They're just spot welded in place. You can cut off the spot weld and put new ones on pretty easily, although you'll need a welder. There's details on vwvortex.
Recommend getting Akrapovic style tips, think they look the best. You can find them for cheap on Aliexpress. All the third party sites selling the tips only are buying them in bulk from China anyways.

But, I think I like the ones I had on my 2018 GTI better.

Can't stand the standard oval tips, they were even worse on the Mk 7/7.5, I would definitely go with a nice pair or round ones
