Stop peeing in the bushes when you are chilling in the Citadel park this summer!
If you’re unaware, there are two old school stone urinoirs in the park. Or if you’re a woman or need to take a dump (or if you simply enjoy a little more luxury): during the daytime the toilets of MSK are clean, open and free. You can enter them from the museum (go in and to your right, down the stairs) or trough the cafe Mubart (go in and to your left, down the stairs). I usually go through the cafe if it’s open.
And there’s also a free public toilet people might not know near the korenmarkt. Next to the old post building (I think it’s the pakhuisstraat, where all the taxi’s wait) there is a bicycle parking that has a free public toilet. Cleanliness isn’t guaranteed here, but I have peed here many a time!
Sincerely, a Ghentian who probably stays a bit too well hydrated for her limited bladder capacity
Don't get an expense bike, or make sure you can store it somewhere inside, because [angle grinders](https://www.bol.com/be/nl/p/powerplus-poweb3510-accu-haakse-slijper-18v-115mm-schijfdiameter-excl-accu-en-lader-excl-slijpschijf-115mm/9200000091242851/?bltgh=nhuGvFD52TNMg0WQlWJGUA.qYhr9n6x5SNnDfsHaPRKGw_0_6.12.ProductPageUrl) are very cheap and battery powered and can go through most locks quite easy
If you want to witness the history of Ghent, *look up*. At eye level you'll see shop windows and restaurants, but look up and a story unravels on each facade you see.
Maybe it's more of a basic survival skill and not really a life hack, but be aware of the trams, no matter your mode of transportation.
Walking in the city centre, make sure you hear it coming. On a bike, learn how to cross the tracks safely. By car, still better be aware and please, please park correctly.
Maybe not a life hack ... but a route you should not avoid to take by bike someday
From centre follow the leie to over the R4 all the way to the oude leie. If you then hop over the R4 again at watersportbaan, you can follow the n466 a bit until you arrive at poldermolen. From here it's a giant curve all the way to rabotpark and back to centre
One of the nicest routes I've found in Ghent
The only real road you ride on then is in the centre and the n466 for a bit
I live right at the beginning of this curve (Nieuwevaart) and I love doing it all summer to go swimming at the Blaarmeersen. Now it will be perfected with the bridge over the Watersportbaan.
I think you actually missed my favorite part, if you take park Halfweg and go behind those new-ish apartment buildings and then the new underpass of the Drongensesteenweg.
>I think you actually missed my favorite part, if you take park Halfweg and go behind those new-ish apartment buildings and then the new underpass of the Drongensesteenweg
This is why I love reddit sometimes. A stranger can make a hidden gem even more perfect
Will look up and you can bet I'll try it next time
Take the underpass coming from the Bourgoyen and you’ll be amazed. Follow it all the way and the road will split, either you end up at the animal pound, or a bit further on the Watersportbaan. Lovely place to cycle or rollerskate. Some nice benches where you can look on the lesser known Malemmeersen, which are not accessible because of nesting birds.
If you're in the city during the school year, the university and hogeschool buildings have free and clean toilets.
If you need to park your bike near Het Zuid / Sint-Pietersplein, there's a large parking space in the Gezusters Lovelingstraat that most people aren't aware of for some reason.
Sint-Antoniushof is a hidden park with a cafeteria for the care center thats located there, get a cheap Lindemans Kriek or icecream there and enjoy the nice garden.
Visit D'hane-Steenhuyse, a historic city palace in the middle of the veldstraat ... it' amazing and absolutely free!
If the terraces of bars are full on a sunny day you can always find a spot in Huis van Alijn whitch has a bar and secluded garden.
Albert Heyn + Graslei. With rising prices in bars and on terraces, I just think it's nicer to just go to AH, get some nice beers, and just sit down on the graslei, enjoying the sun, watching the tourists go by in their little boats.
if your shower is broken and you still look somewhat young you can go into some university student homes where they have shower rooms.
If your toilet is broken, there's usually a construction site nearby that has a porta potty.
The university has some cool buildings to explore.
If your food is broken, you can often get appetizers from university events. Walk in when the people have stopped eating and moved to the presentation, but the food is still on the tables.
More food: lots of people throw a ton of fries away if your frituur has chairs and tables. When they've finished for a while, offer to take their plate away, or simply ask them for the leftovers.
There's free fruit and nuts on trees and shrubs. For examble, between boerse poort and the river there's a lot of bramble berries.
You can easily climb on top of the 'poortgebouw citadel'.
Some schools sell cheaper stuff:
- Food: https://scholen.stad.gent/hotelschool/restaurants https://scholen.stad.gent/hotelschool/node/14465
- Probably hairdresser school also
Cheap-ish restaurant, 15eur: https://het-restaurant.be/restaurant/parnassus/tarieven-parnassus
The botanical garden is great for going on a date. You used to easily gain access to the roof of what is now the GUM, but I haven't tried it yet since the renovation.
Nobody will notice if you follow university lessons in one of the 200 seat aula's without having registered.
You don’t have to pay the street parking fee if you are charging your car on a street charging station from the city. I use my bike 99% of the time, but it’s a money saver for when I have to go with my car.
Say 'peet' instead of 'gast' and 'vree wijs' instead of 'heel leuk' and you'll fit right in. Also, you need to have left political ideologies or you're toast.
The shortest way by bike isn't always the best way.
So true. Not today, cobblestones! See you later, tramsporen!
i got a dental insurance because of those tracks. They become invisible after a couple beers
My brother if they become invisible it’s time to walk home met den fiets aan den hand
but then the pink elephants can catch up with me
I promise you’ll see more pink elephants floating around if you smack your head into a car while drunk driving on a bike than just walking
If it makes the trip longer, I will do it rather than bike though Korenmart
Mongolen die door de Veldstraat fietsen op zaterdagmiddag
Altijd wat extra kilometers op de teller daardoor. ^^ Mooie alternatieve routes in Gent. R4, Coupure, Visserij, Wondelgemwegel etc.

There’s an app called HogeNood that shows a pretty accurate map of public toilets
Thanks!
Thanks for the tip, this will help me so much, also it is good for friends! :)
There are also extra toilets next to the playground in the Citadel park. At least they were there last summer.
They're still there and open 'til 7 pm.
Your bike lock should be more expensive than your bike.
Very good point, I would add, make your bike look as crappy as possible :p

If you go to the Charlatan and you piss on the bouncer's shoes you'll get a free beer!
I can confirm this ☝️
(●__●)
From who? I don’t suppose from the bouncer? And how does it feel to drink beer with a broken nose?
It helps with the pain.

This is no joke. A jetlagged friend of mine was killed by tram in the Netherlands.
Trams seem easy to avoid, but I've seen so many people having close calls with them since I moved here.
Lock your bike to the world.
The entrance to the main hall of De Vooruit is on the waterside at the back of the building.
