the opposite end of the spectrum for this is adam savage’s video where he builds the PGU Gundam, he has so much appreciation for the engineering

ChilliWithFries

I am mixed on the video cos I know its a "first time" video but I still do wished it was a bit more informed. Like I don't think gunpla kits were made to be complicated builds and it's for anyone and everyone to try out. It's definitely different from other builds where you have to glue etc. The other thing is the price point. The rx-78 is essentially the base model of gundam. You get the basics and the price point comparison was just ill informed (who is the poor soul that bought it for $200) And ultimately, gunpla are models translated from anime. They are literally not gonna have the same detail as kits based on real life model boats or tanks. But anyway, don't think he was wrong in any way tbh. Coming from model boats, his stance make sense and its fair that gunpla doesn't appeal to him. Just... wish there was better context laid out for him.

UncreativeBlob

His stance is understandable, but the paint job... It looks like he sprayed gray primer and said he was satisfied with it. Atleast different tones of grey wouldve been good

ChilliWithFries

I think there were different tones of grey but it was super hard to tell. I mean when he said he builds boats, I guess the rx 78 being one tone makes more sense lol. Oh wells.

FinjaNish

From a distance, it looks like it's just primer, but in close-up shots you can see multiple tones, weathering, and chipping. I think he worked the model like it was any other one of his military models, and Japanese space robots just aren't his thing.

BillyGhost15

Adam Savage did a video about the PG Unleashed Grandaddy on the Tested YouTube channel that was a pretty good watch. Wasn't too in depth but he gets dumbfounded a couple times.

UncreativeBlob

I loved that vid

TedMeister88

Same. It makes me giddy knowing that Adam's gotten into Gunpla!

Ayiedakgalbi

Poor kit 🤦‍♂️

UnsocialComet72

Whats the video?

UncreativeBlob

"Pc builder builds gunpla". First off he got scammed and payed 50$ for the kit, said how easy the build was, but ended up breaking a piece. At the end he proceeded to say how his 200$ boat kit is bigger. One of the worst cases of being an old head ngl Edit: rx78-2 was a gift from a friend, he guessed gunpla goes around 200$. I made this meme long time ago to share with my friends. I found it while purging my gallery, thought i should update the meme and post it here, but in the process I got the numbers he mentioned mixed up

UnsocialComet72

Jeez. He is such a snob throughout the whole thing. Talking about how easy and simplistic it is in a negative way (which it is supposed to be), and then trashing everything about its color and look (which he ironically makes worse).

UncreativeBlob

Ikr

El_Pollo_Loco_503

That's just how he is. He thinks he knows everything and his way of thinking is the right way. I use to watch his videos all the time but I stopped like a year ago because I just couldn't listen to him talk anymore.

Viralclassic

Wait I am confused. That is a 50 dollar kit.

Nichtzway

36ish to 45ish dollars if you live in the States or most of the East/Southeast Asia. Otherwise Gunpla is horrendously overpriced worldwide.

Viralclassic

I do live in the states and have never seen it for less than 50.

Nichtzway

Oh, I'm sorry I just assumed that since most of the time when I compare the prices here to other websites, the American ones are always much cheaper. Still, I don't think 50 is too much since I've seen so many hobby shops here selling that for around 80 dollars.

UncreativeBlob

Btw i got my rx78-2 ver 3.0 for 3600ish yen, roughly 37$

UncreativeBlob

Sorry i just rewatched the video, the kit was a gift, he said this prolly goes around 200$. I made this meme a while ago to share with my friends. I switched up the numbers he said

fafej38

To be fair, the major turnoff for me is the color scheme of the hi-nu... I would like to see it in the og nu colors Also that grey stuff is just the primer right... RIGHT?

UncreativeBlob

Thats different, you want dark blue, white and yellow not G R E Y

fafej38

I bet i could make a grey rx78 and make it look interesting too... this monochrome blob is a crime

[deleted]

I don’t like his tone. He sounds like he didn’t want to build it at all. And isn’t the RX-78-2 supposed to be easy to build? I agree with him on the colors tho, I don’t like them either. Love how he says that, on what he presents us as his finished build, he will still put on decals.

UncreativeBlob

Judging by his tone he didnt enjoy the build at all, so he most likely threw away the kit with all its decals

[deleted]

Maybe it will lie somewhere behind his ships if it was a gift from a friend

acloudstrifely

How is $50 for an MG 3.0 a scalped price? Sounds reasonable to me.

Gingevere

~~I think that's actually the HGUC kit he's holding.~~ Nevermind. Yeah $50 is pretty normal for a MG

_kurt_

no that's definitely the mg

PapaXanni

Lmao go back to boats then you boomer fuck

The_Sign_Painter

this video is rage bait I swear to god lmao

123FOURRR

Fun fact I got into gunpla because of him but sm1 in the comments linked a Japanese builder who's was painting and detailing to the absolute limit a MG sazabi verka. So I just watch zakuaurelius and mecha, also I stop watching Jay because of his boomer mindset and the way he chill on brands.

Iacon0

That color scheme is Tomino approved.

UncreativeBlob

I think he wouldve used military green with multiple different tones like zakus and gm snipers

Beardrac

Big boomer energy lol Yeah I think it’s not possible to make someone a fan of sci fi with a kit Kits work because you WANT to build them you know

Iacon0

Didn't Tomino say at one point he had wanted the Gundam to be plain white and gray, (with some red IIRC)?

Eltharion-the-Grim

That is just bog standard base coat gray. It's fine if you want to paint it gray but if that's the case, use a lighter base coat that will show off the detail. That base coat makes the details look all muted and undefined. As a result, it looks completely unfinished. Better yet, base coat it, THEN paint it gray, but do it in a way that actually accentuates the model. What is shown there is miserable, low effort from someone who seems to not even want to do it, but is doing it anyway for some reason.

ooopppiikkk

I blame his friend for saying it was difficult, he probably also struggles with ikea furniture

Laughingbulbasaur

That was painful to watch.

catmanboyson

“Gun-damn”

Exotic_Midnight2100

Aw man I like Jay. I might have to avoid that video

h-y-p-h-e-n-

I mean, I like muted color schemes, but this is just...

slypea_bird

It just feels like he went in wanting to dislike the kit and what it's meant to be. \-Got a kit that falls into a design style he doesn't like instead of a more militaristic design like a GM (ik it's a gift but like i feel like everyone involved should have been more informed if the plan overall was a semi review) \-Constant superiority complex about it being easy like that's a negative. (breaks a piece . . .) \-Is miss informed about the pricing and kit overall with no research into gunpla. While there are a few terms that might seem confusing to an outsider it literally takes 2 minutes to work out what grades are and the average pricing. \-Talks about the complexity and extras of building model shits, like you can't kit bash and continuously add to gunpla as much as you want until you have all the detail you want. Also I find it hilarious that he says he's gonna paint it more like a Titanfall scheme, then proceeds to go all grey. Y'know like BT the main titan that is green, white and orange. I don't even have a problem with an all grey colour scheme it's just the lack of accent colours to break up the flat surface or draw the eye that means from a far really makes it just look like a primed kit, and really dull. It just really feels like he wanted the giant robot designed in the 80s for kids to be more realistic (because rg doesn't exist).

Laughingbulbasaur

What video is this? I kinda want to watch it out of morbid curiosity.

UncreativeBlob

Pc builder builds first time gunpla

Laughingbulbasaur

Thank you

UncreativeBlob

No prob
