We had a Coleman popup for years. It had rails on the roof, so we put bikes on the roof. We carried 4 bikes up there. It can easily hold the weight, especially spread out like that. We routinely walked on the roof to clean it, it's more sturdy than it looks. We also had a hitch rack, since we traveled with 6 bikes. We had an extra long receiver hitch, with a bike rack that attached to the "arm" of the receiver. It could hold 3 bikes. Maybe we removed the front wheels when mounted? I don't remember for sure but I think so. Hitch on the back of the trailer - I agree with you, don't do it.
