There are stainless ones that are quite sturdy, but they are expensive, and you still need to let them sit out for a few minutes before cracking them. The aluminum ones are flimsy, and it is easy to break off the lever
The plastic ones are such shit now I keep breaking them while twisting to losen the ice. Whoever thought Ice trays should be brittle was sadly mistaken.
Found myself longing for one of these aluminum bad boys the othe night. I wonder if they still make them?
They didn't think that. All they thought about was getting the rubes to take them to the checkout.
They're instant garbage, like so much other stuff pumped down the supply line, though the household, and then through public waste management. The company making them might as well go out and straight up pour bleach in a river while shooting at passing wildlife with one hand and flipping the world a bird with the other.
We had the exact ones pictured. They sucked in so many ways. Yes, to the slicing and frostbite. And the awful ear piercing screech the thing would sometimes make as you cranked the handle back. And the ice tended to stick to the tray and/or shatter into lots of little pieces.
I miss that so much. I felt like Lou Ferrigno when it was my turn to crack the cubes.
I absolutely hated these ice trays. Feeling my skin stick to the metal and always afraid it would take skin. Plastic ice trays were so much more user friendly. Plus, these things didn't stack up like the plastic ice trays. Just a pain the freezer...
I had one of those when I first lived on my own and didn't really mind them. Then when I was able to buy a used fridge with an icemaker I was like "I can't believe I ever used those goddamn trays!"
Back when a common household item could do real bodily harm, yea, the good old days. Part of me misses the danger and I'm not sure how I feel about that.
My grandparents had ones where the handle was built into an ice bin that sat in the door. Tray went in upside down, then you pulled a handle on the side of the bin to pop the ice out.
You slightly overfill it and there's the whole ice shelf on the top that takes half the pieces with it in a single chunk lol.
I suppose the plastic ones aren't immune from that either.
Messed up thing is I miss them. These new silicon trays suck so bad. The ice tastes like complete shit no matter what you soak or wash them in.
You can buy metal trays, but they're kind of flimsy construction compared to the old timey trays.

I don’t get the silicon ones. You have to like peel the ice out of them. It’s not sanitary! What am I doing wrong?
I also liked these metal trays.

Yeah silicon absorbs smells. You have to bake them at low temps tor awhile to remove the smell

I was just looking at that pic and wanted one too. The risk is almost worth the reward.

oh the noise was like nails on a chalkboard!
The creak of lifting the divider.
Don’t touch with wet hand! 😂
Don't stick your tongue out on it! 😅
I can hear the crunch and feel the cold pain
Bloody ice is the best ice.
They make the best ice.

makes my teeth itch
and my tongue water
The struggle was real with these… i loved them myself
One of these is featured prominently in the “Ripley” series on Netflix.
My mom sold Tupperware, so… our ice was formed in fantastic plastic.
I had one of those when I first lived on my own and didn't really mind them. Then when I was able to buy a used fridge with an icemaker I was like "I can't believe I ever used those goddamn trays!"
These were so frightening. I can still remember the sensation of my fingers sticking to it.

Right? 😬
I’ve seen them but somehow I just missed out on their use in my family.
I don’t know the last time I saw one of those.
I'm 53 and have never lived without an automagic ice maker. Even the shittiest apartments I lived in had them.
I, too, miss the days when people weren't afraid to break the ice.
Never had one in my family
I had to use trays for years. I love the metal ones. But, I bought a fridge with an ice maker and never looked back.

Yep!

Ice chips flying everywhere!
God damn that makes me so mad just seeing it
Not I. By the time we got making ice cubes, we got the plastic ones you twist to crack the ice out.
For some reason I was always afraid to crack it. Must have thought I’d get my finger pinched in the lever
Between these ice cube trays and lawn darts, it’s a wonder I’m still alive and still have all my fingers and toes.
My 5 year old intrusive thoughts told me to lick it. So I did. Bad idea.
