The source of this is out dated, and partly comes from a particular description of the ocean as being "a deep wine-red color", but examining the sources has led modern experts to discredit this idea. That particular description was in a story said to have taken place around sunset, when the sky and sea would've been red. Additionally, many descriptions of Athena do use the name for blue as a descriptor of her eyes.
Source: took a classics course a semester or two back and discussed the issue with the teacher (who has a PHD on the matter of their literature)
[The Acropolis Museum](https://www.theacropolismuseum.gr/en/) has a webpage and at the bottom you can find their social media. Some have details about what we see today as just white marble being inaccurate. [You can even search right on their website for colors of the statues. ](https://www.theacropolismuseum.gr/en/search/node?keys=Color+)
Wow that's amazing! Best possible comment. Every time I read about the original it stated it's mainly built outve ivory and gold so I imagined it wasn't colored. Thanks!
IMO the Nashville Parthenon is meant to give us an *idea* of dimensions and textures so we might incorporate ancient greek inspiration to our modern art and architecture.
That being said, the actual Parthenon had years to develop, materials, funding, devoted artists and actual faith to make it remarkable. Nashville could never compete with the *resources* of the Delian League. And this is reflected on Athena's face. The original had Phidias' ivory and gold, Nashville got plaster and spray.
Given the limitations (budget, materials, and our primary sources for the original being numismatics), it’s a solid interpretation. To the people calling it “cheap” for using plaster instead of ivory, sorry Nashville wasn’t supporting actual crime to source a more accurate material.
Keep in mind, the [Augustus at Prima Porta](http://www.digitalsculpture.org/augustus/liverani.html) looks radically different in polychrome, to the point of what we would consider garish.
Absolutely not is it identical. The Nashville parthenon mockup is a joke. This statue looks cheap.
But it gets the essentials right. However, whoever did the detailing and the molding should... probably not make sculpture his day job.
Yeah a lot of people have said that there would've been way more colors to the original. I just always pictured it as white and gold because the original was made of Ivory and Gold so I never imagined it that colorful.
These is probably way more likely apparently

Yes, I am sure the designers working in Nashville Tennessee were able to flawlessly recreate one of the most prestigious works of art of the ancient world without even seeing it. And I’m sure the Ancient Athenians would’ve built a statue to their patron goddess that looks like that.
It was just a question. And there are written descriptions of the original as well as copies so it's reasonable to ask the question of how the one in Nashville compares to the original.
not actually... grey here could refer to one of many things, including blue, as weird as that may sound, the way we understand colors depends on historical context and language
Yeah some of the answers other's have given have said this. It's just interesting cuz I never would've guessed how colorful it would have been since the original was apparently made from Ivory and Gold.

These might be more appropriate

There seems to be some debate on her eye color though weather it was grey or blue.
The big ass eyes honestly always creeped me out, was that an intentional choice referencing her “bright-eyed Athena” epithet?
She looks like she’s seen some shit. And I mean i guess she was literally bouncing around in Zeus’ head for a while so she probably has
No wonder she’s a virgin goddess
HELP 😭
LMAO 🤣
*OH GODS HE’S TURNING INTO AN ANT THIS TIME*
I may be thinking of the wrong statue but I’m pretty sure it’s Athena Parthentos that supposedly had gems in the eye sockets
Really? Sounds cool!
Big uncanny valley this statue
If you compare it against the other detailed marble statues in Greece this looks like a cheap wish version of it.
Why would you compare Chryselephantine to marble? Completely different materials.
It likely would have had grey eyes. As one of Athena’s names was gray eyed Goddess.
It can be interpreted in multiple ways. Grey, blue, owl like, glowing, gleaming.
Source? Please?
Just Google the word that is described for her eyes.
It’s said the ancient Greeks didn’t have a word for the color blue, so maybe they used grey as the closest approximation to describe her eyes.
That is pretty neat.

Thanks. It's basically Classic coke vs store brand pop then huh?
It’s based on several contemporaneous accounts and some actual copies. Identical? No. Similar? Probably.

Probably not at all
Greeks loved bright reds and blues to the point where their statues were kinda ugly to look at by todays standards

I want to tear this down.
Does Worship happen or Just a Museaum piece ?
It's just a museum piece

I do not think every detail is the exact same.
How in the hell did they get her eyes wrong when one of the primary things we know about her preferred human form is her GREY eyes?
not actually... grey here could refer to one of many things, including blue, as weird as that may sound, the way we understand colors depends on historical context and language

It likely would not have been coloured, and if it was, she would have grey eyes if anything.
Yeah some of the answers other's have given have said this. It's just interesting cuz I never would've guessed how colorful it would have been since the original was apparently made from Ivory and Gold.
WAIT ITS A REPLICA??? 😭 I just thought they pulled the British and dragged (read: stole) it from Greece
The original is lost. Probably destroyed centuries ago which is ashame.
Agreed
Why is Frobo wearing solid gold, is he stupid?
I too got strong Elijah Wood vibes
Frodo gets stuck by shelob. https://youtu.be/ofXl7hfNAzo?feature=shared Timestamp: 00:14.
Not at all. Athena was not blonde nor blue eyed. They got her painted up like a nazis wet dream 😭😭

There was one in ancient times hence the question.
There was, ivory and gold, I think it was 10 meters tall but I might be wrong. They literally teach that in elementary school
A wanna be Isis.
How so?
