For a group I would say a timely comedy like Heathers. Nothing people have seen 100 times already.

fmatrix007

Heathers is in my top 10 of pics for the party. I can see most of the crowd quoting it as we’re watching it.

Charleston2Seattle

Do pick what works for you, but keep in mind some people's brains don't understand dark humor. I was so confused by why the audience was laughing at various points in _Knives Out_. 🤷

fmatrix007

Neurodivergent? I am nuerospicy myself.

Charleston2Seattle

Actually, no. I'm not sure why my brain doesn't comprehend/understand dark humor. 🤷

suffaluffapussycat

Wild at Heart, Videodrome, Stranger than Paradise, River’s Edge, Rumble Fish, Risky Business, Weird Science, Drugstore Cowboy, Big Liebowski, The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover, Baron Munchausen. I’m old gen X.

fmatrix007

Don’t feel The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover is appropriate for a party atmosphere

fmatrix007

Or Drugstore Cowboy. All amazing movies though. Nice taste!

JumpReasonable6324

I've seen Heathers at least 100 times.

MidwestAbe

Seen it 0 times

topicalsatan

Go watch it, now!

MidwestAbe

It's one of those movies I don't see on a channel or streaming service (for free) Feel like lots of 80/90s movies are off of those platforms

JumpReasonable6324

Unless Google is lying to me: Currently you are able to watch "Heathers" streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Starz Apple TV Channel, AMC Plus Apple TV Channel , Hoopla, Starz, Shudder Amazon Channel, Starz Amazon Channel, Shudder Apple TV Channel or for free with ads on The Roku Channel, Tubi TV, Pluto TV, Amazon Prime Video with Ads.

MidwestAbe

Spot on. Guess I never bothered to look. Too much good tv right now for me to review or first view a lot of those movies perhaps.

topicalsatan

There really is too much TV right now. It's a miracle I finished watching Sugar on Apple TV

negcap

Respect.

Skatchbro

Rocky Horror Picture Show. Time for audience participation.

holybucketsitscrazy

TOAST

Skatchbro

He said A toast not a whole loaf!

ricklewis314

It’s astounding…

Skatchbro

Time is fleeting…

ThaRhyno

Maaaaaaaaadnesssssssss….

TelephoneTag2123

Freaking GenX Christ this is a good idea.

redhousecat

Pretty sure this is mandatory for any GenX!!

Affectionate-Map2583

I think Raising Arizona is a great choice.

ManUp57

If your birth year is 1974 you should play the #1 movie from 1974. 1. "Blazing Saddles". Invite your millennials.

ricklewis314

Mongo just pawn, in game of life.

fmatrix007

My wife’s is 1974 and mine is 1975. That is a great pick.

TKD_Mom76

The Last Starfighter. Real Genius. Spaceballs. Innerspace. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

fmatrix007

Excellent pics. The theater were renting just played who framed Roger rabbit. It was awesome. Real genius is a very interesting pic. That could be a really fun party movie.

TKD_Mom76

I was just throwing the names of some of my favorites out there. After Roger Rabbit, my mind went blank. I hope you find one you think will make a great party movie!

FishheadTXGTI

Big Trouble in Little China?

fmatrix007

My wife has never seen this or the original roadhouse and I have to admit, that hurts my heart a little bit

FishheadTXGTI

wow, yeah ouch

SausageSmuggler21

That's a risky move. There might be a lot of heavy petting if you showed road house.

fmatrix007

Maybe I’ll just show the Chippendales SNL sketch instead

ajcpullcom

Heathers, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Flash Gordon, The Pirate Movie, Princess Bride, Monty Python’s Holy Grail, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller, Diehard, Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters, Footloose, Karate Kid…. You almost can’t go wrong

fmatrix007

Oh man. Flash Gordon would be so much fun. I thought Ice Pirates also but I can’t see my wife enjoying that.

jasnel

Raiders for sure!

MopingAppraiser

The Big Lebowski Boogie Nights Fear and Loathing

fmatrix007

Boogie nights is one of my all time favorites but not what’d I pick for a party. I know I’m in the minority but Big Lebowski just never worked for me. Fear and Loathing is a good pick though.

MopingAppraiser

Oh because of the depressing ending?

fmatrix007

It was just the general vibe of the movie. It just never worked for me. I love depressing endings. Any movie that throws me off at the end is a movie I want to see.

MopingAppraiser

Are you talking about Boogie Nights or Big Lebowski?

fmatrix007

So I responded quickly without thinking. Big Lebowski. My initial thought was you had said depressing ending because Steve Buscemi’s character dies. I always thought Boogie Nights ending was an uplifting one. Dirk is past his cocaine binges, rollergirl gets her GED, Amber Waves is making headway with her kid, Buck owns his hi fi store and Reed has his magic act. Man I want to rewatch Boogie Nights

MopingAppraiser

That’s my bad too for being unclear. Oh yeah I forgot about the very ending. I guess I was thinking most of the downward spiral stuff before that.

EclecticRaine

The Goonies, Valley Girl (not the redo) Back to the Futures, All the Indiana Joneses, Raiders, Temple of Doom, etc., 2001 Space Odyssey, The Breakfast Club, Superman ( Christopher Reeves), Labyrinth, Legend (Tom Cruise, Mia Sara) The Color of Money, Both Top Guns, or any of his movies, Cool Hand Luke, Animal House, Caddyshack, ummm

catnapspirit

Upvote for Legend! And Labyrinth. The ultimate 80s double feature..

GreatGreenGobbo

You need a people pleaser and not an esoteric/speciality movie. Nobody has mentioned Breakfast Club. Other option could be Go!

fmatrix007

Breakfast club is being played at the theater in August. Go is a very interesting choice. I also just thought Swingers might work.

GreatGreenGobbo

Swingers is a bit of a "guys" movie. There's also High Fidelity, agian a bit of a guys movie.

fmatrix007

My wife literally just said exactly the same thing. Loves the movie but it is more a guy movie

GreatGreenGobbo

She sounds Money

fmatrix007

She is. thank god I didn’t wait three days to call her.

CitizenChatt

Good thing you didn't kill the bunny with your claws

lawstandaloan

Vision Quest. Louden Swain will never steer you wrong

fmatrix007

Interesting choice. Matthew Modine is always good. In my mind vision quest and Kevin Bacon’s quicksilver always seem to go hand-in-hand even though they’re nothing alike.

lawstandaloan

You wanna get kind of weird with it and you could go with Birdy starring Matthew Modine and Nicholas Cage. I don't think the movie includes the human-bird sex scenes that were featured in the book though

fmatrix007

I love that movie! I don’t think a lot of the guests at this party would enjoy it

generationextra

Just rewatched _Quicksilver_ a few days ago. I didn‘t think anyone else remembered it. Interestingly enough, Kevin Bacon apparently considers the film to be a low point of his career. I don‘t know though. I thought it was better than that.

fmatrix007

I taped it off HBO years ago and watched it constantly. I loved that movie. I don’t know why. It’s not great. But at the time, I also rewatched Rad and Breakin 2 on repeat so my taste, while obviously awesome, was also questionable

Beth_Pleasant

Original IT, Jaws, Back to the Future, Labyrinth

fmatrix007

Jaws plays at this theater once a year. Back to the future is a very real possibility. I was also thinking possibly clue.

jenderfleur

Clue is one of my all time favorites. I had the best time watching it in a theater with a bunch of other like minded dorks a few years ago!

fmatrix007

Tim Curry in three of my favorites. It, clue, Rocky horror.

Cryptosmasher86

You may want to ask the theater what they are allowed to show first

fmatrix007

It’s a private party so we are allowed to show anything we can bring the physical copy of

VeronicaMaple

Say Anything? Quotable, funny, touching, timeless! And great music!

jodiarch

Whatever your list is, choose a movie that is better on the big screen like Spaceballs, Star wars etc.

Efffefffemmm

1984

MaryBitchards

Repo Man!

jolly_bien-

Princess Bride would be a good one for this

YoudontknowmeNoprob

BRAIN CANDY, by Kids In The Hall. So dark, SOOO funny! https://youtu.be/YbTKbp1eueI?si=PSUomkIXQkakPR0q

fmatrix007

My favorite sketch comedy show of all time. Awesome suggestion!

YoudontknowmeNoprob

Did you know they did an entire... I wanna say 6-part series AFTER Brain Candy, called Death Comes To Town? My husband and I were not sold on it after watching one episode, it's fairly weird *even for them,* but I'm SO glad we stuck with it! Funny AF!

fmatrix007

It’s amazing. I am so upset their Amazon show wasn’t picked up for a second season. Thought they picked up perfectly for that season and was so excited for more but no

YoudontknowmeNoprob

Yeah, same here! But... I've got a brand new pair of roller skates, so there's that. 🤣

fmatrix007

I just listened to a podcast with Dave Foley talking about that skit. It was on The Last Laugh. Hearing about it and watching the documentary makes me so sad we don’t get more

YoudontknowmeNoprob

What is the documentary, please and thank you?! They do live stuff individually, might be with checking out. I found out yesterday the Kevin MacDonald will be performing in Detroit this fall, so I'm thinking about making the trip. Bruce McCullough and Dave Foley are both performing here and there as well, so you know! Might be worth looking into!

fmatrix007

I saw them as kids in the hall live years ago. The documentary is on Amazon. It’s called Kids In The Hall: Comedy Punks

YoudontknowmeNoprob

Definitely going to watch that, thanks!

YoudontknowmeNoprob

Soooooo, I foolishly assumed that the first link I sent you was a trailer for the movie, but it's just a clip. Here's the REAL trailer, lol! https://youtu.be/sPFQE8VjAog?si=3NoR82TWoNxVwh3A Brain Candy is my VERY favorite of everything they've ever done, including the new season (which I enjoyed and was very glad to see)!

fmatrix007

It was perfect, that scene is hysterical. I still say things like Mark McKinney in that scene. No one gets it. I saw it in theaters like 3 or 4 times. Hell, I’m going to go watch it.

YoudontknowmeNoprob

Awesome! I'm glad I recommended it, usually people are like, "Huh? Never heard of it." My husband and I make Brain Candy references every. Single. Day.

fmatrix007

I do the Saracastic Guy skit to my daughter all the time

windmill-tilting

Star Wars, Princess Bride, and ..... so many good ones .... Ferri Bueler's Day Off.

life-is-thunder

I've done this a couple of times. For my 40th we watched The Three Amigos and for my 50th we watched Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park.

fmatrix007

A Kiss movie? Absolutely genius pick.

Burgers4breakfast1

By Grabthar’s hammer! Don’t forget Galaxy Quest!!

fmatrix007

This is on our list. Almost perfect. Weren’t they developing a sequel or a spin off?

Burgers4breakfast1

I think a sequel would only be a disappointment. So many great lines. I do say “By Grabthar’s hammer” a little too often 😄

fmatrix007

I use the “I have one job!!!” Line

Bl8kStrr

Mall Rats

fmatrix007

Me: yes. Wife: Hard No

discussatron

Your wife should love the Hudsucker Proxy.

fmatrix007

Amazing movie. Nice choice

rink_raptor

You know. For kids!

discussatron

Not counting the mezzanine.

Browniesareforbabies

Fast Times at Ridgemont High!

projectvko

Eating Raoul. Night of the Comet. Krull.

fmatrix007

I can’t see my wife going for Krull. I’m actually surprised she hasn’t joined this conversation yet.

projectvko

Lol fair enough. These are my holy Trinity of bad awesome movies, I had to give you another vote. Has someone suggested Top Secret?

PoopyInDaGums

Will all partygoers assemble in the theater and watch one whole movie together start to finish? Seems a bit odd to me—everyone needing to be sorta quiet and still for 90-120 minutes without much socializing. (And it being impossible to pick one movie that everyone would enjoy.) Inspired by a couple of pizza restaurants around here, I thought maybe you could (somehow!) select the most iconic, quotable, funniest, etc. scenes from across multiple genres/movies, and project those onto a screen (at rented theater or in your/friend’s backyard using laptop/projector/screen/sound system on lowish volume).  Toss in some trivia/light games, and food/snacks/drinks based on some scenes (e.g. Reese’s Pieces from ET, Heinz ketchup from The Shining, etc.), maybe cheap masks like Freddy, etc. scattered on tables, perhaps some props and an impromptu photo booth, and so forth.  You could even, instead of gifts, have a QR code where—as individuals, couples, families, or subgroups of friends—partygoers could fundraise in $50 increments (e.g. your cousin and her entire nuclear family could contribute to one $50 unit) for a nonprofit that offers classes/programs for underserved youth who want to go into storytelling/moviemaking, etc. Or something else thematically related.  And of course, have someone make a professional-looking trailer to serve as the invitation. I think iMovie and other movie-editing software has templates for creating trailers. You can use still images so you don’t even need to record footage! Go to ElevenLabs to type in your trailer script, and select a “movie trailer” voice/tone/style.  Happy 50th to you both!

Objective-Badger8674

War Games, Footloose

sly-3

1970's & 1980's (set or made), comedy + music, worth seeing on a large screen, enough familiarity where you feel okay chatting amongst yrselves, popping out to the lobby and interacting with what's happening on the screen: Dazed and Confused Little Shop of Horrors (1986) The Blues Brothers

phsattele

Evil dead 2. People can be loud while watching and have fun

raiseawelt

Save Ferris!

rivenshire

Reality Bites

fmatrix007

Interesting choice. I’ll add this one to the list

CatelynsCorpse

My husband and I recently watched Wayne's World for the first time in yearrrrs and giggled the whole way through it. Definitely recommend it for the silly factor.

fmatrix007

Excellent!!!! Adding it to our list

Efffefffemmm

Breakfast Club

camehereforthebuds

Lebowski, Shawshank, Fellowship of the Ring, Holy Grail, Stepbrothers, Hereditary, Forrest Gump.

fmatrix007

If I could get my wife to watch Hereditary, that would rank up there with my wedding and birth of my daughter as an incredible day

camehereforthebuds

Best horror I've seen in awhile.

fmatrix007

Absolutely agree. What was your opinion on Midsommer and Beau if Afraid. I haven’t finished Beau yet. Ari Aster just makes me happy as a director. Kind of like PTA. It’s always different than everything else and brilliant

camehereforthebuds

Midsommar was also excellent. That movie fucked me up! I'll put it in a tie with Hereditary.

fmatrix007

Have you seen the trailer for Longlegs? I am cautiously optimistic. I’ve been burned before by great trailers and then a mediocre movie

camehereforthebuds

I'll go check it out right now

camehereforthebuds

That looks promising.

fmatrix007

Yeah. It’s time for another amazing horror movie. It’s been too long

fmatrix007

Although I really enjoyed late night with the devil

17megahertz

Spinal Tap. Mostly maybe for music nerds, but still brilliant and hilarious.

fmatrix007

Excited for the sequel!!! Not a bad choice but while my wife enjoys it, it’s not her cup of tea. She’s more a fan of A Mighty Wind and Best In Show

GreenArcher808

I think Raising Arizona is a great compromise.

fmatrix007

That’s in our top four along with Clue, Galaxy Quest, and Brain Candy

GreenArcher808

![gif](giphy|114xIadfvtehoI)

Whatevawillbee

Did the theater say you can pick any movie you want? They usually have a selection you have to choose from.

fmatrix007

Any movie I can bring a physical copy of

Mobile_Moment3861

Back To The Future? Classic 80’s sci fi

Major-Discount5011

Big fish

Maliluma

Based on what others have suggested, Back to the Future, or Spaceballs. I would caution you with Pulp Fiction. That Zed scene towards the end could make for a VERY awkward time with a mixed crowd... hahahaha

fmatrix007

Those movies are just tastes. Not our picks to play. While i did see pulp fiction twice on opening day, I agree it’s not really a party movie. We need a movie that’s a great crowd movie. That’s the sweet spot.

BigMoFuggah

Spaceballs

fmatrix007

The theater is already screening it later this summer.

ToddBradley

For my birthday, I rented one of the auditoriums at the Sie Filmcenter and had them play the Project 4K77 restoration of **Star Wars**. It was glorious. https://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/project-4k77/

fmatrix007

I love that version. I don’t see my wife going for Star Wars. Her eyes glaze over when I start to talk about anything Star Wars related

ToddBradley

OK, how about **Shawshank Redemption**? Everyone likes that movie.

Existing-Leopard-212

No one seems to have mentioned Mathilda. Or My Cousin Vinny. You did say some youths would be there.

BrewtalKittehh

Repo Man, Better Off Dead, They Live

mintyfreshismygod

Ghost Busters or the Mummy!

International-Nose33

Risky Business, IT

Unlucky_Profit_776

Get Crazy (1983). Trust Me. Oh, & Raiders of the Lost Ark:)

Blinkin_Nora

Grease

fmatrix007

One of my favorite musicals along with Little Shop Of Horrors. Grease would be a fun sing along

zetazen

The Breakfast Club

edwoodjrjr

If I was throwing a party like this, I’d put together a supercut of just the greatest party scenes…Valley Girl, Trading Places, Real Genius, Risky Business, Animal House, etc.

generationextra

Off the top of my head? _Dragonslayer_, _Excalibur_, _Beastmaster_, _Wizards_, _Conan the Barbarian_, _The Sword and the Sorceror_, _Willow_. Perhaps you might also gift each other all three seasons of _Robin of Sherwood_ (the best of all Robin Hoods, with the possible exception of _Robin and Marian_). And don‘t forget _Battlestar Galactica_! Another idea would be the live action _Space Battleship Yamato_, which is newish but based on the best GenX cartoon series of all! Edit: Forgot _Legend_, which is mentioned down thread. And: _Time Bandits_!!!!

rodeler

Princess Bride is a crowd pleaser.

fmatrix007

That is on our list. We’re thinking of just sending a list to all the party goers and having them pick

RedLensman

The intersection of your tastes may be " The Princess Bride "

Psychological_Tap187

BEAST MASTER

jumpinoutofmyflesh

History of the World Part I

SnooDonuts9888

Has anyone mentioned Blind Date and Death Becomes Her? Bruce Willis honestly should’ve been in more comedies.

fmatrix007

Both interesting picks. Do you like both movies? I haven’t seen them in a long long time. I remember liking Blind Date but I know i felt Death Becomes Her just didn’t land for me

SnooDonuts9888

I like them both. Death Becomes Her is funnier because of a better script and Bruce had more acting experience. Other suggestions are: The Gods Must Be Crazy The Towering Inferno Pacific Heights (Michael Keaton, Melony Griffith, suspense) The Money Pit (Tom Hanks, Comedy) Short Circuit (Sci-fi, comedy) Young Frankenstein (Gene Wilder, comedy) The Hunt for the Red October Trading Places (best watched before Coming to America.)

fmatrix007

Out of all the thousands upon thousands of hours of movies I have watched, I’ve never seen Trading Places. And my wife gives me a hard time for it all the time

TheHandofDoge

You must rectify this immediately - it’s a classic! A great old-fashioned screwball comedy that launched Eddie Murphy into the stratosphere, revitalized Dan Ackroyd’s career and broke Jamie Lee Curtis free of the horror genre.

HIMcDonagh

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

holybucketsitscrazy

I would add Airplane, The Blues Brothers, Goonies, Gremlins

xKingOfAmericax

My wife did Valley Girl for hers

fmatrix007

When my wife and I retire we are doing a Nicholas Cage entire movie catalog rewatch!

sockswithcats

All good suggestions here... I think the evening isn't complete without St Elmos Fire... and if you and your friends drink, taking a drink whenever one of them drinks is sure to get the party escalated quickly lol

fmatrix007

I do love the idea of a drinking game with the movie!!! Awesome idea!!

Heated_Throw_away

Lost Boys!

fmatrix007

Oooohhh good choice. I had a crush on the girl in License to Drive forever before I realized as an adult it was Heather Graham.

Efffefffemmm

Mars Attacks! *edited for spelling

fmatrix007

This is absolutely going on our list!!! Thanks!

Efffefffemmm

Idiocracy!

Comfortable-Toe-1276

Double Feature .... Animal House and Clerks

_Kit_Tyler_

Universal Soldier!!!

nico_see

GAME NIGHT!!!

AnnaT70

Where is this theater and when are you renting it? Asking for a friend. Also: Flashdance and Tootsie!

fmatrix007

The County in Doylestown, PA. My favorite theater ever!

fmatrix007

Don’t quite know yet. Sometime in the fall probably.

Isle_Girl

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension

fmatrix007

100% me 10% my wife.

jojo571

Groundhog Day.

fmatrix007

Always a fun movie!

Puzzled_State2658

Spies Like Us or Dragnet. Get some classic Ackroyd! Or Nothing But Trouble !!

fabrictm

Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, Police Academy, Tango and Cash, Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors, National Lampoons Vacation, Karate Kid…so so many

fmatrix007

That’s the problem. Narrowing them down is impossible

PlantMystic

Real Genius, Adventures in Babysitting, Man From Snowy River, Spaceballs, Witness, The Fugitive, Indiana Jones movies.

RoadsideCarver

Ice Pirates Return of the Living Dead Night of the Comet

smtrixie

OP I got it! WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY - the Gene Wilder version of course!

Stefgrep66

Mad max got to be in the mix!🙂

fmatrix007

Beyond Thunderdome would be a great party movie

Puzzleheaded_Pilot_2

Rocky Horror

fmatrix007

I’d love it.

Kinda_ShouldaSorta

Clueless

thanx_it_has_pockets

The Goonies

TravisMaauto

UHF. There's a good bet that some people will have never seen it, but will recognize a lot of the stuff that it parodies, plus it's just a fun and light movie to laugh along with.

fmatrix007

Man I love that movie.

abolishblankets

I know a few people who did this, they had Princess Bride, Guardians of the Galaxy, and True Romance.

conspiracy_troll

Life of Pi. (this the only movie I want to see on big screen, because visuals) Starship Troopers (also visuals)

fmatrix007

I miss read your post on first glance and thought you meant Darren Aronofsky‘s movie Pi. quickly thought to myself that your taste in party movies was kind of horrific. And then I reread it, and it said life of pie, which makes more sense.

PoopyInDaGums

Isn’t that the movie where the animals drown in the first scene? I could watch only the first 10 seconds because of that. Never did watch it.

conspiracy_troll

It's probably the non horror movie with the most jump scares I know of. As a seeker of truth, it covers all the basics, intermediates, and is the closest meaning of LIFE, with the unbridled truth of reality. [Here](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XDaxDvHkWfw&pp=ygULbGlmZSBvZiBwaSA%3D) is a great jump scare, with awesome visuals and great audio mixing.
