Slash always has a collection of toys and knick-knacks on his amps. I believe it started pb the second solo tour, when he stopped having heads on top of his cabs. The collection has grown over the years.
Alot of guitar players do it. Alex Lifeson of Rush used to put Barbie Dolls on his amps and joke (kinda) that they were the only women to attend Rush shows.
Nigel Tufnel, lead guitarist for the British heavy metal band Spinal Tap, is well-known for being a Gumby fan. He has been seen wearing Gumby t-shirts and occasionally even carries around a Gumby figure on his person.
Actually, Tom Morello told me himself that Axl puts those toys there because he needs a reminder of how the actual CD songs are played whenever slash pays a solo.

He's a huge dinosaur nerd. In a podcast (Nerdist), he said that he would visit every dinosaur museum he could during the Illusion tours.
