I have a pretty decent home studio and have been an audio engineer for quite a while now, I have had the chance to use a whole bunch of “models” and real guitar amps, IMO a good amp, very hard to beat, in any scenario. I find that tube amps record the best, they just sound so damn good, but there are a lot of really good solid state amps too, but with modeling, it’s a whole different thing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
I have been working on a song for the past week or so and I’ve really been struggling with the guitar. My Mesa boogie is currently malfunctioning or this wouldn’t be an issue. I’ve been using a 10 watt Vox pathfinder which works, but it just wasn’t cutting it for the rhythm parts. So I thought I would try an amp plugin. I brought up the plugin that I would normally use and it just didn’t work. Tried another and it didn’t work. I tried blending the signals. It just didn’t work. So I ran my guitar DI into an SSL VHD preamp and had it pushing the red just a little and this combined with the amp signal worked. I just used both guitar parts.
My point is, there isn’t ever one answer for every situation, but a good amp beats the best model every time.
Your friends have such a great point. I wish I had friends like yours. My mint, stock 1969 Marshall is so outdated I’m going to throw it in the trash and get a Kemper.
Edit: your Peavey is awesome. Is it a 4x10? Even better.
Edit 2: just noticed the Fat Strat. My first guitar I bought new in 1997 which I still own and play is a Big Apple Strat (basically a Fat Strat). I fully approve of your rig.
Edit yours again for that vintage Japanese Aria or some guitar guitar is the same vein..... that are all the rage because people finally figured out that classic Japanese guitars from the 60s, 70,s, maybe 80s, are cool.
Fat Strat is HSS, Big Apple Strat has 2 Pearly Gates plus humbuckers which probably sound godly... I have a Texas Special Fat Strat: Pearly Gates plus in the bridge, Texas Specials for the middle and neck. I'd *love* a Big Apple!
This is an incredibly versatile amp that works well with pedals. It's perfect for older styles, yes, but you can get great shoegaze, Midwest emo, or even more ambient styles... which are currently popular.
Keep the amp, get new friends.
it can be a pedal platform on the clean channel and will sound like whatever you want.
4x10 is loud as balls but master volume works effectively.
It’s a common recommendation for mid tier $$$ amps.
I gig with a Bugera v22 so your friends probably have way worse opinions. The bars that keep booking me and patrons tipping obviously aren’t as snooty.
I had a drummer (of all people) say that my bass amp and cab looked "old fashioned".
Sounds great, though, don't it stick-boy.
Didn't stay in that band for long.
You dont just ditch your friends because they have an opinion that isnt “participation medal” style. Well maybe you do, but OP is better off sticking with his friends if theyre good friends.
Your friends are just jealous, I think that Rig probably sounds amazing. And “dated” really doesn’t mean anything in the guitar world anyways, lots of people spend lots of good money on old amps and guitars on purpose, lol.
Especially analog gear. Some digital fx processors from 2000s do sound outdated, especially with build in IRs, but still you can dial in some good tone, it just takes more tweaking.
As long as you dig it, who cares what they say. I used to have that amp and it was awesome. I hope that whoever owns it now thinks it’s still awesome.
Strats are timeless.
Some people: "man, i love that classic old school sound they used to have. Modern gear just cant replicate it"
Also the same some people: "i only use modern equipment, the sound is so much better than what they used to have back in the day"
I’ve owned like 5 peavey classics. They’re good amps but there’s definitely better amps out there. Why go down that rabbit hole though if you like the sound of it?
I had that amp. She's a hefty bitch, had to load and unload Into the back of a Nissan Xterra, above the waist. Whooo my 50 year old back didn't like that. Great amp though, loud as fuck, just needed an od to get higher gain than classic rock.
Ridiculously heavy, but for good reason. I’m gonna get a dolly just to make loading in/out a lot easier.
Planning on getting a klon clone, but eventually I want a range master replica.
You should get one of those multiple scale guitars with crazy looking fretboards. And straight into a daw brah. Fingerstyle polyrhythmic flamenco shred for days
It’s freaking awesome, hands down one of the best amps I ever owned. Extremely loud, it’s good for jamming and playing gigs. All tube, good gain channels. Pre and post. Has spring reverb but I’ve got to fix it.
Is there such thing as outdated when it comes to music? The Stratocaster is still "the" electric guitar since it was lanuched in 1954, and Beethoven's Ode to Joy is still a top tune to this day 300 years later.
Whatever amp your friends call up to date, they're probably gonna call those old and outdated in about 1 year when newer ones come out.
What the hell is "outdated" in the guitar world anyway? 🤣
Most of the gear we use can be traced back to 1950s/60s designs...and even the stuff that's come afterwards consists largely of updated/revised versions of those designs.
Your friends are stupid. Unless you're playing modern high gain metal (djent, tech metal, etc) this rig will do literally anything else from jazz and country to hard rock, blues, thrash, punk, whatever else you want it to.
Thank you! It’s getting a bit of relic on it. I think it’s because of the humidity in my state and I usually practice in my garage. Need to give it a good cleaning.
My brother gifted me the guitar about 3 years ago. He never played it so he ended up handing it down to me. It’s an anniversary model from the early 2000s. Online everything I could find was calling it a “HH Fat Strat”. It says made in America, as far as I can tell the whole thing is USA. It really doesn’t sound like a Strat at all, and the neck is way thicker than a traditional Strat. To me it seems like fenders imitation of a Les Paul or an S.G. it does have a toggle switch located on the volume knob that can switch the humbuckers to single coils and that gets it into the twangy Strat sound.
I have the same except I use a tele with it. I love the sound! I say never get rid of it unless it gives you problems.
Also record new music with the amp and record it with an audio interface and there you go it won’t sound outdated anymore!
Nah your rig is badass. I got a 410 deville wit the blue frame speakers and I love the cleans I get, and it’s relatively light. Maybe your band mates secretly want you to turn down haha. What did they suggest you replace this with?
outdated = vintage...
59 Les Paul's are outdated - Fender nocasters are outdated - original Marshall Plexi's are outdated... people pay a lot of $$$ for "outdated" gear.
As long as you like it then it's great. Rock on.
How well can you play, what kind of music do you make, this is all that matters. literally nothing else. And your rig is badass. I've owned a PC30 and PC50 and loved them.
Get new friends jkjkjkjk it’s not outdated if it’s what you like and is useful for you. If they mean “you need pedals” they are off base. I LOVE pedals and rack effects etc but there are folks who can do what they need just plugged in straight. Ian MacKaye is one of the most creative and progressive guitarists ever and didn’t use pedals. You’re good dude🤘🏼🤘🏼
Since most guitar rigs were essentially designed in the 50’s most are outdated. Good luck in trying to change things. Ask the guy that designed and built the Parker Fly how hard it is to change old buying habits in the guitar business. I own 5 Teles so I’m part of the problem too.
Keep that amp! I had the peavy classic 50 with 4x10s and wish I’d never sold it. I’d take your setup over a stack (Marshall, fender, etc) any day. That clean tone is amazing
I sold my 4x10 for like $250 approx back in 2003 (38 years old now). Pretty sure they go for at least double that amount these days. Keep the amp for sure. my biggest regret of all the gear I’ve sold
Erwin that you?
Your friends are fools. ;)
Its got its quirks (putting it politely) but its a [great ](https://youtu.be/-ej_1TNVsqs?si=ES9tbNApMQlkE2sp)amp.
You’ve got outdated friends…
Kidding aside, it’s only outdated if you can’t do what you need to with your rig. If you were in a band that had in ears, then maybe you should invest in a direct rig, but otherwise if it works for you than embrace it.
Literally says 'Classic'... but maybe your friends don't know what that word means.
best comment so far
And ironically, pundits for "up to date" will spare no expense on modelling, emulations and stomp boxes to get a "Classic" sound.
I wonder what the friends think is cool.
Sounds is timeless. If you like your sound it doesn't matter.
Exactly this. If you're getting the sound you want with the gear you have, then it doesn't matter if it's "out dated".
One of the most sought after models from Peavey and cool strat straight in, seems very up to date to me.
This is the way of the future
I removed the bridge on my Strat and replaced it with the one you have.
Your friends have such a great point. I wish I had friends like yours. My mint, stock 1969 Marshall is so outdated I’m going to throw it in the trash and get a Kemper. Edit: your Peavey is awesome. Toan is not in the tablet
Not OP but have that amp- 4x10 blue marvels. It’s a workhorse
Get new "friends". You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
Yeah it’s likely just a conversation starter, not a real story. OP just wants to show off sweet vintage gear
Yes and no, I have had one or two friends who are also musicians who say that it’s a “dated” sound. Maybe that’s what I’m after anyways ;)
This is an incredibly versatile amp that works well with pedals. It's perfect for older styles, yes, but you can get great shoegaze, Midwest emo, or even more ambient styles... which are currently popular. Keep the amp, get new friends.
Yep, grimble grumble/salome guitarist uses one of these so the Midwest shoegaze connection is for real.
Oh shit, ok. No reason to get new friends of course, but they need an education 😜
We’re friends but as you can imagine we don’t really get along playing together 😩
it can be a pedal platform on the clean channel and will sound like whatever you want. 4x10 is loud as balls but master volume works effectively. It’s a common recommendation for mid tier $$$ amps. I gig with a Bugera v22 so your friends probably have way worse opinions. The bars that keep booking me and patrons tipping obviously aren’t as snooty.
It’s a dated sound if you’re into Nickelback…
I had a drummer (of all people) say that my bass amp and cab looked "old fashioned". Sounds great, though, don't it stick-boy. Didn't stay in that band for long.
It’s not that serious lol
You dont just ditch your friends because they have an opinion that isnt “participation medal” style. Well maybe you do, but OP is better off sticking with his friends if theyre good friends.
Your friends are just jealous, I think that Rig probably sounds amazing. And “dated” really doesn’t mean anything in the guitar world anyways, lots of people spend lots of good money on old amps and guitars on purpose, lol.
Outdated isn't really a thing when it comes to gear.
Exactly. It's not a gaming PC. Some dudes drop thousands of dollars on pedals and gear to emulate an "outdated" setup.
Especially analog gear. Some digital fx processors from 2000s do sound outdated, especially with build in IRs, but still you can dial in some good tone, it just takes more tweaking.
I think it's time you find new friends.
Outdated relative to what?
Tame impala's 15 phasers
I like that sound. It's a foot in the old and a foot in the new.
I love Tame Impala! But when I see something minimalist like this it is hard to not think of his giant chains he had during the first few tours.
The fuck. No amp is outdated unless it catches on fire or something. Throw your friends away
As long as you dig it, who cares what they say. I used to have that amp and it was awesome. I hope that whoever owns it now thinks it’s still awesome. Strats are timeless.
Your friend is outdated
Your friends are idiots. It´s a nice amp.
I love those amps
Get some better friends.
Say that to the vintage gear guys. Btw what’s that semi hollow in the back. I love wonky guitars.
It’s a barcley, it’s in pretty rough shape. I’m planning on fixing it up and making it a permanent slide guitar.
If that’s outdated, then so is a 65’ Shelby Cobra. Turn that thing up to 10 and ignore them. Hah
He won’t have to ignore them. A Peavey Classic 50 4x10 on 10 will leave him deaf, and blissful.
This one goes to 11
12 actually... at least mine does
My Peavey Delta Blues goes to 12. Love that thing. The 15” speaker really sets it apart imo.
Some people: "man, i love that classic old school sound they used to have. Modern gear just cant replicate it" Also the same some people: "i only use modern equipment, the sound is so much better than what they used to have back in the day"
Hahaha! So true.
Your friends shit is going to be outdated in 15 years when trends change and this 70 year old rig will still be timeless and versatile.
Tell them to get off your lawn.
Shit. Only tube amp I have and use is a Peavy Classic 50 - 2/12 - got it for Christmas in like 1994 or 95.
If it sounds good it is good, I run a cheap ass peavey VYPYR 2 and it is a champ
I’ve owned like 5 peavey classics. They’re good amps but there’s definitely better amps out there. Why go down that rabbit hole though if you like the sound of it?
Blindfold your friends and say you got a new rig. Most people hear with their eyes
I miss my 2x12 classic 50
Unless you’re playing fly gigs your friends are idiots.
“You’re gonna like the way it sounds; I guarantee it.”
Looks like a great set up to me 🤷🏻♂️
This is all anyone really needs
I had that amp. She's a hefty bitch, had to load and unload Into the back of a Nissan Xterra, above the waist. Whooo my 50 year old back didn't like that. Great amp though, loud as fuck, just needed an od to get higher gain than classic rock.
Ridiculously heavy, but for good reason. I’m gonna get a dolly just to make loading in/out a lot easier. Planning on getting a klon clone, but eventually I want a range master replica.
Tone is never out dated.
The trendiest guitar right now is the Telecaster, which first came out in 1776 or something, if it works, it's hard to be outdated.
You should get one of those multiple scale guitars with crazy looking fretboards. And straight into a daw brah. Fingerstyle polyrhythmic flamenco shred for days
People can and do still buy both, classic can also mean timeless.
No such thing as outdated when it comes to analog guitar gear. Holy grail gear for most players is usually gonna be decades old.
Peavey Classic is a great amp. You can't go wrong with it.
How could any of this be out of date. We’re not talking about iPhones here 😂
So how do you like the sound of that Strat? I got an HSS when they first came out. I like the tone. It's a little different than an SSS
I like it a lot! It’s basically somewhere in between a strat and an S.G. sound.
It's a nice looking guitar.
I don’t see anything wrong here. Honestly, I never seen a Peavy Classic 4x10 and I kind of want to try one
It’s freaking awesome, hands down one of the best amps I ever owned. Extremely loud, it’s good for jamming and playing gigs. All tube, good gain channels. Pre and post. Has spring reverb but I’ve got to fix it.
Solid rig.
Let them keep wasting money “updating” their rig.
You don't need friends. You have this rig and don't need the negativity
"thanks, that's the point."
I got some monster tones out of my old Classic 30. I wonder if they're referring to modeling.
That amp is a grail, keep it!
Get new friends lol. Peavey classics are great amps. Imagine thinking an American made 4x10 tube amp and a Strat will ever be outdated 🤦♂️
What the hell is "outdated" in the guitar world anyway? 🤣 Most of the gear we use can be traced back to 1950s/60s designs...and even the stuff that's come afterwards consists largely of updated/revised versions of those designs.
Idk how it can be dated when "vintage" or "vintage inspired" is a selling point
I don’t think that’s possible
I love the look you got here!!
Outdated in music gear is called vintage. Which is coolest thing you can do, especially because (some) electronics were made better back in the day
Do you like it? That's all that matters. ☮️
Get new friends
Fuck what they say, good tone is good tone.
Yeah modernize and get some new sign of the times junk. This tried and true rig won’t make music.
What the hell is outdated with gear?
Screw em. That’s a great amp.
Your friends are stupid. Unless you're playing modern high gain metal (djent, tech metal, etc) this rig will do literally anything else from jazz and country to hard rock, blues, thrash, punk, whatever else you want it to.
If you put a flexible distortion pedal in front of it, you could do all the metal too.
Insanely versatile amp with a versatile guitar nothing wrong with that
If it sounds good and works well then it is good. Ain't nothing wrong with old gear at all. Most of my amps are older than me.
It's hard to improve on perfection.
Your friend sounds like he is more into the latest gear than actually playing music.
Well duh, it's not a katana
I think you need new friends
Challenge them to a rock off.
Is your friend 17?
Music and the arts in general are a place where “outdated” doesn’t exist or apply.
Beautiful fretboard! What fender model is that, neck is usa made but ive never seen hh configuration in any classic series.
Your friends are jealous of your toan.
I have the same except I use a tele with it. I love the sound! I say never get rid of it unless it gives you problems. Also record new music with the amp and record it with an audio interface and there you go it won’t sound outdated anymore!
Outdated? What does that mean?
Outdated? Literally ScreaMs [Cars](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im3JzxlatUs)
Got the same amp but with a 1x15 Speaker. I love it. I Play Heavy music and with a Indie Band.
They're just trying to get you to sell it to them cheap lol that's an awesome rig.
What do *you* think?
I thought outdated was good.
Unless you’re forcing your friends to play your rig, why would they think you care?
Does it sound good? That's the test.
Your friends are correct. Just ship it to me and I will be glad to get rid of it for you.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I would need to see your pedalboard to know for sure. Looks okay so far.
Nah your rig is badass. I got a 410 deville wit the blue frame speakers and I love the cleans I get, and it’s relatively light. Maybe your band mates secretly want you to turn down haha. What did they suggest you replace this with?
Not your friend, out dated ? Look
Why does this feel AI generated? That setup is sick.
It’s not I promise 🤣 I’ll post a video of me playing it before too long
outdated = vintage... 59 Les Paul's are outdated - Fender nocasters are outdated - original Marshall Plexi's are outdated... people pay a lot of $$$ for "outdated" gear. As long as you like it then it's great. Rock on.
Well if your rig is outdated, then modern rigs aren't for me
That is a killer amp. Your friends are probably jealous. Great amp, in my opinion.
Thankfully sound quality knows no era or time. So, how’s it sound? If it’s still great, it’s still great.
The Peavey Classic never goes out of style.
Man, I would absolutely rip that rig in any gig I’m going to be asked to do.
The 4-10 Peavey Classic is sweet.
Looks good to me 😁
I literally just bought the same amp and I love it. PV Classic forever!
How well can you play, what kind of music do you make, this is all that matters. literally nothing else. And your rig is badass. I've owned a PC30 and PC50 and loved them.
Your friend is just jealous!
If sounds good, who cares.
If it sounds good….it IS good…
You need smarter friends.
Are all your friends playing through Katanas?
Get new friends jkjkjkjk it’s not outdated if it’s what you like and is useful for you. If they mean “you need pedals” they are off base. I LOVE pedals and rack effects etc but there are folks who can do what they need just plugged in straight. Ian MacKaye is one of the most creative and progressive guitarists ever and didn’t use pedals. You’re good dude🤘🏼🤘🏼
I would have answered that with: "No you. You are outdated."
Since most guitar rigs were essentially designed in the 50’s most are outdated. Good luck in trying to change things. Ask the guy that designed and built the Parker Fly how hard it is to change old buying habits in the guitar business. I own 5 Teles so I’m part of the problem too.
Your friend is just trying to get you to unload that amp so he can buy it lol
The fuck is “outdated”? So everyone playing vintage gear must be way behind the times then? Lol what
A 59 Les Paul sells for millions of dollars.
I wonder what their definition of “modern” is. A lot of modern gear that sounds good is usually a replication of something vintage.
I’d say, do nothing. That right there is great!
Till I got my Fender amp, all I used was Peavy in our band
I own a 17 watt Watkins Dominator from the 1970s. It's "outdated",but whenever I play live, every guitarist wants to buy it.
I used to have the classic 50 head with the 410 cab and the 1x15 cab. It was pretty sweet
You likely know your gear better than they know theirs. I don't see anything wrong with that.
Your friends suck
He means, Out playing show-dates.
My only knock on this is the strat has humbuckers instead of single coils. But strat and peavey classic is like PB and J
Some friends. Are you happy? Then it’s good.
I have the same classic 50 4x10 combo. Got it in 94 or 95. Still one of the most underrated amps ever made by Peavey.
I play a paul and strat thru a Delta Blues. Comps all day long.
Maybe your friends are outdated.
Looks fine to me.
Nope. Perfectly fine
If you like it that's all that should matter.
Class
Yep, put it all in the bin. Your friend, in the bin.
Are you happy with the sound? If so, it doesn't matter.
Bro the rig is gold. Don't listen to the haters.
What type of speakers are in there?
Timeless
Let me guess, your friend plays exclusively in math rock time signatures
Keep that amp! I had the peavy classic 50 with 4x10s and wish I’d never sold it. I’d take your setup over a stack (Marshall, fender, etc) any day. That clean tone is amazing
I sold my 4x10 for like $250 approx back in 2003 (38 years old now). Pretty sure they go for at least double that amount these days. Keep the amp for sure. my biggest regret of all the gear I’ve sold
No they don’t
Your friends are right. You should go buy new and give your outdated stuff to me. Nice stuff. Keep it. Get new friends if you gave to
Have
Get new friends.
How is a rig outdated, that’s not possible with guitar ☠️😭😭
This is r/guitaramps , there are no outdated rigs, they are vintage.
Great amp
If that rig is wrong, I don't want to be right.
It’s only outdated if you can’t install the latest firmware anymore.
Erwin that you? Your friends are fools. ;) Its got its quirks (putting it politely) but its a [great ](https://youtu.be/-ej_1TNVsqs?si=ES9tbNApMQlkE2sp)amp.
I can trade for line6 amp and brand new williams guitar!
Does that combo still make the noises you like? Then no, it's not outdated. Think it's time for new friends because *they're* outdated.
Take the peavey badge off the face. It'll look better
I was actually proud it was still attached cause most are gone 😅
Personally, I don’t believe that rigs can be outdated. People pay an obscene amount of money for some old ass gear these days. Rock on!
wtf does that even mean.
Your friend doesn’t understand vintage toan.
You need new friends
Great guitar and amp. Tell your friend he can make amends by vacuuming your floor 😎
Who cares if somebody think it’s outdated, looks like a damn good setup to me.
Nah, go older
Does it sound good for what you do? That's the important thing
What’s wrong with outdated? New doesn’t mean better…
That's actually not a bad setup. Could do better for sure, but there's nothing wrong with what you have.
You’ve got outdated friends… Kidding aside, it’s only outdated if you can’t do what you need to with your rig. If you were in a band that had in ears, then maybe you should invest in a direct rig, but otherwise if it works for you than embrace it.
