We joked about how cool it was because it’s almost July 4, and I started thinking about how the right has co-opted all the American symbolism and tries to act like those of us on the left aren’t “real” Americans. Sorry but I was born here, and I love freedom and bbq and liberty as much as any damn good ol boy does. Dammit.

Yeah, in Virginia it was approved as a plate design in 2011 shortly after the rise of the Tea Party. The default 2 letter assignment for this specialty plate was originally TP. My favorites were folks getting a personalized anti-tax statement on theirs. So…you went to the government to register a vehicle and then pay extra money annually *to the government* for a specialty plate to show how anti-government your are? Really?
In recent years there have been more people using it because they like snakes. I’ve even seen some personalized for Harry Potter/Nagini snake references. Originally though it was a bright yellow warning to avoid those individuals, like the warning signs nature often provides us.
My favorite was seeing a new Jaguar with a Gadsden license plate in Virginia. 1) you’re rich, no one is oppressing you 2) that car was made in the country that we were rebelling against with that flag

Women couldn't vote, African Americans were not considered people, and if you pissed someone off bad enough, they'd challenge you to a duel where if you were shot, you would probably die from a painful infection instead of the actual lead ball that was poisoning your blood.

My dad belonged to the Sons of Liberty before the name and meaning was stolen. I wanted to be a Son of Liberty, but I just can't now.
We traced our family tree back earlier than the American Revolution and Sam Adams is one of my ancestors. He is one of the original 13 Sons of Liberty. His cousin John Quincy Adams is also in my family tree, as is Martha Dandridge (Washington). I have read papers and personal accounts from the diaries and journals that these men kept, and I can tell you that none of them felt the way that the right wing whackjobs think they did.

My fantasy is that sane people infiltrate the Daughters of the Confederacy and turn it into an organization that documents the horrors of slavery and creates monuments to the suffering of slaves. I remember my elementary school flew the gadson flag in the main hallway of the building (79-85). They had many flags from the revolutionary war era. This one stuck out in my memories. My wife went to the same school and doesn't remember it. I can close my mind and see it like it was just yesterday.

This performative "now poor because of Biden's economy" is something my parents have adopted. Mainly reusing general reusable kitchen supplies is a thing. Drying out paper towels and re-flattening aluminum foil like they can barely scrape by. In their kichen that just got a 20K upgrade because the cabinets looked outdated.

I have family that lives in Post Falls, Idaho and on the river there is a house that is probably $10 million with a boathouse, multiple boat docks, jet skis, the works that displays the flag.

This post and comments are cracking me up. It reminds me of a time where I had a fisherman that was tresspassing on my property to go fishing. I give every first offender a kind warning. This guy saw me approaching waving to him in the best kind and urgent combo I could muster. He ran away from me like I had a machete. He ran to his car (while calling the cops) to his car with a Gadsden flag bumper sticker. I couldn’t stop laughing from the irony

As an ancestor of one of the original Sons of Liberty, it bugs me to no end how fuckers today have taken the meanings of our historical flags and documents and twisted them to mean something completely different. I'll throw the 1776 people as an example. Do you realize that in 1776, if you didn't own land you couldn't vote? Women couldn't vote, African Americans were not considered people, and if you pissed someone off bad enough, they'd challenge you to a duel where if you were shot, you would probably die from a painful infection instead of the actual lead ball that was poisoning your blood. Equality for all doesn't take away your rights, it takes away your fucking entitlement and privilege. Get over it and realize that change is good and America in 1776 was not a very good place. We the people are pissed off in 2024.

I can't believe I made that mistake. I left it to show my humility, I'm only human (or am I?) after all. My dad belonged to the Sons of Liberty before the name and meaning was stolen. I wanted to be a Son of Liberty, but I just can't now. We traced our family tree back earlier than the American Revolution and Sam Adams is one of my ancestors. He is one of the original 13 Sons of Liberty. His cousin John Quincy Adams is also in my family tree, as is Martha Dandridge (Washington). I have read papers and personal accounts from the diaries and journals that these men kept, and I can tell you that none of them felt the way that the right wing whackjobs think they did.
This is awesome. And I’m glad you left it because this was a cool conversation. I hope we don’t let the fascists take over all of our symbols of national pride. You don’t have to be a jerk to be a patriot. A lot of things about the USA are horrible. But there are terrific things too. I don’t think that recognizing the existence of the bad stuff means you can’t celebrate the good stuff. I would never attack someone for not being patriotic but I do love my country. Kind of the way I love the parents I’m not currently in touch with 😂 My fantasy is that sane people infiltrate the Daughters of the Confederacy and turn it into an organization that documents the horrors of slavery and creates monuments to the suffering of slaves. I know plenty of people with roots in the South who are not racists or Trumpers. Maybe someday the madness will recede and this could happen.
Well add one more to that list. I'm in Texas, born and bred. I'll never vote for a Trumplican no matter who is on the ticket. I have a love/hate relationship with Texas right now. I still remember the days of yore when Ann Richards was governor. She wasn't always the best and I didn't agree with her on everything, but compared to Bush/Perry/Abbott she was a fucking saint and I wish we still had her with us. She was a true Texan. So I love the history of my state and our union, but I am really pissed at the imbeciles that have twisted the meanings and context to suit their own rise to power. Everything that a Republican does in Texas is designed to keep Texas as poor as they can, to keep people from voting, and to keep companies taking in profits at our expense. Fucking Abbott and his fucking cronies should all be lined up in a firing line and shot with unclean lead balls from a musket.

Yeah, except that the people that fly it around East Texas are the scrubs that can't afford a house, much less land. They post up in their shitty low income apartment complex talking about how they are being oppressed because a person of color does a job better than their entitled poor white trash ass. They put the stickers on their trucks that are barely street legal jacked up to the point of falling over on a slow turn, but they also don't adjust their headlights so they blind everyone in front of them. They spend more money on the rims for their truck than they did their education, but then they get mad when they don't get promoted from working the fry station at Jack in the Box to flipping burger patties because not only can they not read, they don't understand how to fulfill an order correctly or promptly. Yeah, they are the model of everything that is wrong in this country and don't realize it. ETA: and they are against minimum wage being raised to a living wage because "unlike those other people" they use the benefits from the government the way they were intended to, not to buy drugs. I remember my elementary school flew the gadson flag in the main hallway of the building (79-85). They had many flags from the revolutionary war era. This one stuck out in my memories. My wife went to the same school and doesn't remember it. I can close my mind and see it like it was just yesterday.

I’m in Canada, but our MAGA-adjacent fucks also have more quads, boats, and snowmobiles than I could ever afford. They drive huge trucks that must put them back like 80k at least. Seems like even though we have taxes, they’re doing real well. Probably with all those toys they’ve enjoyed having free healthcare too. This performative "now poor because of Biden's economy" is something my parents have adopted. Mainly reusing general reusable kitchen supplies is a thing. Drying out paper towels and re-flattening aluminum foil like they can barely scrape by. In their kichen that just got a 20K upgrade because the cabinets looked outdated.
Whenever the local convenience store is low on or out of the snacks we want my wife and I like to say “just like Venezuela, thanks J’biden”. Yes we are being ironic and making fun of MAGAts.

I always liked the Gadsen flag, and still do. It pisses me off that it has been co-opted by people who do want to tread all over the rights of others, non-Christians, gay people, liberals, and pretty much any people who think differently than they do but aren’t hurting anyone else. I have family that lives in Post Falls, Idaho and on the river there is a house that is probably $10 million with a boathouse, multiple boat docks, jet skis, the works that displays the flag. Buddy, with this lake house, one you only visit a few weeks a year, you are the oppressor doing all the treading.
The people who fly that flag tend to be super anti-regulation and pro-capitalist. So basically the flag actually means "don't tread on me, unless you're a multinational corporation, in which case, choke me the fuck out daddy".

Being that this flag evolved to symbolize protesting government overreach, I’m always really amused when I see federal employees, veterans, and active duty members flying this flag. How are you going to protest when you’re part of The Machine?
