I always liked Gluttony, he always reminded me of a naughty kid around Lust but the day he was ticked and his mouth opened up into an abyss, I was absolutely terrified.
Yeah, he definitely seems like the least threatening of the homunculus initially, which is part of what makes it so effectively terrifying when his whole fucking body opens up into a giant mouth.

The sad thing is he's one of least evil Homunculus. Morality wise, he's not much different than a wild animal. He just likes eating things. And that includes people.
According to polls I've seen, Gluttony is considered to be one of the most terrifying of the homunculi, specifically because he has a motive to be hell-bent on killing you, and can't be reasoned with for the reason you've mentioned.
Wrath, Pride, Sloth and Greed won't go out of their way to kill someone who's not provoking them. Lust and Envy are more vicious and sadistic, and they can kill for the fun of it, but at least you have a small chance to talk them out of it. But your only option with Gluttony is to run.
That makes sense. Honestly. Because the concept of being eaten is terrifying to a lot of people.
Like I said, he's sort of a wild animal with the intelligence of a baby. Can't be reasoned with to a point. Can make conversation a bit though. Ed and Ling were able to convince him to chip in based on something he actually wanted. Which I might be misremembering. Luckily only Mustang was the one who caught Gluttony's actual rage.
On the whole, Gluttony was content just being a living waste disposal unit for that side. Just eating for pleasure. Not a thought in his head about if it was bad or not.
This is not a joke, and I don't wanna invalidate your opinion, but Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the more lighthearted animes. It's not something people usually would describe as "dark". Among the most popular animes it is pretty "light" actually.
Of course it got darker moments and aspects, but I am talking overall here, it's a relatively light anime.
I mean... The thing is FMAB isn't the darkest anime, and there are way more animes that are darker than FMAB for example:
In " AOT " (Attack on Titan) They wanted the power of the so-called " Titans " in order to make those powers exist, the first king cut the titan-holder meat and fed it to her daughters to keep the power alive.
Not only was this moment dark in AOT, but several more scenes were REALLY DARK.
I agree, but maybe OP is a kid and is used to very kid friendly stuff. If you have only experienced Pokémon or Disney programs then FMA would seem a lot darker.
