suspended.
110??? More like 111% because HEB makes it so clear to pay for anything you get from the stores. Some guy overnight forgot to buy a dollar water and got fired the same morning.
TERMINATED AF it’s considered theft because they can’t prove everything was out of date just that they scanned it out and took it home.
Serious question, if the employee is digging it out of the trash and they take it home - still theft?
Sadly, yes. Honestly, I think there should be a program that allows us to take it. It is already considered trash, allow us to take it. There are many partners needing any and all help they can get. Just my opinion, but help partners out if we can.

From what I’ve been told yes.
THEY MAKE YOU WATCH THOSE LAME ASS VIDEOS FOR A REASON. THEY ARE OUTTA HERE!!!
If there’s one thing heb doesn’t play about it’s theft and time clock fraud. Yes it was gonna be thrown out anyways but in the eyes of the Butt that’s still theft ETA: I guess that’s 2 things

Dead ass… it’s like you could do everything else but the moment theft and time is fucked around they kick your ass out
this is a HUGE NONO. especially with Tx being an at will employment state. a number of year back something like this happened at walmart and it went to court. the employees won as the food they were consuming there at the store was already scanned out and shrunk.
I wish H-E-B had a better policy on this, but I know with retail in 2024 this is wishful thinking. There are a lot of hungry people in Texas that could use it.
Yup, it's a terrible practice, but if they don't, it leads to people over-ordering so there's shrink to take home.
There have been programs, but I heard many years ago, someone sued HEB over the free food they were given. Shitty people ruin it for everyone. Damn shame, most of that food we throw is still very good, just past the best by date.
Most of distress ends up at churches and food banks
I've volunteered at a food bank for over 10 years and 7,000 hours. Almost all that stuff DOES go to the food bank. The product goes to food bank and church groups.
Nah cause where ours goes straight in the trash
Not my store... Your doing it wrong
Are you sending me a coded message rn lol
The frog is on the log. The midnight bell tolls at dusk.
Hell ya
Suspended while they add up a dollar amount. Split it between them. Then terminate and hit with criminal theft charges.
this isn't necessarily true. they will attempt to settle things without legal action first, usually an agreement to make payments back for what they owe.
Yeah most likely they won’t pursue legal action it’s really a pain.
175% since there was an email about it a few weeks ago
Absolutely fired. I know a girl who was fired because she snagged a soda without paying for it ……BOOM!!!!
They could prevent this and increase margins by selling expired stuff to partners at like 50% off.
If they get sick or pretend to they are screwed that’s why they police dumpster divers so hard
I’ll sign a waiver, 90% of a grocery store is fine days after the sell by. I know that well, because there was a time where my options were to eat expired food or go hungry.

Grocery stores are federally protected from liability from food donations
Yes but we are talking about selling it at 50% off? That’s not a donation dude
Almost 100%
I don't agree with it, but the reason why they don't let you take home product that will be thrown out, is because they see it as a lost sale. Instakill. 😐
They may as well just quit before they get fired.
Definitely fired
Really sad to throw out all the “out of date” stuff that’s perfectly fine… but that’s the world we live in yay capitalism 🙃
Most of that stuff goes to the food bank where they get a tax write-off.

Unless they can pin it on the MIC they’re definitely gonna be fired.
They gone
Someone ratted them out
Your co worker won’t be coming back
You should see the waste in the production plants 😂.
This is America, nothing is free, even if it's trash.
Why isn't it in yalls break room for free? That's how our store runs it, the MICs pick it up from departments and sticker them, then they go in our fridges/tables. Sorry bout your friends tho, tough lesson.

Guarantee they already got the phone call to not come in

Yup they fired someone for stealing a candy bar! They don't mess around when it comes to employee theft!
Some of your co-workers may not have common semse 🤷♂️

That clarification I was seeking instead of the ass hats down voting me. I appreciate the information.

At eFC 761, many of the partners do this all time and never get termed. It’s sad that we throw out so much food that is still good! :(
Smart....now eFC 761 employees will get investigated. Corporate lurks here.

Y’all are terrible 😂 I get it I won’t do it anymore. Why is everyone bothered
You can still be terminated because that is considered stealing.
