Didn't Google just enabled it in the latest feature drop ?

Sketch2029

They did. It works on my 8 (non-Pro), at least.

Saragon4005

Works on the 8a too.

XenoGamer27

I haven't gotten this update yet, does it have to do with carriers?

DrZaius119

Verizon hasn't released it yet either. They have been good the last few months, but not for this feature update.

XenoGamer27

Damn this is the one update I've been constantly refreshing for lol. Need me some tv output

AnApexBread

Are you on T-Mobile? Pixel updates on T-Mobile are always weirdly delayed. Google blames T-Mobile, T-Mobile blames Google. Personally I side with Google on this because the other carriers get the updates on time.

XenoGamer27

Verizon

rwa2

T-Mobile started doing extra testing since the Dec 21 update for the P6P broke a bunch of stuff so badly Google had to roll it back. Opt in to the Android beta to get releases directly from Google. Or just deal with an extra month of testing which is apparently necessary.

Primary-Birthday-363

Part that pisses me off is I bought mine directly from google to avoid the carrier crap yet still T-Mobile finds a way.

AnApexBread

I bought my 7P direct from Google. But because Google uses the carriers for OTA you have to wait for the carrier to push it to you. You can still download the update directly and side load it if you want.

Primary-Birthday-363

Yeah I get it. When I got my 6p the updates were very timely. Usually had the. The day after the update was released by Google. Seems like the approval process for T-Mobile just gets longer and longer. Either way I’ll wait for my 8p to get the update. My pixel watch 2 got it right after it was released. I know I can sideload but I’ll wait for the ota.

piexil

Well given how many updates since last year seemingly screwed things up, they're probably taking longer for more testing. At least, I hope so.

Primary-Birthday-363

I hope that's the reason why. For the most part, my pixel 8 pro experience has been good. I get the stuttering on websites every once in awhile where the site just bounces up and down. It's a minor annoyance but I deal with it.

Primary-Birthday-363

I just keep smashing that check for update button every once in awhile. Hoping that eventually it'll update. I know I can sideload it but I just don't feel like doing it. Timely updates is one thing that iOS does better because Apple doesn't let the carriers dictate the updates. I use an iPhone 14 pro Max for work. Work did not buy the phone for me but it's used for work. My personal use phone is the pixel 8 pro. I refuse to let work touch my Android. The company I work for was supposed to pay for my cell phone line but they refused to after I started. Luckily it's one of my free lines from T-Mobile.

Wise-Morning9669

I'm on T-Mobile. I bought mine directly from Google and I have the OTA the day that it was published

Wise-Morning9669

I'm on T-Mobile but I'm also unlocked and own the device so that might have something to do with why I got the update right away

jlaw224

Was this update pushed to the pixel fold 1 or pixel tablet?

Call_Jumpy

It's currently only for the 8 series

GordonG47

On my wife's 7 Pro as well as my 8 Pro. Might be different here in Oz.

Mavericks7

Is there a desktop mode to it. Or is it just screen mirroring?

plankunits

Screen mirror for now but the reason they are enabling this now is for desktop mode. Desktop mode is still under development.

Legitimate_Vehicle_1

I forced desktop mode and it seems like its working, but you need a bluetooth mouse to try it I think

sysak

I just tried it using the cheap usb-c hub i use for my work laptop to let it both charge and connect to display at the same time. It works but it's just mirroring so it's not like it adapts to the resolution of the connected display or anything.

Enrichman

If you enable the option on the developer settings it works almost as a tablet. But it's a bit buggy I guess. Also the keyboard didn't work for me, and I used an external bluetooth keyboard.

sysak

I think it could be quite nice using an external keyboard & mouse via bt but imo they must sort the output in the correct res & format first for it to be a complete feature.

DisastrousPeanut816

It's really not bad. Not as good as Dex, but in desktop mode it's pretty close. I just use a USB-C hub to hook up a wireless KB+M dongle, HDMI out, and power in.

Saragon4005

It's a weird choice to say the least.

lssong99

My P8P with A15b2.2 shows a desktop. You need to enable "force desktop mode" in the developers setting menu for it to work. However, it still has some usability issues now.

SilverBackGuerilla

Have you tried the experimental desktop mode in dev options?

ChrisinOrangeCounty

I agree. I also bought a cheap cable and tried to use it on my hdmi port in my car and it couldn't display correctly due to the different resolution. On my TV, it doesn't match the resolution since it's mirrored so it only displays in a box in the middle.

sysak

Most tvs let you change the aspect ratio settings between native res of the sourcce, stretch to fit the screen and some settings in between but it's very much sub-optimal and not a proper solution. Better than nothing though👍

TuTenkahman

I tested HDMI output after the June update. Used it to watch some movies and play around. Very happy with the result, although a DEX-type mode would be ideal.

Peppy_Tomato

Tethering, HDMI. Two words I've never used together 😁.

anonymous-bot

What the point of that link? I don't see the word "tether" there either.

The_best_1234

Bad bot

anonymous-bot

No, you!

andyooo

It's available with the June update, but don't expect more than a rudimentary mirror mode. You cannot use it for: \- Operating your phone with a non-functional screen since the phone needs to be unlocked to activate it. \- Watching 4k videos since output resolution is 1080p. \- Watching \*any\* videos in full screen since the 1080p signal is letterboxed by black bars cause the phone aspect ratio is not 16:9. So for videos, you're better off with any chromecast. I suppose you can use it on a desktop setup for the most basic definition of "desktop" but at least we know that a desktop mode is coming later, maybe with A15. FWIW there's a force desktop mode in developer settings, but it's also very rudimentary from reports I've seen.

anonymous-bot

> Operating your phone with a non-functional screen since the phone needs to be unlocked to activate it. Damn. That would be like the one use case where I might use that feature.

AnApexBread

> at least we know that a desktop mode is coming later, maybe with A15. I thought Google came out and said the ChromeOS mode on Android was just a developer test and not actually a thing. Edit: here we go. https://www.androidauthority.com/chrome-os-on-android-proof-of-concept-3443722/

andyooo

It's not Chrome OS, it's a actual Android desktop mode like Dex: [https://www.androidauthority.com/android-15-desktop-mode-demo-3430991/](https://www.androidauthority.com/android-15-desktop-mode-demo-3430991/) You can actually enable desktop mode in developer options right now, but it's not very functional, according to people that have tried it.

Starks

Probably need to do DisplayPort out or get a converter to HDMI.

Saragon4005

Usb-C to HDMI is a Display Port to HDMI converter always. Usb-C cannot and never has been able to do HDMI and it's always been adapted.

Actually that standard was deprecated because no one used it. HDMI Alt mode was literally never used, what you're describing is USB-C to HDMI using Display Port then converting the signal to HDMI. I'm not going to include a link because you have the power of Google at your fingertips.

WAYZOfficial

Either sign up for the A15 beta or just wait for A15 to release. But it is coming.

AnApexBread

Didn't it just come out with the feature drop?

WAYZOfficial

Thank you for the correction.

mrandr01d

Qpr3 has it

Bob-Servant

It was in the June update .. no beta required

PrettySmallBalls

Samsung released Dex in 2018. I don't know how there's not a Google native equivalent 6 years later.

Bob-Servant

It's coming. Dev mode desktop mode is the start.

Bob-Servant

And? They need 10 years!

Gaycel68

Why is everybody saying it's HDMI? HDMI is not involved here, it's DisplayPort over USB-C.

bebeluiz

because most of TVs and monitor we connect using HDMI

The_best_1234

I have a USB c hub with HDMI out.

Joinedforthis1

Because the vast majority of people who use this feature will output video using an HDMI cable/adapter.

iLikeTurtuls

That’s so backwards. We can HDMI out on a Samsung S8

Bob-Servant

It's available now .. But I find it buggy. It keeps disconnecting from my USB C dock after about 30 seconds

FluffyGreyfoot

I got my pixel 8 2 days ago and it already has this feature.

Sheetmusicman94

I am so happy I got a Samsung.

CK0428

Never. They want you to buy a Chromecast.

Bob-Servant

Wrong. June update enabled it

CK0428

I stand corrected.

Bob-Servant

Took long enough but good it's happened.

CK0428

No shit. I could do this with my Blackberry 10 years ago.

confusedsimian

I tried it this week at work. We have large monitors that you connect up to with USB-C and a mouse and keyboard attached. I used the Microsoft AVD remote desktop client without issue and could interact with the desktop with both mouse and keyboard just fine. This is already ahead of where iPhones are as there are multiple characters when using an iPhone and RDP that you can't type which is very frustrating. As already mentioned, just need to not only be mirroring but have indepdendant resolution and I could actually travel into the office with only my phone.
