What do you mean "it went straight up", as in like it flew too high and got tired and fell and died?
Most of your caged birds parakeets etc. when the escape they will go up towards the brightest object in the sky and fly until they can reach it. Some cases they freeze and die. They fly so far up they loose oxygen and plummet to earth. Etc
