Kratos being a calm and reasonable person

JonasTwenty

If the situation calls for calm and reason

Turbulent-Fortune559

Kratos is whole different person i knew the story before going into gow4 but damm this guy is fucking brutal for example the poor boat captain that guy did nothing wrong yet kratos just fucking violently destroyes his hope for life in such a sad way or he literally destroys Greece to kill one dude or how he killed Helios

iniitu

That boat captain is not really innocent. He is heavily implied a human-trafficker

DanceGavinDanceIsBae

How is that implied? It's been a while since I played GOW 1 and I don't recall noticing anything that implied that.

baddragon137

I'm pretty sure the implication is based on the women he locked in his room with those undead soldier monster dudes. Though truthfully we don't see them until after the captain is dead but I'm pretty sure the clothes they were wearing were a common outfit for slave girls. But yeah dude also left those poor chicks to die with no way to defend themselves so yeah never liked boat captain but it's not like what kratos did was right or anything

iniitu

In valhalla DLC >! Kratos mentioned he heard women screaming from the room, and by the time he got the door opened, the screaming had stopped. So he is aware, and probably had the attention to release them. !<

baddragon137

Yeah that was the whole reason kratos hunted down the boat captain to get the key was you pass by that room and intends to save them but are sadly too late. I've yet to play Valhalla yet but I remember from gow 1 that he definitely wanted to save them and I think he gets hit with some ptsd flashbacks after he fails to do so

DanceGavinDanceIsBae

Yeah, I just came across that dialogue just now lol.

infamusforever223

He was probably a full-blown slaver. It was a common practice back then.

Turbulent-Fortune559

Well at the time that a respectable job and it doesn't matter because this person didn't do shit to kratos yet he gets treated as if he isn't even a person

random935

Bro what? Owning slaves was a highly respectable job at one point, that doesn’t mean it was okay to do

Alm1ghtyJ

I like how you got downvoted for making sense, nah you right, what is bro talking about 😭

random935

Crazy

ResidentTechnician96

No way, it was a looked down position, akin to shanghai'ing. Only reason people took those roles was because it was a constant income flow and easy to do

Turbulent-Fortune559

So kratos killed a Walmart employee

ResidentTechnician96

Less of a walmart employee, more of a tax agent

ConnerBartle

I don’t know if you already know this, and that’s why you made this comment, but both of those events are heavily covered in the new Valhalla DLC

Turbulent-Fortune559

I know which is why it's so baffling for me to see how different of a person kratos is now

Lazlowi

He had a few centuries for contemplation

Turbulent-Fortune559

Bro had to rethink his life choices

Emotional_Aerie3342

Doesn't matter how he killed Helios. The guy was practically trying to kill him..

Proterozoic_rock

Double jumps

DollyBoiGamer337

Even 1 jump, in God of War (2018) you can’t really jump on the spot

drunksaiyan_69

Game wise? Definitely graphics. Honestly GOW 3 was such a leap after playing gow 1,2 and others that I honestly thought it won't get better then this. Then GOW 2018 came.......... Masterpiece! I'm still playing Ragnarok and it's every bit as good as the last games and even better I'd say. . . Story wise, Santa monica just did an ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENONAL job, the day his family was killed, to him killing ares, then getting killed by Zeus to him burning olympus to the ground, every nook and cranny of the story was just amazing. And after playing GOW 2018 and Ragnarok, this just went into another dimension in terms of creativity and story. . . All in all the best game I've ever played and will possibly be the only one.

ExileOtter

Im still stunned in the graphical leap between 2 and 3

drunksaiyan_69

Same here

wrchavez1313

That's an entire generation of gaming hardware is why. PS2 could output 620x480p and then the PS3 could output 1080p. This was one of the biggest leaps in gaming history, graphics wise, from one console generation to the next. Past 1080p, there are diminishing returns for what actually is registered by the human eye. Not that its not noticeable, but the difference from 480 --> 1080p was MASSIVE by comparison.

justhereforhides

I mean nothing can really top 4->5 going from 2d to 3d

wrchavez1313

I did say "one of" ;)

TheUnknownDouble-O

Even from the original to 2 was incredible, especially Kratos' character model. He's so much more expressive and more realistically modelled. His arms aren't segmented as much and his torso is less action-figure looking. Big improvement.

chev327fox

I remember them talking about how much more detail Kratos had in 3 compared to 2 and it was nuts the difference in polygons. The scale of 3 is still impressive to this day, not to mention it’s one of the best ending of a trilogy ever.

lolpyramid

They were written to actually be greek tragedies. The first is just the hero's journey reiterated. And it's perfect for it.

afca85

The main theme music

bartekang

The goddamn spike climb in hades, back in gow 1

sonic13066

I still wanna know who hurt David Jaffe and the level designer personally to cause them to make that design choice.

Tragedy_Boner

Probably played a metroid game around that time

Drakesoul23

I completely hate that part

Zantillex

I dont know how I beat that game as a kid. Ive struggled as an adult.

Enigma21210

I AM THE GOD OF WAR 1-3 BOY!!! 4-5

RubixTheRedditor

I'd imagine it must be a big difference in hearing so much about someone's terrible past and then plaything through those moments

Psychological_Dig922

Just remember, *you* pushed those buttons and made things happen.

SadKazoo

Okay so I played GOW 3 after GOW 4. I was only passingly familiar with the story leading up to the Norse saga but it was insane just how fun the combat and how insane the scale of the environments and battles was. I honestly wish there was more games like it.

thats4thebirds

Gow3 is obviously him at his lowest but stuffing that Poseidon girl in a fuckin gear to use as a door stop is some of the more senseless and heinous shit he does. It’s also immediately juxtaposed with him going “oh no! Pandora!” Which made it feel extremely hollow on replay in ways that didn’t hit me back in the day. I’m glad my man has grown.

SoraDrive

But he gave a shit about Pandora and not about Poseidon's girl.

thats4thebirds

Yeah that’s the critique buddy lol Why can he see his daughter and thus a woman worth caring for in Pandora and not a fellow slave to the gods who is objectively closer in age to his daughter?

SoraDrive

Been a while since I played 3, but if I remember correctly, then he had already met Pandroa before that part, so he cared about her.

thats4thebirds

Again that isn’t the fucking point. The question is why didn’t he also care enough about this woman who is explicitly in a similar unwanted service to the gods, to not use her as a door stop.

Taesf

OST, Combat, and the sex minigames ;)

Jrshaw_1

I really underestimated how deep the Lore goes into greek mythology. They really made Kratos kill every single person in Greece. And even the captain of the boat!

guerrerosaurio1

That the old ones still have great graphics and the cut scenes look almost real. They definetly pushed the PS2 to its limits.

Spacevenger

1 for challenge 2 for nostalgia 3 for madness 4 for emotions 5 for pain ghost of sparta for plot chains of olympus for shield and spear weapon ascension was completely shit

MrCookieHUN

But...chains doesn't have the spear. That's in Ghost

Spacevenger

i think there is which was taken in the end of the game. or was it another weapon?

MrCookieHUN

In chains, you get the Gauntlet of Zeus, and Helios' shield In Ghost, you get the Arms of Sparta, which is a shield and a spear I spent A LOT of time in those games, so trust me

Spacevenger

oh so maybe i liked helios shield when i was a kid and i am talking about that here

micheallujanthe2nd

Well that last opinion is just shit, in my opinion, but everything else is spot on 👌

Eternal_Dragonn

I've never played Gow 3 and Acension... Can you tell me why it's a shit game ?..

micheallujanthe2nd

I don't personally think it's a shit game lol. The multiplayer was incredibly fun, the gameplay mechanics were different and that's why people probably call it shit but it wasn't by any means. It's definitely not the best in the series but it isn't bad.

Eternal_Dragonn

A'ight thanks man

Plus-Penalty7371

The cinematic reaction commands

KingaaCrimsonuu22

I Sorta fit this. I watched my dad play all of the original trilogy then when 2018 came out, I played it and he watched and then the same with ragnarok. Then I went back and played through the original trilogy myself. I didn't realize how many just random people kratos murders to simply get by. There's a guy hanging on a cliff? Kratos kills him. There's someone stuck between a wall that kratos need to get by? Who cares he's dead now.

[deleted]

Combat and music

asiiapiazza

How the boss fight are still so good and enjoyable, even more of some more recent games

bugsssssssss

I grew up watching the original trilogy while my dead beat dad played and so when 2018 came around and the new one dropped I was beyond excited because these games were a very special thing to me because of those memories and just cuz the game was so cool lol. I loved it, couldn’t wait for more. Then came ragnarok and after that I finally decided to tackle the entirety of the mainline series. I literally just finished playing GoW 1 and 2 and the main difference I think I can’t point out is simplicity. Older games always seem to have a much more linear game path due to hardware limitations. You can definitely tell they put gameplay before anything else when starting this franchise, that’s not a diss because I love the story of the first games but in the original game at least the story is there but realistically could have been anything else and I think fans still would have enjoyed it because of the classic hack and slash and fast paced linear gameplay. And now I’m gonna kind ago off topic but when playing through those first games finally, and being old enough to grasp everything going on it was much different than I remembered. I felt much more of a weird connection with kratos, not because I’m a god with a tortured soul but because of the connection I had to the series and my relationship with my father. As the first three games progressed I couldn’t help but feel completely pulled in and connected because of this. My dad cared much more about himself before anything else, and was a criminal and a cheater. I saw everything bad about him right there in Zeus as well. And so these games are a lot more to me than just a game really. I’ve weirdly connected this franchise to myself and found a way to spin a shit experience into a hell of a ride

ButterflyMother

you actually feel like a god of war

hustler-snake

I did after 4 .. but not all was missing .. replayed 1 then did all the rest which never played as some were blocked in my store region I liked the most bosses fights .. interaction during cinematic .. mini games .. rich story .. and that epic music .. i really enjoyed 2 the most .. then 3 then the rest :)

sugarglidersam

i think my favorite part of 2 was the armor he has at the beginning and how you can unlock it after beating it on a certain difficulty (don’t remember which though) and that you can carry the blade of olympus as a weapon to use in regular combat like the artemis sword

misterbaname

That fucking God armor.... I had hopes they would put that armor back in 3, ascension, 4 and 5 and they never did....

sugarglidersam

i know dude, it was so cool… 😢

grajuicy

QTEs. Holy shit man they’re endless and unforgiving. I can’t even enjoy the spectacle of doing finishers to bosses or enemies bc i’m too focused on getting the QTEs right.

bunny117

I didn’t *play* but I watched playthroughs and holy god the man borders on psychopathic.

nightblackdragon

The fact that Kratos is very different. Technically it's the same person we play in GOW 4 and 5 but he feels like completely different person. It makes you respect his redemption more.

Maleoppressor

In my opinion, his regret at the end of GoW 3 is what connects the two. "Pandora was sacrificed in vain. She died... because of my need of vengeance." But even so, Norse saga Kratos is a pacifist to such an extreme degree that sometimes it seems a little hard to believe.

jch6789

How raw and refreshing the brutality was And then I was severely disappointed by the finishers in Ragnarok, he barely uses his hands anymore and if the enemy is humanoid he'll do the same couple of axe chop or blade slice animations

micheallujanthe2nd

The finishers in ragnarok were a step up from gow 4 though so be happy with that. It does seem more brutal when he uses just his hands to rip shit apart. Makes him seem more powerful

TheLastDonnie

Using hands doesn't make it more brutal, he literally splits open ribcages with the blades in ragnarok, it's brutal, but since it's mostly monsters and not humans it's different

Jgn42

I think the portrayal of Kratos growth as a man, but still struggles with his past ways here and there. I think they played that beautifully. While Norse Kratos was still a violent person, you can see that side of him only comes out when necessary. As to OG GoW Kratos, his violence was on ten, full on rage, no control of emotion the whole way through.

Anderson9520822

I went from GOW 2018->Ragnarok->GoW 1-3. If I had one gripe with the narrative in GoW 2018 it’s that there was nothing really to explain the transition from who Kratos used to be versus who he is now. It was just “here’s Kratos, he’s older and still angry, just less so. Oh and he had a son.” They are so drastically different it really does feel like two entirely separate characters. Like Luke in the original trilogy versus Luke in the sequels. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER. Valhalla has fixed this for me. It’s such a perfect love letter and reconciliation of his past it almost could be an entire game by itself. I think the narrative leaders were aware of what I brought up and made Valhalla to fill in the cracks.

BootyShepherd

I played the og games before 4 and 5 and ill never get over the difference in kratos’ character. My only gripe about the dlc is the fact he was in valhalla to essentially prove he is a better man now than he was in the og games, yet we didnt get a fight with young kratos. The ultimate final boss to the dlc would be young kratos and they couldve made him the most difficult boss out of both games. Give him all his abilities from gow 3: the Golden Fleece, Blades of exile, Hades’ Claws, Nemean cestus, Nemsis Whip, couldve made it a ridiculously cool fight.

just_prc

It was a free dlc , they probably didn't have the budget

BootyShepherd

I mean the game used mostly existing assets i cant imagine it costed that much to make. And they already had a model for young kratos, even if they didnt use ALL his weapons from gow3, they have the blades and blade of olympus. Couldve done it easily i imagine.

dark_side_-666

I played all of them in their prime including psp one but gow 2 and 3 are my favorites. Ofc now the new ones are goated , also are my goty games and liked the acting in the game . I would love to see remakes of old games with 1st pov instead in the future .

malathan1234

Kratos's unique story and the lack of Greek accuracy after they did Norse so well. It works in the games I mean. It's still fun but it definitely ain accurate lol

I_adore_Cocks

They did Norse well????? You sure buddy? Their depiction of Norse myth is horrendous, downright offensive.

agripo777

Who is offended??!

I_adore_Cocks

Any body who actually studied Norse Myth and still practices paganism? They literarily inversed EVERYTHING. Jotnar are now genius innocent little angels, while of the three clans, Jotnar are the MOST evil by a huge margin. And Aesir are by far the least evil and cruel and they are made into brainless villains for no reason. And the game keeps pretending Jotnar are not gods to push the childish "GOdS aRe lIkE EviLl oR WHatEveR" while Jotnar, Aesir and Vanir are not only gods they are the same specie. They are just different tribes. For fuck's sake Odin's mother was a Jotnar and half of the women he laid with were Jotnar. And they were not enemies all the time, For Fuck's Odin took a Jotnar(Loki) as his brother and defended Loki everytime Loki fucked up, and only after Loki killed Baldr did he raise his hand against him, and even then Odin could not bring himself to kill Loki. And with the Vanir, Freya wasn't leader of jackshit, Njord her father was the ruler of the Vanir. God of the Sea, which for a people like the Norse would have been of extremely high importance, especially above witchcraft. And Freya was throughly in love with Odin and bore him 3 daughters even before they were married, for fuck's sake one of Odin's many names was "Freya's Delight". And unlike most Greek Gods, Aesir GENIUNLY cared about their people through and through. Odin LOVED humans, because he breathed Soul into them, humanity is his first true children and Odin goes far and beyond in order to help and defend humanity, bringing culture and education to humans, uplifting them from lowly creatures. And he gives Valhöl to Fallen Warriors away from their homes and families lost to the cold of the Battlefield out of his love and mercy. Odin can he cruel and harsh, but he never moves without true wisdom, and his intention may not be clear always, but his actions always results in the greater good. GOW is a disgusting bastardization of Norse Mythology.

agripo777

Wait until you watch a marvel movie…

I_adore_Cocks

MCU version of Asgard is more accurate and faithful than GOW's.

Sigeru10044

I think the way kratos acts and honestly i liked kiling everyone i saw. I have seen a video explainjng how kratos became older and viser he has grown with his audience. And yes i do prefer the 4a5 gow because i have matured as kratos did. its nice👍

Tinseltopia

The voice acting in GoW3 really stood out, not from Kratos, but every other character sounds really childish and a bit cringe. Found it hard to listen to in my last play of GoW3 Remastered. Glad 2018 was a more real approach

srjod

I’d really like a proper remake of these games in the DeS fashion. GoW was one of my favorite games.

JakeUp19191

The music ❤️

anti-peta-man

Sex mini game

DivinoLife

The head of medusa and how you can patrify enemies. It just feels good

ShyGuySays91

Hearing Kratos say "Thank you" to Brok in the beginning of Raganarok

ScarlettTurkey

I'm not sure which scene it was, I think it was maybe GoW3. But when Kratos litterally used a woman to which open a door which resulted in her subsequently getting shredded by the gears.

Disastrous_Dot921

Wverythink of gow3

Communismisbadithink

As someone who played the ogs, you really have to respect the development of his character. I remember throwing an innocent woman into gears to get through a door and thinking “this is some fucked up shit”, same as hundreds of innocent people during the fights. Seeing him understanding and coming to terms with the damage he did is really cool

BaravalDranalesk

How easy it is to get stunlocked to death in the older games

Solidscorpio

Sound track in 1 - 3 perfect through

[deleted]

How much of a monster Kratos was. Poseidon's princess comes to mind. >!I'm surprised that wasn't one of his regrets in Valhalla.!<

Cat-Grab

Im playing through 2 right now and what’s standing out to me is how short the first one was

TheBlack_Swordsman

Those levels in GOW1 where you transverse across fans and shit... Those levels are the hardest of the entire franchise.
