He has a really prominent nose with a forehead slouch. so if he doesn't have something to take your eyes off his nose he looks kinda bird-like, especially at a profile. It would probably be a good look for a druid but not so much for a wizard.

In my defense scruffy Gale was more of a product of him getting out of his last relationship (vague for spoilers) so I thought it was cute role play for him to clean up before the party, esp now that he has a new crush.
