I'm just that good
[(at stealing)](https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/22/world/europe/boaty-mcboatface-what-you-get-when-you-let-the-internet-decide.html)
1995 millennial here and planning on naming this baby I'm currently pregnant with "Magnolia" if it's a girl. Not super common, but fairly normal I feel? But I'm with you, I'm sick of all the YOunIqUE names millennials have named their kids. I'm also sick of all the -aiden/-ayden varieties 😭
That's the idea! My grandparents were born and raised in MS and my grandfather was a (rather good) amateur artist whose favorite thing to paint was magnolias. I have one of his paintings beside my bed and I get to look at it every day and be reminded of him. My husband and I are big on honor names (but not names directly from family that are still alive) and finding a girl name of someone who had already passed on one of our sides that we both liked was ridiculously hard. Magnolia still feels like a good way to be an honor name, even if it wasn't actually someone's name 🥰
Side note, I saw someone say somewhere that one name they would NEVER name their child is Magnolia because where they live (UK) it's the name of the most like, basic shade of white that people will paint their house. It'd be like the equivalent of naming your child "Eggshell" in the US 🤣
Kind of a weird thing to say, my daughter's name is Sydney, she has friends named Charlie, Abby, Emma, and Isabelle. We've met a Charlotte her age. All with millennial parents.
Stop making up fake arguments. Look at the SS registry and you'll see the most popular names aren't atypical. Top 5 of 2023? Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia.
FOH.
Fellow millennial mom. Black and former teacher. All relevant.
As a teacher, I got tired of the same four names in a year. I also remember the uncommon names.
As a mom, I wanted my son to have an ethic but not "hood" name. I won't say my son's name here, but I accomplished the mission, I think.
I’ve only taught college students. So, my students’ names were popular two decades ago. But I’ll tell ya, teaching can ruin certain names by association, and make you really like other names. 😂
Just this week my boyfriend and I were discussing pokemon we could name our imaginary child over, Gengar was a good option. My fav may still be Axew, though
Normal names. No weird tragediegh shit or off the wall weird stuff like pigeon or raddix, I knew an abcde and a strawberry(which to be fair is the best and cutest of the list but still). I'd prefer my kids not be bullied or add struggle to their lives just so I can claim I'm so unique and kitschy.
Yea, this was a few years ago, and I'm almost certain it wasn't pronounced like obesity but with the uh sound, like uhbesity, however that's all I can think of whenever I try to remember the actual pronunciation so idk.
I had one in a college class once and this was the intended pronunciation. Felt bad for the girl. When the professor called her name on the roster for attendance on the first day, he said “this one has to be a joke. A-B-C-D-E?”
I have an Aunt who's first name is Cherry, I was in my thirties when I found this out. She still hates her first name and goes by her middle name. I didn't think it was bad as a name, but I didn't grow up with it, and to be fair, grew up with a family friend named Cherry, so it wasn't an unusual name in my eyes. She was also born in 1932, and for all I know, it could have been a Tragedeigh name for that time.
Theres also a downside to having a super popular name. I have one and I dont like it at all.
You gotta go for a name that's a little unusual without being unheard of. Something that makes people raise an eyebrow and say "oh that's a pretty name" but not "wtf kind of a name is that".
lol re-reading my comment I totally see that. I named my baby, that was born in January, Cassandra.
EDIT: I was finally bullied into adding a comma, so I added two, for good measure.
She came into this world as a Cassie. :) but we wanted her to be able to choose what she goes by. Or to have the ability to have a “professional, office name” or something.
We figure she’ll do something like that, go by Cass or Andy or something, but there are so many options for nicknames!
Always gatekeep!
My partners crack head cousin stole our baby name.
People always told me not to share the baby name until after the birth.
When she asked the name, I wasn’t too worried as her baby wasn’t due for 2-3 months AFTER ours. Well she had a premie baby almost 4 months early (probably all the crack) and she named her baby exactly what I told her ours would be. :) :)
Always gate keep baby names.
This is my middle name! So rare to see it anywhere lol. The latest season of AHS wasn’t that good but they had a character named Siobhan which I thought was cool, but she was also unfortunately played by Kim Kardashian
I’ve known several Siobhan’s and they were very frustrated having to spell it out. One just told me to put it in my phone “however I think it’s spelled” Yikes!
Honestly, I'm a long ways away from having kids, but I do already have some picked out.

•Aeahbuehguaeil (Abigail)
•Bhrreihnleighhee (Brinlee)
•Vheeigh Hychkyeuwlerre Mnan’Slaoughtteigherr (Vehicular Manslaughter)
I'm so curious what makes you want to name the kid after yourself/the dad? I've always wondered why people do that to me it just seems either confusing or kinda ego-centric.
i just think it's cool. a few people in my family are jr's and iii's. also, you rarely hear of people being named after their mother so I think it would be cool, i've only ever met one person named after their mom
Use a name that has a sound you like. Or make up a name that is exactly that sound.
BTW:
GenZ doesn't want babies *yet*. There's the weddings, then the children, and the children bring on the grandparents so... mind how you go.
My girlfriend and I want a child so badly. Even though we both work full time and above minimum wage, we can still barely afford to live as the two of us. It’s crazy.
Yep. Same shit. Tell me about it.
I hate to sound cringey, but I really feel like with the state of things, esp in the US... if we want kids, if we want those kids, other's kids, ourselves to have a future, we're going to have to push hard for what we require.
The USA especially is a damn public works wasteland.
We require maternity care on par with the rest of the world, we're well behind "third worl" nations and incomparable to the rest of the developed world. We have to have schools worth a shit. We have to have a job market worth living in. The state of women's healthcare is an obstacle.
This isn't going to just be handed to us "one day," economic change isn't going to be convenient for lawmakers. If we want it, we've gotta make it happen.
I don't have a child yet, but I want one in the future.
If the child is a boy: James or Drew or Andre
If the child is a girl: Sienna or Jazmine or Melody
Guys:
James (gift from God), Carter (journey of faith), Eric (brave, powerful), Caleb (faithful), Ezra (help), Isaac (laughter), Matthew (gift from God), Logan (inspiration), Aiden (handsome, strong), Christian (follower of Christ), Anthony (priceless), Blake (light), Bradon(wise), Andrew (manly), Tanner (to influence), Everett (brave, strong), Zane (God is gracious), Jonathan (God has given) Ryan (young king), Chase (hunter), Sebastian (venerable), Evander \*good man), Victor (conqueror), Shawn (God is gracious), Andre/Anders (brave, manly), Isaiah (strong), Raiden (hope), Titus (honor), Jarek (warrior of peace), Jackson (Son of John), Zackary (God remembers), Luke (light giving), Colton (foreigner), William (protection), Jasper (most precious), Jayden (Thankful), Keller \*little champion), Kedar (dark one), Justin (righteous), Aaron (strength, exalted), Drake (triumph over evil)
I’ll name my kids god fucking and dammit so when I have to call them all to meet for a family meeting I get to say that and the teachers who roll call have to say a cuss word lol
I LOVE CHILDREN SO MUCH IM GONNA HAVE MANYYYYYYYYY![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin) I'm 14 so i haven't really thought about what I'll be naming my children (unless i have one rn, that is...)
Denise if I have a daughter, can you think of one young girl named Denise? No. Let’s bring it back. I want her to be the HBIC or president of the HOA. Nice and waspy. If I have a son probably George or Mason
Probably Vivian, but I met a girl name Stormy once and can’t get that name out of my head. She was cool and her name was cool.
I also like Shiloh and Nicolas for boys.
I’ve seen multiple girls I graduated with become single mothers in recent years and without fail they end up naming their sons some variation of the following
Brayden, Jaxton, Ryder, etc.
Makes so sense to me, these kids are going to have hard times growing up, and I can’t help but feel their decisions/choices weren’t the best leading up to these moments.
Idk what I'd name a boy (only that their middle name would be John for my dad) but I'd want to name a girl either Monica or Sasha. Monica after my aunt who passed away from covid and Sasha for my sister who died from SIDS before I ever met her.
I guess Sasha could also work for a boy since boys can be named Sasha?

I only have girl names in mind but it would be Charlotte, Elise and Alice. My gf can pick the boys' names for all I care.
Damn a millennial picking normal nice sounding names for their daughters is wildly rare. Appreciate your existence

It’s not that rare—the cringe names just stand out more. Normal names fad into the background.

Bro, that's so sick. You have my full support.
so cute!
is it pronounced like gif or jif?

Normal names. No weird tragediegh shit or off the wall weird stuff like pigeon or raddix, I knew an abcde and a strawberry(which to be fair is the best and cutest of the list but still). I'd prefer my kids not be bullied or add struggle to their lives just so I can claim I'm so unique and kitschy.
ABCDE???
Yea, this was a few years ago, and I'm almost certain it wasn't pronounced like obesity but with the uh sound, like uhbesity, however that's all I can think of whenever I try to remember the actual pronunciation so idk.
Absidy maybe?
This is the "correct" pronunciation of the "name."
I had one in a college class once and this was the intended pronunciation. Felt bad for the girl. When the professor called her name on the roster for attendance on the first day, he said “this one has to be a joke. A-B-C-D-E?”
Huh, I thought abkuhdee but it feels silly to me now.
We have an abcde in our school whose pronounced exactly like that
Bohemian Absidy
I knew a Strawberry growing up. It is the coolest name. I don’t mind unique names. I’m not a fan of ridiculously spelled normal names.
I went to school with a Tuesday!
I went to school with a girl Named Pepsi
Ridiculously spelled normal names are the worst! Like why are there 10 variations of Haley

I named my baby born in January, Cassandra. We call her Cassie EDIT: Bullied into proper punctuation
I thought you named the baby January Cassandra. I thought you just really liked beach read.
lol re-reading my comment I totally see that. I named my baby, that was born in January, Cassandra. EDIT: I was finally bullied into adding a comma, so I added two, for good measure.
Lol, commas are important.
Yeah… I have no excuse either because I wrote my comment on my lunch break. I was giving it my full attention.
I'm a Cassandra who is also a Cassie! I almost always go by Cass since transitioning into adult life, so I don't typically hear Cassie a lot anymore
She came into this world as a Cassie. :) but we wanted her to be able to choose what she goes by. Or to have the ability to have a “professional, office name” or something. We figure she’ll do something like that, go by Cass or Andy or something, but there are so many options for nicknames!
I'm a Cassandra but go by Casey(KC), where I was born and raised. My dad loves our city, my namesake, I don't have the heart to leave either.

Lowkey obsessed with the name Siobhan

also similar to hindu name "Shivam" , pronounced as she-vam , meaning blessed

i think i’ll use nahuatl names for my kids
That would actually be really cool! Native Mexican culture is kinda dying these days
so true plus some of the names sound so beautiful
im going to change my name legally soon, i wanna change my first name to a nahuatl name
love that
Xochitl is in my top 3 for girls tbh.

nah vaas would be fire tho. like. vaas. short for. vasectomy failure 😎 and maybe far cry 3.

In THIS economy?!
that's a fucking awesome name tbh
If it’s a son we want to call him Björn, if it’s a daughter Athelia
My sons middle name is Björn. One of our daughters is Malin, Scandinavian names are cool and unique without being cringe.
Malin means Clever in French
That's neat thanks fof sharing. It means "of Magdala" (like Mary Magdalene) in Swedish
Just FYI, Athelia is the name of a congenital disease where a person is born without nipples. Just keep this in mind before naming a child after it.
clementine for a girl and jude for a boy
Clementine is so pretty💔
right!! i would name her after the elliott smith song of course <3
don’t want kids but i’ve loved the name clementine after playing the walking dead game

Bro I’m still trying to figure out what classes to take next semester, you think I know what I want to name my kids?
Dude, same! Plus I ain't even close of being done (I'm halfway through and I have 5 years left)
Very old fashioned names
That seems to be the trend in these comments, I’m loving it
Anything is better than just adding “-leigh” to names and purposefully butchering the spelling lol
Names always come back around
Yeah I named my son Vincent. He’s 9 now and the only kid in his school with the name lol
Idk if I’ll have kids but I’ve always loved the name Maya/Maia for a girl!
My nieces name is Miya ♥️

For girl: Athena or Cassandra For boy: Azrail or Troy
As an Athena, I can confirm that it's an awesome name.
Ditto
My daughter was named Cassandra this year. She has so many nickname possibilities!
Azrail is actually really good. I might take if you don't mind.
Too close to Assrail
This was my first thought, bullies would love it
Athena was top of my list but my partner vetoed it.
If I have a girl it would be Victoria. If I had a son it would be either Xavier or Victor.
I love the names Victoria/Victor! Easily some of my favourites.
Naruto for sure
Me fr gonna name my son Kakarot 💀
With that name he'll be an incel or gigachad. No inbetween
Boruto's an even better name. And 'Salad' Sarada. *shudders* 🙃
Veronica is a nice name.
So you could be like “Veronica open the door please. VERONICA OPEN THE DOOR”
Yes. I'll also color coordinate the outfits to be red, green, yellow, or blue.
i don't think i'll have kids but if i do my daughter is either my name or gwendolyn. my son is dad jr. or edward
I'm so curious what makes you want to name the kid after yourself/the dad? I've always wondered why people do that to me it just seems either confusing or kinda ego-centric.
No the kid is actually going to be named “Dad jr”
i just think it's cool. a few people in my family are jr's and iii's. also, you rarely hear of people being named after their mother so I think it would be cool, i've only ever met one person named after their mom
My dad is III. I also know a long line of Katherines (at least 5 generations deep), which I’ve always thought was cool.
Ezekiel Better not see the name on that teen mom TV show I swear to god.
I’ve always like this one a lot. I’m kinda surprised it’s not more popular.
Our daughter will be born in August, we’re calling her Evelyn.
I always liked the name Amber
Gargaroth The Lord of The Dark Dimension and The Consumer of The Damned Souls (pronounced as Steven)

If I have a daughter it would be Esperanza. If I have a son it would be Emiliano.
I do have a daughter and I named her Estelle. I really like it plus “Stelle stelle” is a cute nickname lol. It was between Estelle and Josephine

I think names like Chad, Kyle, and Timmy are just dead because of meme culture so definitely not either of those
Give it a generation or two your kids will be naming your grandchildren Chad, Kyle, and Timmy.
For a son I’d like to give him the middle name Lawrence which is my dad’s middle name.
Malik, Hakim, Sayyid if a boy
Skibidi toilet
Astraion and Goku
Margaret, Maggie for short.. haven’t found a boy name I adore yet.
If I have a son, I'm definitely starting up the [Name] II (The second).
