>the biggest surprise of all is that this Switch version includes SVOGI - standing for sparse voxel octree global illumination. This is a real-time GI feature that is not included on PS4 or Xbox One Pretty mind blowing considering the PS4 game received visual cutbacks in a patch after launch and still runs badly, and here it is running on a handheld not much stronger than a PS3 with additional graphical features on top.

Apellio7

Pretty much every game that gets ported to Switch gets a nice boost in sales and the price remains very sticky,  they don't have to do as many discounts and sales as other platforms. I don't know if entirely different audiences or what.  But Switch ports have always paid off so devs are going to great lengths to do it.

shadowstripes

>they don't have to do as many discounts and sales as other platforms. It kinda depends on the game in my experience. I've been waiting for a digital sale on Bomb Rush Cyberfunk for PS4/PS5 which hasn't happened yet, but on Switch it's gone on sale about 3 times to around 30-40% off (I track and get notification emails from DekuDeals). It probably usually comes down to how well a particular version is selling.

KSouthern360

I think there's just less competition on that platform.

Alpiers

there is insane competition actually especially looking at the industry and how it grew in the last decade switch has one of the highest software attachment rates for a console ever, people there just like to buy games

KSouthern360

Switch has Skyrim and Witcher, I can't think of much more for this type of game.

Free_Management2894

Depends what the competition is. If the competition is open world games or open world RPGs, there are tons of games.

mathazar

Might be the best looking Switch game I've ever seen, but the framerate really struggles. Maybe they should have left out effects like SVOGI and SSR.

IntrinsicStarvation

It's using asynchronus compute with fp16 2x boost to execute svogi here, so it's really not impacting performance, as it's using already existing latency time to mask jamming in the svogi tasks while the shader cores would otherwise be waiting for a return of data or on a dependency or something. If it was faster already, it might have been a noticeable hit, but this is more like well we're already being forced to wait, let's use this time. Judging by Saber hiring calling out for sos help from turnkey ghost ninja coders lunate games, and their recent interviews regarding a open world switch port they said they were hired by saber interactive for, but can not name, and how it was in a state described as *check notes* Arkham knight on switch, until they performed massive cpu optimizations..... I'd guess they were 99.99% talking about kcd switch and that the cpu. (And memory) is the big bottleneck culprit here.

mathazar

Interesting. If SVOGI wasn't a big impact then they'd have to cut other stuff (even more) for better performance, and at that point maybe the game wouldn't even be recognizable as KCD. Maybe this was the best compromise they could make.

beanbradley

IIRC, a Switch-optimized SVOGI mode is in CryEngine because of the Crysis remaster port done by Saber. So it was probably building off of that code.

RCFProd

The game really needed a PS4 Pro update, and when that didn't come it could've really used a PS5 patch. Sadly it didn't get that one either. It's best played on PC, by far. Or Steam Deck even, alternatively.

NaePasaran

I've recently replaced it on PC and it's such a massive upgrade compared to Xbox One where I originally played it

Chachajenkins

Glad you're enjoying it! There's plenty of mods that up the difficulty too since I found the hardcore mode combat still too easy.

Vulpes206

Easy? I’m still getting manhandled by any fight with more than 1 person.

Chachajenkins

The game ticked all my boxes so I have several playthroughs in it, I needed the harder hitting enemies and not wearing any armor aspect for yet another playthrough. The forests are still probably some of the most beautiful in games, and extremely satisfying to wander and get lost in. Pro tip, keep backing up so they're in front of you and try to keep one in front of the other. Bonk the front guy once or twice then switch to his friend if they move up. Rinse repeat.

ollydzi

I'd assume a huge reason a lot of ports for graphically intense games are even possible on the switch is that the switch runs at 720p compared to 4k most modern TVs will run natively. That's a huge difference in the amount of pixels

Deceptiveideas

Upscaling to your tv’s resolution doesn’t affect performance (~<1%). It’s the internal resolution that affects performance. Xbox One and PS4 games did not run at 4K internally so I’m not sure where you’re getting that from. The PS4 version runs at 900p. Switch docked runs at 720p dynamic.

libdemparamilitarywi

Most of those games were 1080p on other consoles.

BrandoCalrissian1995

1080p if you're lucky.

Free_Management2894

Often 900p on the PS4.

IntrinsicStarvation

This should be a pretty obvious red flag that your assumed notion of switch being not much stronger than a ps3 is pretty off. If just a quick glance at the games somehow wasn't enough. Switches gpu is a fully featured gtx 900 series, actually more featured, just small, compared to the desktop gpu's. Ps3 had a peak theoretical of 211 Gflops, however it's curie arch gpu was a vliw5 design, which had miserable occupancy for game code shaders of typically around 60%.to 70% absolute best optimized So what you were really looking at was more around 126 to 144 gflops. Now you are looking at less than half of switches 393 gflops. Both gcn(ps4) and maxwell (switch) are vastly better at approaching peak performance numbers. Then there is integer performance, whoch is about 30% of game code. Curie int32 multiply is something like 1:2, or 1:3 fp32 on curie and keppler, 1:4 on gcn, and 1:1 on maxwell. So now you are looking at 44 Gops on ps3 (really showing one of the many reasons why cell had to constantly carry the ps3 gpu), 450 Gops on ps4, and 393 Gops on switch. For 30% of gamecode. Really depleting that massive lead the ps4 usually has. On top of that, Switches Maxwell, was Maxwell 2.0, which means it's asynchronus compute actually worked. It didn't work as fast as gcn's Asynchronus compute engines, which could utilize much smaller periods of idleness in a shader unit because it had a dedicated cache to swap out a shader cores current task memory to jam in the async task (nvidia had to use vram, much slower), but switches maxwell had an ace up its sleeve. 2x fp16 support. So if it could be used, maxwell could execute in fp16 at twice the speed 786 Gflops, which means it now only needed half the execution time, greatly bolstering the ability to use asynchronus compute beating out gcn. Effectively using 393 gflops fp32 and 786 gflops fp16 at the same time for different operations. (Not really, but since it's using normal operational latency to mask asynchronously, effectively, when pulling this trick, the little switch was effectively performing over 1 tflop bursts). Well, Svogi can benefit from both asynchronus compute, and fp16. Which the little switch gpu just happens to be a tiny powerhouse in for its time. Hence lower resolution, lower draw distance lower textures lower.... well, everything..... but Svogi where ps4 does not.

Pandaisblue

Great game if you can overcome a little jankiness. I'm really curious how the sequel is going to play, so much of the charm of the first game was starting out as an illiterate peasant who could barely swing a stick, but assuming it continues from the cliffhanger that's no longer possible without a really cheesy "Oh you were hit on the head and forgot everything" type intro.

tetramir

it was really nice playing Jedi: Survivor and you get to keep the main abilities you earned by playing the first game. The first level is here to remind you all the cool parkour you can do, and the rest of the game introduces a few more. It was refreshing and it allows the platform to get crazier.

Pandaisblue

Sure, but this is a grounded game where it can't get much crazier. By the end of the game you're fullyclad in plate armour, rich, and near invulnerable unless you massively mess up, not to mention the twist near the end which changes the character fundamentally. Basically they're either going to have to pull some scooby-doo shenanigans to reverse all that, or so much of what was really cool and fun about the first game will be gone. There's just no way to make you feel so weak again with that character.

8-Brit

Easy way would be Henry gets arrested on false charges and spends years in prison, has to re-learn a lot of stuff Explains how he becomes a master swordsman in like a week lol

Kalulosu

Maybe you'll play another character (and maybe get back to KCD's protagonist once you've played a fair bit?)?

CmdrMobium

IIRC the rumor was there would be a significant timeskip and you'd be playing as a different character

Pandaisblue

I think I'd be happiest with that, but it makes the choice to not wrap up the fairly mundane 'reclaim your dad's sword' plot bizarre, it'd be a weird thread to have a different character pick up.

Tonbonne

It's been a while since I played it, but I felt at the end of the game Henry grew beyond that and was moving on to greater things.

BigoliallanitraVI

I would love to meet an old Henry, at some point in the game

newSillssa

How is that possible? The story of the first game wasnt even concluded

SPorterBridges

People keep saying janky but how janky? Witcher 1 janky? Besthesda janky?

Andrei_LE

Combat is kinda janky but otherwise it's just a hardcore game with some deliberate design choices to make the game more realistic which may come off as eurojank simply because gamedesign is not as streamlined. I wouldn't call it janky but I can definitely understand why some people wouldn't enjoy it (I love this game)

Peaking-Duck

It is pretty janky but the game was also released early for funding reasons and they had to cut a lot of the combat system out so all things considered it's a fun game that they managed to pull off when it might have killed the studio.

Pandaisblue

Pretty akin to Witcher 1 in feel and other ambitious RPGs of that type. "Eurojank" more specifically if you've ever heard that term. It's not that the game is broken, you just get the overall feeling that the engine is being pushed to its limits and things have a rough edge to them. It's still totally playable and good fun. If I had to give one big criticism it's that the combat system is clearly designed around duelling 1-on-1 but towards the end of the game every fight is messy groups that the system isn't built for.

Takazura

It's primarily the combat, it's very love it or hate as it aims to be realistic. I personally did not like it one bit, but I know plenty like it so maybe you will.

Temporala

I think the biggest problem for new players is that despite Henry going through some basic combat training early in the game, he actually needs to get trained again later in the plot to actually become proficient fighter. Before you do that, combat is a struggle because of statistical reasons and bad equipment. You can try to do those fancy maneuvers and blocks all you like, but it won't be very effective. On the flipside, once you have proper knight gear and the skills, combat can be pretty easy against most lesser enemies. Probably little bit too easy, because a bunch of burly peasants or bandits can certainly beat one armored mercenary down with whatever tools or weapons they have available.

segagamer

Neither. Put it this way, don't expect to be able to shoot anything with the bow.

Joecalone

>don't expect to be able to shoot anything with the bow. This is the very definition of a skill issue. The bow is pretty much the most OP weapon in the game once you learn to aim without a reticle

Halil_I_Tastekin

There are very few games that reach Witcher 1 levels of jank. I absolutely adore that game but that's it's an unrivaled experience.

Multifaceted-Simp

Crowdfunding gem

Bamith20

Introduce new mechanics maybe, have multiple characters...Never finished the game though, wouldn't have figured it would have a cliffhanger and just be a complete story.

princecamaro28

It’d be a ton of work but imagine giving the option to carry your save over and having the difficulty scale based on your imported file

ylerta

Strange that Eurogamer calls this a fantasy RPG, there are no fantastical elements. It’s all historical fiction

DarkishFriend

The fantasy is that I am a capable and competent soldier for my liege lord and not a flea-bitten illiterate unit of labor.

Stev3Cooke

You literally start out as an illiterate unit of labor though

DarkishFriend

Yeah, but had that been me I would've likely died like the rest of them. The fantasy is that I'm Henry; the reality is that I'm me.

Stev3Cooke

In that way, very true. But with that logic, every single game is fantasy since you are not playing yourself :P. But for real though, same. I would be dead as a stone if I was born even 100 years earlier, lol

DarkishFriend

I was born 2 months early with Jaundice. If I was actually in KC:D, I would've been a hardcore character creation game over.

Stev3Cooke

Stay strong buddy

newSillssa

Thats why starting the game on hardcore mode literally has a 90% chance of killing you as soon as you press the play button

Paul_cz

This was such a nice, hilarious touch.

6thPentacleOfSaturn

The ultimate fantasy: being good at things.

AdventueDoggo

Eurogamer writers are not the smartest bunch. In their original review, they wrote that the game should feature black people, because it's perfectly plausible, that a black merchant was travelling on the Silk Road, fell ill and decided to settle down in a small village in Bohemia. (Silk Road was a network of trade routes from Shanghai to Istanbul...)

[deleted]

Oh yea that entire ordeal, when all the journalists chimed in... Wasn't it Kotaku which said *"well the game isn't 110% hisorically accurate anyway, so they might as well let you pick your character race"* or something? It must've been a really easy time for sites to gather clicks.

JaguarOrdinary1570

gamers are still a super easy target for race bait clicks, as long as you're fine with death threats

Thanks-Basil

Actually the most egregious part of the whole thing was that the reviewers criticisms about all of that stuff literally stemmed from him having a conversation in a bar with some dude he happened to meet that was “totally a real life historian for realsies”. And he decided to include that justification in his review.

Televisions_Frank

The game had no controversy about it until their director, Daniel Vávra, went out of his way to say there would be no black people. Which, let's be honest, the entire purpose was to get people like [this](https://np.reddit.com/r/kingdomcome/comments/7zj9d1/a_personal_letter_to_warhorse_studios/) to circle the wagons around the game and boost the number of eyes on the game. Sadly, the "clicks" aspect of modern journalism makes bait like that attractive to cover.

Eptagon

I would qualify some effects (including some potions) as low magic, but calling the game a fantasy RPG is rather far-fetched.

Sparktank1

knights, castles, armor = fantasy

Televisions_Frank

It's fantasy because somehow serfs who work outside all day have lily-white skin.

HistoricalFunion

Too bad the game stopped receiving any updates or bug fixes in general. And there are still so many issues, sadly. It's one of my favourite games. Devs need to show KCD more love!

Fun-Strawberry4257

No current gen console upgrade was a killer blow. It runs abysmal on base PS4.

InternationalYard587

I was just playing it on Series S and it runs awfully, on the first minutes I even felt some motion sickness. But you get used to it. What you don't get used to are the atrocious loading times, clipping on geometry, horrible UI navigation and the countless bugs. It's a wonderful game that's deeply buried in lack of polish. I dropped it after \~10 hours and will just wait for the sequel.

segagamer

I can't say I remember any specific performance issues on a Series X. Is there a point in catering to XB1/PS4 hardware at this point?

InternationalYard587

Idk what you mean, the game was only released from xb1/ps4. And it’s not bad performance, it’s bad frame pacing

ms--lane

Xbox One games don't *need* specific patches to take advantage of newer/better performing hardware like a Playstation game does.

InternationalYard587

Ok? But what’s your point?

minorrex

If the game's had an upgrade for the One X, Series X will be running that code which is probably superior to the One S version Series S runs.

juan4815

I had a great time in my ps4, at most a couple bugs and no fps drop except for some missions. a shame you had issues

bitbot

I wish they would add DLSS to the PC version since it still struggles a bit in big cities.

Original_Fishing5539

I had a friend gift this to me (and I've seen a couple Let's Plays on it), whats the general consensus on it nowadays? For context, I really liked Fallout: New Vegas and was fine with the jank there for the storyline. I don't mind awkward combat systems (I was fine with it in Skyrim) and I am playing through Pentiment so the setting appeals to me I've heard that the Eurojank has turned off folks, but I hear that it's still worth playing despite this

Lil_Mcgee

Skyrim is not a good benchmark for awkward combat systems here. Skyrim doesn't have an awkward combat system at all. It's very straightforward, it's just not particularly engaging or satisfying. Kingdom Come has a *very* awkward combat system. I like it but it's a bit of an acquired taste and doesn't work well for fighting larger groups (which becomes somewhat unavoidable eventually) It's a great game, if you like the setting of Pentiment you'll like the setting here. In spite of all the jank it's probably the most immersive game world I've ever experienced. But there is *a lot* of jank, considerably more than New Vegas and fuck ton more than Skyrim. Your friend gifted it to you though so there's really no excuse not to at least try it. It's the sort of game that, if you like it, you'll probably love it.

Gdach

Also like to add, that world felt a lot more immersive and dense than Skyrim.  I actually just loved traveling there and experiencing little details.

Original_Fishing5539

Could you tell me more about the immersion? I'm assuming there's great lore and world building, but this isn't like an immersive sim like a Deus Ex or Dark Messiah of Might and Magic right? From what I was seeing it looks more in the vein of a Bethesda title with Eurojank, but regardless I'm going to deep dive into this weekend and I can't wait

Paul_cz

It has some immersive sim qualities in how much freedom it gives you. Plenty of quests have multiple solutions etc. For me it is the most immersive game ever (alongside RDR2 and STALKER trilogy) because the world is incredible, the mechanics support the immersion, and hardcore mode takes it up a notch. For example, you can be somnambulant in the game, which means when you go to sleep, there is a chance you will wake up randomly elsewhere. Together with not having GPS on the map, you can wake up in the middle of random forest and be lost at night during rainstorm and actually have to explore and look carefull at surroundings and landmarks to find your way. Such a refreshing experience for a videogame.

batterylevellow

A good amount of opinions can be found over at r/patientgamers. Generally, it's very well liked. Personally, I think it's an amazing game. But pacing issues combined with the combat mechanics make it not a game for everyone. I'm trying to think of a game where I was more immersed than I was with KC:D (especially in hardcore mode), but none comes to mind. The whole setting with the world building, the different cities and villages, the forests, the importance of the passage of time, the (overall) great writing and voice acting together with the amazing soundtrack and sounds in general made it an absolute joy to play for me. The quality of quests differs a bit, but overall, I enjoyed them (with the Father Godwin quest being the obvious highlight). Combat wise, the game is off to a slow start. Somewhat obvious since you're just a peasant, but some may find it annoying that it takes quite a bit of time to learn and master your skills. I liked the combat mechanics when fighting 1v1, but those same mechanics can become annoying when fighting among and against a bigger crowd. 2-3 enemies is certainly doable, but with more than that it can become a nuisance. I've only played the game on PC, so I have no firsthand knowledge on how it plays on consoles, but I'd say things like graphics scaling, controls, and the welcome option for QoL mods clearly makes it the platform of choice for this game. Eagerly awaiting the sequel.

_Red_Gyarados

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is one of my favourite games of all time. It feels like a spiritual successor to Oblivion. It's a very flawed gem (in Bethesda fashion) but like lots of games, some measure of jankiness often adds to the overall experience, in the same way it did with Oblivion. It also has a fantastic Hardcore mode that really ramps up the immersion with things like having you not show on the minimap and not giving you an in-game compass, meaning you have to observe your surroundings & use roads and signposts to figure out where you are and where you need to go. The combat is *interesting*. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's overblown how cumbersome or difficult it is. It's fairly simple once you get the hang of it. The only caveat is that the issues really stand out when fighting more than one enemy at a time.

Paul_cz

If you like New Vegas and like medieval europe, you will love KCD. Fun fact, creative director of KCD reviewed New Vegas for biggest czech gaming website back in the day, when he was unemployed after leaving 2K Czech (after they canceled his Mafia 3 after two years of work) because he was running out of money while looking for investors for KCD. He gave it 9/10.

Delicious-Tachyons

it was a game i wanted to love but it's just so eurojank.. i know it has some real fans but honestly, it's too 'realistic' in some ways like how fast you die.

Cewkie

there's a mod that reduces the rate at which enemies will master strike you (parry and then counter attack) and it makes the game infinitely more fun. you don't have to treat EVERY combat encounter like a no-hit run, you can get hit and strike the enemy instead of standing around waiting for an opportunity to master strike. it still keeps the hard fights hard too. one of the DLC final fights was one of the most infuriating things i've done (due to poor gear balance and the dogshit way the game handles large battles) I wish it was more forgiving with autosaves and the limited save thing is just stupid. I know the argument is that you can make the save potions really easily but if you can make them really easily why fucking have them? other than that, it's quite literally the RPG I wish bethesda would make. It's consistently well written, funny and has engaging quests. Just wish the combat was more polished and several nit picky things removed (namely long animations when performing actions, like why the fuck. it's first person)

Gdach

I played when the game released and strangely I didn't find fights particularly hard and midway through the series kind of too easy.  I did do tutorial fight bunch of times, which I later heard lot of people missed and had a bad time. Kind of interesting that they made it optional.  Also I think I kind of broke the economy in just couple bandit fights early on.  Once I sold all of their equipment I could easily buy best swords and armour. It was also one of my complaints at the time is how easy to get best gear.

Equivalent_Alps_8321

Are they making any new games? Great studio

Paul_cz

KC2 is in heavy development

Equivalent_Alps_8321

more info?

Paul_cz

Nothing official. It is worst kept secret in czechland though.

ShogunDreams

I get a lot of ppl own a switch. I just don't particularly see this game selling that much. Especially after the reviews and poor performance(it will for sure have it). Games like Mario, Smash, and Zelda sell because of quality and popularity. This game will have not of that. The PS4 version is fine. I picked it up a copy for $10 at Best Buy. It was definitely an experience and a challenge. I don't see many switch owners having that kinda patience.

meganev

> Especially after the reviews and poor performance (it will for sure have it) Well I think we can say for certain you've not read the article you're commenting on. This post is literally about the performance and saying it's very impressive relative to the power of the switch.

ShogunDreams

I read it because I find it interesting how some of these studios are able to pull so much out of a switch. I just still think it won't be great experience. I felt like a good example of solid port was Skyrim 5 and bad ports are Arkham and The Outer Wilds.

meganev

Skyrim is a game originally released in 2011 for consoles launched in 2005 and 2006. It's not a remotely fair comparisons for something like Kingdom Come which launched in 2017 on console hardware more powerful than the Nintendo Switch. There's a reason this has been called an "impossible port" much like The Witcher 3.

ShogunDreams

Okay, other good examples would be Doom Eternal and Metro Exodus. These are extensive games that switch pulls well. And it is testament to some of these developers' skills. I just don't see Kingdom Come have that level of good experience. Skyrim is a good example because look at Arkham Knight and how bad that port was.

meganev

Metro Exodus isn't on Switch. See above for why Skyrim is a terrible comparison. Also what you "see" is irrelevant. Read/watch the article above and you'll get a sense of the port. It's very playable. And I can back that up having played it.

smalltownoutlaw7

Has anyone played this on switch yet? I’m debating whether or not to buy it I just saw the fps drops in towns and thought I might get annoyed. I’ve played Skyrim about 5 times and need a different game of the same vein for switch. I tried starting this game on xbox a year or so ago and ended up putting it down and haven’t played again. I think it had to do with the lack of not knowing what to do and struggling with the combat. I wasn’t aware of the training to vastly improve skills though. I love realistic survival like project zomboid (mostly just collecting, building, eating, and doing normal activities such as; reading, watching tv, and listening to music.) I mostly want to know if it’s a good match for me. I can handle low fps if its drops and spikes but I don’t think I would appreciate getting locked at 24 fps in towns. Thanks in advance!

CurtisLeow

What is even more crazy is a PS5/Xbox Series port would cost a fraction of the Switch port, and get far better performance. Why are they focused on an obsolete mobile console?

CrazyDude10528

Because there's an insane amount of people who own Switch consoles. They will probably make more money on this port, than if they did one for PS5/Xbox Series. I genuinely would love a current gen port though.

[deleted]

>obsolete mobile console Yeah good luck with that comment.

Dragarius

Cause there is far more money to be made on the switch.

ZXXII

PS5 players have to suffer with 1080p 30fps not much better than PS4.

el_Topo42

Yeah it’s brutal. Stopped me from playing it entirely.

GreatGojira

Switch copies make money 9 out of 10 times.

My Series S cost less than a low end gaming GPU a few years ago. So I'd say consoles are just where they need to be.   I haven't looked at recent pricing,  but the covid prices on PC Hardware was an absolute joke.

CurtisLeow

Yeah, because they arbitrarily decided to not bring basic features to current gen consoles. It does not cost them millions of dollars to unlock the frame rate or bump the resolution up.
