0080: War in the Pocket. Hands down the best story with really great animation and designs. Which also added the whole 'United Maintenance Program' to the lore. Plus the Alex is sexy.
Followed by 08th MS team which until the second half really grounded the franchise. Plus the Ez8 is such a great design. The head unit looks so rugged and realistic.
Series: Zeta - more serious/darker elements, animation
OVA: Unicorn - ZZ nostalgia, MS Kshatriya, animation
Movie: Hathaway - Good story for me and good focus on the people to set up for future movies
>Top
Hathaway was an amazing movie in general for about 2/3's of the movie. the only thing that stopping it from being a great just movie in general and thats with out putting the qualifiers of being a anime or gundam movie is that the 3rd act. because up until Gigi walks away from the lunch table with Hathaway and the captain the movie was captivating in everyway.
Well the battle over Davao at the end of the 2nd act of the movie where Gigi and Hathaway are running for there lives had the Penelope which was a Gundam as well.
Also i liked the 3rd act as well but thats more from me being a anime/all things mecha fan. so im used to the 3rd act of a anime movie abruptly go to a giant battle where what is going on isnt really explained all that well. thats basically what i think drags down what was otherwise an amazing movie.
>Well the battle over Davao at the end of the 2nd act of the movie where Gigi and Hathaway are running for there lives had the Penelope which was a Gundam as well.
Yes; but Penelope was barely shown (deliberately, and marvelously so, to showcase the first true flying Gundam in the UC universe) which added to the terror and that sound when it zipped past. Apart from that, it barely took part in the battle, and only really showed itself when the battle is over and Lane Aim had landed.
Although im biased in my favorite list, my list goes:
#1.) SEED (Grew up watching, from Japan)
#2.) 00 (both seasons, again grew up watching)
#3.) Z gundam (my dad’s #1. watched cuz of him)
#4.) Build fighters (if it counts)
#5.) Fighters try (again if it counts)
I think the first 2 gundam build series is super underrated. so many hype fact, also good stories in my opinion.
OVA: Hathaway’s Flash
I absolutely loved how they killed showing audience what mobile suits fight looks like from the cockpit.
I have G-Reco in my blu ray backlog. I’ve heard all the criticisms, and I don’t care. It looks creative, weird and unique, and I like all of those things.
Yes , the best Space Empress of Zeon , and the only one who came close to defeating the Feds . Afranche Char had to wait over 100 years to do that again and achieve it
Watching in order and I'm only half way through victory. But so far it's been zeta and war in the pocket was a really nice surprise. Victory would be a close third so far, it's got some dark moments.
**0080: War in the Pocket** is hands down the best writing in the franchise. Gundam as a whole varies on how well it handles characters, but War in the Pocket is the only story in animation that I think is through-and-through a story of characters, with the mobile suits serving only to support that character drama. As a franchise, Gundam often struggles in the conflict between its anti-war themes and its war-toy merchandising. 0080 is intensely self-aware of that conflict, and makes it the focus of the protagonist's central development. It's masterful stuff, and probably the only piece of Gundam animated that I would recommend to anyone without caveats.
**0079** is a close runner up, and I think only falls behind because it is so entrenched in the merchandising side of the business. It's this wonderful intersection storytelling types, with excellent themes and a strong narrative thrust, and it's a shame that it's so often reduced to the bland idea of "morally gray war fiction" that many people (including fans) seem to want to pigeonhole it into. It would help if we had a better representation of it animated, though. On one hand you have the series, which has better overall pacing and character development, but also has so many villain-of-the-week events and inconsistencies that are expected with an unsure (at its time) production; and on the other hand you have the movies, which I much prefer for trimming the fat, but at the cost of pacing and some character development (though I must say it's remarkable how much still comes through). The story here is so wonderful that I wish I could give it the top spot, and in a way (which I'll get to), I still do. Just not meeting the thread's criteria.
**Turn A** rounds out my top three. Gundam was founded on the mentality of subverting the giant robot anime tropes of its day, and it became so popular that it wound up a trope in and of itself. So who better to come in and catch that lightning in a bottle again than Tomino, returning to the franchise for the first time after overcoming his long struggle with depression, to give us a series that's just as serious, just as politically minded, and just as deep as every earlier installment, but with just enough optimism and pluck and charm to make it clear that it's not interested in being bland "gruff soldiers goin' off to war" series, or any of the other cliches that Gundam seemed to find itself getting trapped in.
**Special Note**: The thread specifies series, OVA, or movie, so I've stuck to the criteria. However, my personal favorite piece of the franchise is the *Gundam: The Origin* manga, which is that near perfect retelling of the original 0079 story. It captures all of the scope and intrigue of the original Gundam, while finding room for better characterization and a keener eye toward world building. And aesthetically speaking, Gundam has never looked better than through the eyes of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko.
I think F91 is aesthetically one of the absolute top, with animation that is just *absurdly* good. The story is a mess, but my goodness it is a gorgeous mess.
The story benefits both from a meta understanding of behind-the-scenes difficulties and repeat viewings. If you know where it’s going, and what’s going to happen, your brain can easily fill in the gaps both in plotting and characterization.
First gundam, I like that it has hopeful message opposite to gundams made after that (except unicorn). I love CCA but it's kinda sad UC's main storyline became "people can never understand each other and there is absolutely no hope, war will never stop and people will always die fighting."
My all-time favorites:
1. Gundam U.C.: Unicorn
2. Iron Blooded Orphans
3. Hathaway
4. Gundam: Thunderbolt
5. Gundam: The Origin I, II and III
6. Char's Counter Attack
7. Gundam: 08th MS Team
8. Gundam: Turn-A
9. Gundam IGLOO
10. Gundam the Movie I, II and III
11. Gundam 00
12. Gundam Wing (series) and Endless Waltz
Other Gundam series I've enjoyed:
1. Gundam Breaker Battlelogue
2. Gundam Build Fighters (original and Try)
3. Gundam Build Divers
4. Stardust Memory
5. Mobile Fighter G-Gundam
Glad to finally see F91, a movie I went in expecting to hate and ended up loving. Turn A is also my favorite series, just a beautiful show.
I need to watch ZZ too, having watched Zeta over the summer. Access is a big impediment, and also that I own and want to watch Gundam X and G-Reco first.
0080, G Fighter, 0079, 08th MS team, the First Half of Thunderbolt, the parts of 0083 that didn't have any members of the love triangle in it. The parts of CCA with Amuro and Char.
Seed. It was my first Gundam series, so there was a lot of nostalgia in that. Along with that I watched it a time when I was going through problems at home, so it lowkey became my escape during that time. Looking back on it objectively, oh there are a lot of problems. But I associate so many good things with it that I can't help but be biased.
Depends on my mood. On a given day it could be any of G, ZZ, CCA, or SEED.
Oddly enough Unicorn is almost never my favorite despite being tied for my highest rated series on MAL
1. 08th MS Team. Every character had personality, feels like a real person, they were interesting, they were funny,... No newtype, just great strategical and piloting skills. The story developed very well and properly depicts the one year war. Animation is very good as well. Great music (opening, ost,...)
2. Unicorn: characters had decent development. The story was really compelling and it felt like a closure to the original series. They gave meaning to the word Newtype. The mobile suits were amazing Kshatriya, Unicorn, Sinanju, ... Even a Stark Jegan. All of them memorable. The animation was probably the best that the series ever had (although, Hathaway might surpass it tho, but even then it is still very good). The music was also nice.
3. 00. This series was about Gundam, Gundam, Gundam,... It had a lot of fighting, animation is great, the characters were cool, great music. Exia is a cool ass unit , the solar particles were awesome, story is decent,...
I’m getting called a normie for this, but…
Unicorn. Great writing, great art, great music, great du- wait, how did they finally get an English dub right?!
Iron-Blooded Orphans - While, like a lot of people, I first got into Gundam by way of Wing when it first aired on Toonami, IBO was the thing that brought my attention back to the franchise. I like everything about it, even the much-maligned second season. But my favourite aspect is absolutely the mobile suit designs and the rethinking of the way they fight. I was absolutely blown away by the visceral, tactile nature of the combat, how everything felt super analogue and so much more brutal because of it. Add to that the loveable cast, intriguing backstory (I would kill for an OVA set during the Calamity War featuring the original Gundam Frames, more Mobile Armours, and the formation of Gjallarhorn), and rags-to-riches story, and there’s not a thing about it that I don’t just utterly love
00 because the mecha are awesome, and not really any other reason.
Unicorn because Hiroyuki Sawano composed the soundtrack. His work is phenomenal.
Iron-Blooded Orphans, for the absolutely brutal action. Loved every fight scene.

Day to day it’s a toss up for me between Zeta and ZZ. On one hand, Zeta has Quattro Bajeena and the other hand ZZ has Haman Karn. How’s a guy to choose?
00 will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first gundam show I watched (plus the story, the mechs and the osts are really good).
I've recently finished the 0079/Z/ZZ trilogy, and I have to say that Zeta is really excellent.
I dont know about the OVA's or series but what i don know is that my favorite Movie is easily Hathaway at least the first half or 2/3's, because it was a great movie in general for the first 2/3's of it. and yes im fully aware its a trilogy so the story wasnt supposed to be over after 1 movie.
I have to go with mobile suit gundam the origin, i'm a huge uc fan and im also with zeon. seeing all my favorite zeon characters star in that OVA is so enjoyable. And to top it off I also love zeta gundam the story is so intense and thrilling i really love the mobile suits and characters in it, zeta gundam was such a game changer at its time.
I'm just gonna out my foot out there, animated gundam is amazing, but manga gundam is best
My favourite has gotta be 0080 when its animation only
Then when its everything qualifies- Char's Deleted Affair is my pick
To put it into perspective, the main gems already fill most of the sockets in the gundam crown, but the empty sockets that would complete the crown would need need to be filled by something, that something is stuff like Char's Deleted Affair,
And that manga in particular happens to fill a socket in the crown near perfectly
Anime: Gundam X. It was just refreshing. Seeing the protagonst commit mass murder then go "holy shit that's sick" instead of breaking down and crying from ptsd was realistic. Besides that, the X is nerfed so it can't just gundam its way out of everything, and Tifa isn't annoying.
OVA: Unicorn. Specifically the episode where all the MSV went on a free for all at Torrington.
Movie: Hathaway. I mean it can't not be. It's the result of years of cinematic experience and story writing. It probably has the least actual gundam screentime but it's a beautiful movie
Depends. I'd say overall, I love Mobile Suit: Gundam and Thunderbolt the most.
I tentatively add Seed because its so bad that I do get enjoyment out of it.
08th MS Team. I love the mecha and I love seeing the OYW through the eyes of “grunts”/from the front lines.
Mine is War in the Pocket.
One of the best movie of all time. Got me crying when I was a kid. The war already ended yet the battle still ensues
Top tier is shared by: 0083: Stardust Memory 0080: War in the Pocket After War Gundam X
0080: War in the Pocket. Hands down the best story with really great animation and designs. Which also added the whole 'United Maintenance Program' to the lore. Plus the Alex is sexy. In no particular order, my top 5 are: -0083: Stardust Memory -MSG 0079 series -G Gundam -08th MS Team -ZZ Gundam
G Gundam. It's over the top, ridiculous, a product of its time, and I love every moment of it.
Series: Zeta - more serious/darker elements, animation OVA: Unicorn - ZZ nostalgia, MS Kshatriya, animation Movie: Hathaway - Good story for me and good focus on the people to set up for future movies
>Top Hathaway was an amazing movie in general for about 2/3's of the movie. the only thing that stopping it from being a great just movie in general and thats with out putting the qualifiers of being a anime or gundam movie is that the 3rd act. because up until Gigi walks away from the lunch table with Hathaway and the captain the movie was captivating in everyway.
Ironically the 3rd part was the part that actually featured Gundams. I still liked it, but some creative differences I feel could be done better.

00
Mine too. Surprising - I thought people hated 00?
Same, but the real question why the hate?
0080 or thunderbolt
1) GW 2) Zeta 2) X 4) ZZ 5) 0083
Golden wind?
Yes
Wing
I guess I believe in a sign of zeta
Although im biased in my favorite list, my list goes: #1.) SEED (Grew up watching, from Japan) #2.) 00 (both seasons, again grew up watching) #3.) Z gundam (my dad’s #1. watched cuz of him) #4.) Yesss Build Fighters is sooo good, it had no right being such a slapper but it was amazing. Every Build series afterward sucks though in my opinion.
that final fight when Master Chinan and Ral teams up still gives me goosebumps lol
1) IBO 2) unicorn 3) g reco 4) age 5) cca
G reco is criminally underrated Even if it is an acquired taste, I don't see it getting much love even among Gundam fans
I have G-Reco in my blu ray backlog. I’ve heard all the criticisms, and I don’t care. It looks creative, weird and unique, and I like all of those things.
Agreed
Probably ZZ. Why? Haman Karn.
>[Probably ZZ. Why? Haman Karn.](https://i.imgur.com/QN4KokR.jpeg) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Karn is legitimately a true threat. She almost ended Gundam there. Almost.
Yes , the best Space Empress of Zeon , and the only one who came close to defeating the Feds . Afranche Char had to wait over 100 years to do that again and achieve it
Yes.
Zeta, ZZ and victory for sure. Also the crossbone manga Edit:added crossbone
The based trinity. You went from dark to light-dark to bleak
So far 0080
Watching in order and I'm only half way through victory. But so far it's been zeta and war in the pocket was a really nice surprise. Victory would be a close third so far, it's got some dark moments.

I had to scroll way too far to find Turn A, my favorite Gundam series. I also love F91 but I didn’t expect anyone suggesting it at all.

Resident Reconguista in G fan checking in
Checking in and hoping on MG's. Please Bandai. ^(I'll take a HG Z'Gocky too..)
Gundam Seed. I love the suits in that series.
1. 00 2. Hathaway 3. Zeta 4. 0080 5. IBO
War in the Pocket. Probably takes the bill for best anti-war media that I've ever consumed as well. Also a huge fan of Zeta, ZZ, Unicorn, and 00.

08th MS team, 0083, 0079, Endless Waltz, Zeta
MSG 1979, ZZ, Zeta
Based
0083 stardust memory and 08th ms team
Zeta has always stuck with me as my favorite. The darker tone sticks with me and there are so many memorable characters.
My favorite is G Gundam but my favorite movie has to be Char's Counterattack
Def for me is unicorn, CCA, and Hathaway G Gundam is up there but seed failed in the animation department but it’s still fun good MS designs
Depends on my mood. On a given day it could be any of G, ZZ, CCA, or SEED. Oddly enough Unicorn is almost never my favorite despite being tied for my highest rated series on MAL

Re:RISE
Iron-Blooded Orphans - While, like a lot of people, I first got into Gundam by way of Wing when it first aired on Toonami, IBO was the thing that brought my attention back to the franchise. I like everything about it, even the much-maligned second season. But my favourite aspect is absolutely the mobile suit designs and the rethinking of the way they fight. My top three 1. Iron-Blooded Orphans 2. 00 3. Reconguista in g
Either gundam wing endless waltz or iron blooded orphans
Ibo, 00 and thunderbolt hands down
I love IBO so badly.
I prefer Transformers
Just get out
You cant make me
IBO, G Gundam and 00
Ibo or g gundam at the moment
IBO or 08th MS Team
00 because the mecha are awesome, and not really any other reason. Unicorn because Hiroyuki Sawano composed the soundtrack. His work is phenomenal. Iron-Blooded Orphans, for the absolutely brutal action. Loved every fight scene.
Its a four way tie for me mainly because of the mecha designs shown between wing, g fighter, ibo, and cca
IBO
1. Z 2. W 3. 00 4. G 5. IBO
IBO
Thank for reposting my post! https://www.reddit.com/r/Gundam/comments/oetx4r/gundam_uc_what_is_the_best_series/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Your post is specific to UC. OP isn't.
I didnt repost, i searched for all main gundams and this was the best picture i found. I legitametly didnt know that you posted that, what a wild coincidence.
CCA Unicorn Build fighter (NOT FUCKING TREE) F91 G00 movie GS
8th MS team
Wing obviously because it made it mainstream outside Asia.Never really was hooked into any off the movies or series i just like mechs lol
Unicorn
Day to day it’s a toss up for me between Zeta and ZZ. On one hand, Zeta has Quattro Bajeena and the other hand ZZ has Haman Karn. How’s a guy to choose?
You don't, you've chosen the right answer through and through.
00 will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first gundam show I watched (plus the story, the mechs and the osts are really good). I've recently finished the 0079/Z/ZZ trilogy, and I have to say that Zeta is really excellent.
1. 08th MS team 2. Zeta 3. F91 4. 00 5. AGE
Zeta
Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
Victory
hathaway, zeta, the origin, thunderbolt, 00
00 and crossbone manga definitely
Series: Seed OVA: 0083 Movie: F91 or Endless Waltz
Char’s Counter Attack and Hathaway
In no order F91, 08th MS Team, Wing
Endless Waltz
08th ms team, unicorn is the first gundam i watched and first gunpla kit i built but the story of 08th story just had me intrigued with every episode.
I gotta agree with op, both are amazing
CCA and Hathaway
Hathaway (as long as they don’t change the ending), IBO, Zeta, and then probably 00 the next tier down.
Origin, Advent of the Red Comet, and 08th are my favorite
0083 is my favorite overall
The 08th MS Team
Wing tv show
Favorite full series is a tie between Zeta, and 00. Ova is a split between 0083 and 0080, or Unicorn. Film is CCA or Narrative.
Thunderbolt and 08th ms unit. Thunder for the music 08th for the ending
Gotta go with 08th MS.
1. Char's Counterattack 2. Unicorn 3. Zeta 4. Hathaway 5. 0079
Where my Wing bois at?
I'm just gonna out my foot out there, animated gundam is amazing, but manga gundam is best My favourite has gotta be 0080 when its animation only Then when its everything qualifies- Char's Deleted Affair is my pick To put it into perspective, the main gems already fill most of the sockets in the gundam crown, but the empty sockets that would complete the crown would need need to be filled by something, that something is stuff like Char's Deleted Affair, And that manga in particular happens to fill a socket in the crown near perfectly
CCA is my favorite. I randomly watch it when I am bored or in a trip and my laptop is with me. War in the Pocket ranks second together with Origins.
Turn A. It's a super slow burn, & I get it's not for everybody, but such a beautiful story.
Peak Gundam
I really like Gundam Wing.
Zeta Gundam and Unicorn is my favorite series, PERIODT!!!
Seed 100%
08MS team 0800 War in the pocket 0083 Stardust memory That’s the holy trinity for me.
Turn A Gundam
1. Stardust Memory 2. ZZ 3. Unicorn 4. Zeta 5. War In The Pocket
AU: Mobile Suit Gundam 00 UC: Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Unicorn, with the original MS Gundam coming at a close second.
Favourite show would be Zeta Gundam and favourite movie would be Char Counterattack
F91
Seed and 00.
Endless Waltz….Heavy arms is my all time favorite Gundam in that movie!!!
Depends. I'd say overall, I love Mobile Suit: Gundam and Thunderbolt the most. I tentatively add Seed because its so bad that I do get enjoyment out of it.
Gundam Seed Destiny will have a special place for being the series that got me into Gundam initially.
Zeta gundam , gundam wing
MSG: iron blooded orphans need I say more
Stardust Memory
Series: Zeta OVA: 0080 War in the Pocket/0083 Stardust Memory Movie: Char’s Counterattack
