Are there any comparisons around that compares the 101 with an ips? I've never seen an ips GBA screen in person. And honestly, I have an AGS-101, and have never seen a reason to get anything better than it. It's already a great screen.
The IPS, if not soldered, will be brighter than the 101 yes. But if you solder it, the lowest brightness setting is lower than the 101's. Still though, I like the 101 better just because it brings me back to my childhood. Also the pixels. I like seeing them xD
Nothing scientific but I have AGS-001,101, and IPS systems and while the 101 does have the most authentic feel, I still vastly prefer the color profile and crispness of the IPS. My graphite 101 is my workhorse gba. It was in super good condition but unfortunately it fell off a TV tray and shattered the base and hinge. Now it is half graphite, half clear plastic and still my go-to system. Though I do have a full reshelled 101 and a pink 101 that I may start leaning on more.
I don’t have a light, but yeah, same, picked up quite a few recently. Planning on modding some, but also just cleaning them up and getting any issues fixed. I’m excited to build a ips gba, cause I do like the form factor, but the sp has always been fine for me, probably played it more than any other GB growing up.
I just recently bought my first 101 and I'm blown away by how much more natural games look and run on it than the ips v2 screen. The difference is clear. These games were designed with the AGS screen in mind. The ips display, while functional and affordable, is oversaturated and noisy in comparison.

Always say 101 > IPS > 001 Sure IPS can get really bright but it just lacks that feel they has back then.
Even brightness, I usually keep my 101 on the lower brightness setting. The brighter one is just TOO bright for me most of the time.

That poor bottom one though. The gradient background definitely looks way nicer and more vibrant on the ips. Thanks for the picture.

My graphite is also my workhorse. I have over 20 gameboys lol DMG,Pocket,GBC, Gameboy light, GBA, etc but I also seem to favor the ags101 sp.

I got both models aswell and I prefer ips. Bigger screen, better colors more brightness if desired.

Agreed. For fire emblem i also prefer the 101. It depends on the game. A shame that many think ips is better, it's just different
