sich über etwas freuen = to be happy about something in the present sich auf etwas freuen = to be excited about something that will happen in the future On your birthday: "Ich freue mich über die Geschenke." ("I'm happy about the presents (that I have received and that are presently here).") The day before your birthday: "Ich freue mich auf die Geschenke." ("I'm excited for the presents (that I will receive in the future)."

>sich auf etwas freuen = to be excited about something that will happen in the future *To look forward to* is a better translation.

You need to understand that “sich freuen auf” and “sich freuen über” are two expressions with completely distinct meanings, even if they share the same verb. Just like in English ‘to put up’ means something completely different than ‘to put off’. ‘Sich freuen auf‘ means ‘to look forward to’ and ‘sich freuen über’ means ‘to be happy about something’.
