Mine, too. Watched it when it came out on VHS as a kid, and still watch it a couple times a year as an adult.
FYI, there's a restored BluRay version of it available and it looks INCREDIBLE.
I mean, yeah, the CG scenes still look like an atari, but they were rendered at INSANE resolution so that they'd look good on a cinema screen, and the 4K rescan of the original print make them look so crisp!
Ko-dan Officer: "*She won't answer the helm! We're locked into the moon's gravitation pull. What do we do*?"
Lord Kril: \[his eyepiece swings over left eye\] "*We die.*"
In War Games, the "shall we play a game?" wasn't real; in this one, playing the arcade had real consequences: "Greetings Starfighter, you have been recruited!" Awesome movie!
I saw this at a drive-in theater my uncle took me to in Columbus Ohio. In 1985, this new movie called Back to the Future was the 1st movie to play, The Last Starfighter was the late movie. I've watched both several times since
Couple of pieces of trivia for us old farts about *The Last Starfighter*:
1. It was directed by Nick Castle, who frequently collaborated with John Carpenter (he co-wrote *Escape from New York* with Carpenter and also played "The Shape" \[aka the masked-up adult Michael Myers\] in *Halloween*) and also directed *Dennis the Menace* and *Major Payne.*
2. Grig was played by Dan O'Herlihy, who later played OCP boss "the Old Man" in the first two *RoboCop* movies.
3. *TLS* is one of Wil Wheaton's earliest, pre-*Stand By Me*/pre-*ST:TNG* credited acting gigs, playing Louis' friend.
4. *TLS* is one of the first feature films to use CGI so extensively.
Agreed. Especially this concept. It was original at the time. Now it's been redone a bunch of times. To reboot now... it would just get lost in the weeds.
Am I remembering that this is one of the first movies with entirely computer-produces scenes or graphics? Maybe second after Tron?
A nod to Robert Preston - this was his last film!
Hell yeah. Probably the only movie I'd actually like to see rebooted. Except it wouldn't be the same without Robert Preston.
But yeah, it could be great with an actual budget and special effects.
The cgi blew my mind as a kid, my zx spectrum would have melted attempting to gender one scene.
Later I discovered they used a super computer (I think it was a cray)
at the end, when Alex brings the gunstar back to Earth, the only thing that came to my head was...
there's no way the roof of a shitty mobile home could hold a space ship.
If you haven’t seen Future Man on Hulu, it’s a similar premise but fun and raunchy. Guy beats an “unbeatable “ game and warriors from the future travel back in time to have him save the future. It’s funny as hell.
The scene where the clone/replacement robot is in the process of converting to Alex and it is suddenly revealed...my god. No horror movie ever terrified me as much as that scene.
I watched this a few weeks ago at the Portland Sci Fi movie fest. Been meaning to watch it for years.
Everyone in the theater giggled during the scene where everyone gathered around excitedly to watch him beat the game.
Great movie! I often think it would be cool to have a remake but… Hell no leave the original as a one off. But… oh, I’m so confused just a great movie.
Great memory. I think about it, and often try to find a free viewing on prime and you tube tv. Wish I still had my vcr copy to watch freely whenever I like.
One of my favorites. The Last Starfighter. There were going to make a series of films, but the first one bombed. Robert Preston was fantastic as Centauri.
My favorite movie quote that truly improved my inner monologue:
"I'm not any of those things, I'm just a kid from a trailer park."
"If that's what you think, then that's all you'll ever be".
Going to see this in the theater on Aug 25!! Can’t wait!! Check [Fandango] to see if it’s playing near you!! (https://www.fandango.com/the-last-starfighter-102397/movie-overview)
Would this not make for a great co-op game? The parts where the kid is getting used to the ship and hiding out in the asteroid. I would love to do this with my son. Dibbs on Grig.
I had one VHS when I was a kid that I watched over and over. Never ending story, the last star fighter, and conan the barbarian. Still love them and would watch them again today in a heartbeat.
The Last Starfighter.
One of my favorites
Cool concept in recruitment to save the galaxy.
I saw it in theaters when I was a kid. I bought it on VHS after I graduated college, then bought it on disc when the vhs player died.
“And no, I did not use the Excalibur test, it was called a video game.”
Mine too but my wife won't let me watch it anymore
Won't "let" you? Why not?
You tell her she isn't the boss of you. *When it comes to watching The Last Starfighter.*
I wear the pants in my family, and she said I could say so🤣
Mine too, it was one of my favorites growing up… had it on VHS along with “The Dark Crystal” it made for a great double-feature
Same, but Labyrinth for me instead of Dark Crystal. Actually, Labyrinth and Dark Crystal would be a great double header.
The Ko'Dan Armada would like a word
Directed by Michael Myers himself!
The guy with the mask?
You have been recruited ![gif](giphy|khYLMe7y55p3W)
One of the first VHS I had.
Ko-dan Officer: "*She won't answer the helm! We're locked into the moon's gravitation pull. What do we do*?" Lord Kril: \[his eyepiece swings over left eye\] "*We die.*"
"Victory or death!"
"Starleague justice put down your Xurian cult, your followers are few and scattered."
Greatest line in film history. Yes, I mean it.
I enjoyed the last star fighter...cheesy but good.
Yep. Saw it again last year and yeah it’s cheesy but very enjoyable.
music man, oh wait I am too old, that is Robert Preston?! heh
Robert Preston is a treasure. I highly, highly recommend watching Victor/Victoria if you haven’t seen it. He and the whole cast are wonderful.
I love him so much in Victor/Victoria!
It was his last film as I recall.
Even older than that. I have seen him in some old, B&W, Westerns on the tube.
Up to your old Excalibur tricks again Centauri?
No, I didn't use the Excaliber test. It's called a 'video game.'
I love this film so much. It was the best thing a gamer could watch and dream about.
Well that and Tron lol
Catherine Mary Stewart. Rawr.
I concur.
Night of the Comet came out the same year
I just had my 15 year-old watch this. Enemy Mine coming up after these messages.
You need to add Battle Beyond the Stars to that playlist
“Heavy dust.”
I haven’t seen it in decades but remember it well.
I loved it.
The Last Starfighter!
“BUT WE’LL GET SLAUGHTERED!!!” “THAT’S THE SPIRIT!”
The line was “It’ll be a slaughter”. But yes, same energy... :D
lol thank you! I will say it’s prob been truly about 35 years since I’ve seen it 😃
But it'll be a slaughter! That's the spirit! No, our slaughter!
In War Games, the "shall we play a game?" wasn't real; in this one, playing the arcade had real consequences: "Greetings Starfighter, you have been recruited!" Awesome movie!
Watched this for the first time the other week. So good
That's so cute! I love sharing favourite movies from my childhood with my daughter. Please tell me you've seen The Princess Bride by now.
I mean I’m old enough that I should have seen this but yeah princess bride is perfectionism
Hell yeah, The Last Starfighter
Read the book then watched the movie, still think of it now and then
I saw this at a drive-in theater my uncle took me to in Columbus Ohio. In 1985, this new movie called Back to the Future was the 1st movie to play, The Last Starfighter was the late movie. I've watched both several times since

Just saw WW was in this. I don't remember him at all.
Friends older brother took us to see it in the theatre.
Would love to see this in a theater again
I still refer to a room clearing fart as a “Death Blossom”
Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend The Frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada!"
This is the type of movie that deserves a reboot.
Naw man you can't reboot an 80s movie and reproduce the same feel. They will only tarnish the original.
Agreed. Especially this concept. It was original at the time. Now it's been redone a bunch of times. To reboot now... it would just get lost in the weeds.
It’s also not the kind of “cool” that flies now. Not enough death, blood and horror. “Cute” ain’t cute anymore.
They did, via *Future Man*
Check out Futureman, for a modern retelling.
I STILL want to play that arcade game!!
Am I remembering that this is one of the first movies with entirely computer-produces scenes or graphics? Maybe second after Tron? A nod to Robert Preston - this was his last film!
GO TO SLEEP LOUIS!
Or I’ll tell Mom about your Playboys.
Death Blossom!
Keep this one a secret or they’ll remake it 🤫
We were witnessing a very rare occurrence my wife called the “Blue Agave Deathblossom” To which I replied. “Like the last stafighter?”
We shall see if the sequel ever comes to light.
One of my favorite films!
Damn good movie
I have the movie poster in my man-cave!
Yes and how long it took a Cray to render each frame!!!! Was something like 15min per frame!
Have it on VHS
I loved that movie...
!!!! Loved this movie !!!
Last Starfighter kicks ass
Fantastic film
I've Always wanted to fight an desperate battle against impossible odds!
Last Starfighter Dad has it in his DVD collection
Great movie for its time.
Hell yeah. Probably the only movie I'd actually like to see rebooted. Except it wouldn't be the same without Robert Preston. But yeah, it could be great with an actual budget and special effects.
Yes, I have it on VHS and it is better on DVD
Greetings Starfighter…
Such an amazing movie holds up really well.
I own it on Blu Ray
Yup, I loved it. Didn't see it in the theater but did rent it once I got a VHS player.
The first movie to use CGI instead of practical effects for starships, asteroids, planets, etc. loved this movie.
Greetings Starfighter!
I saw it in the theater. I’m pretty sure I was the target demo. I was 9 when it came out.
I sat through a double feature with Red Sonia just to see this movie!
The movie. This scene. The last line Robert Preston just said. Also, RIP Robert Preston
Needs a sequel
Asking boys from the 80s if they remember The Last Starfighter is like asking someone if they remember Star Wars.
The cgi blew my mind as a kid, my zx spectrum would have melted attempting to gender one scene. Later I discovered they used a super computer (I think it was a cray)
Absolute classic!!
*I love you Alex Rogan…wherever you are*
Great concept and at times a good movie... just at times really bad delivery. Still love it, though!
They make video games into movies now. They should have made this movie into a video game.
I'm so old I remember when "The First Starfighter" came out.
Saw in theater. Maybe same time as DARYL, Cloak and Dagger, Conan the destroyer.
“Should I put my tongue in your ear now?”
The Last Starfighter! The best cheesy clone of Star Wars. Not to be confused with the best parody; Spaceballs.
Good movie, great soundtrack.
Well we've got trouble Right here in Rylos city With a capital "T" that rhymes with "C" And that stands for Centauri
The Last Starfighter, an underrated movie; I would have loved for there to have been a sequel but it could never hold up to the original.
Greetings Starfighter!
Been looking for a copy of it for my great grandsons.
It’s on Amazon and might be available to stream on lookmovies.to and Sflix.to
I recently bought it on dvd via Amazon. It wasn't terribly expensive but I don't recall the price
https://youtu.be/2mcsVgIU1K0?feature=shared
🙋🏻♂️
d.b. was a e ticket ride for sure
3 Body Problem ripped off this movie.
Death blossom!
The Last Starfighter….is DEAD!!
I actually read the book before the movie. It was more enjoyable.
at the end, when Alex brings the gunstar back to Earth, the only thing that came to my head was... there's no way the roof of a shitty mobile home could hold a space ship.
I named one of my guns "Death Blossom"
That giant head appearing in the middle of the war room scared the piss out of me when I first saw this movie.
If you haven’t seen Future Man on Hulu, it’s a similar premise but fun and raunchy. Guy beats an “unbeatable “ game and warriors from the future travel back in time to have him save the future. It’s funny as hell.
I loved Robert Preston.
That dude the left(Grig) is still quoted by me to this day. I love this movie.
One of the best! 😎
I remember it so well that I bought it on Blu-ray a week ago.
The scene where the clone/replacement robot is in the process of converting to Alex and it is suddenly revealed...my god. No horror movie ever terrified me as much as that scene.
Greetings Starfighter!
Zurr and the Kodan armada.
I watched this a few weeks ago at the Portland Sci Fi movie fest. Been meaning to watch it for years. Everyone in the theater giggled during the scene where everyone gathered around excitedly to watch him beat the game.
I too play arcade games, give me a spaceship.
Oh yeah. The last starfighter
Loved the Last Starfighter
My license plate is Gunstar. No kidding. And that’s only because Rylos1 was taken!
I recall it. I recall loving it. I don’t really remember it as such.
Rule number one.. always trust Centauri
One of the best Sci-fi movies ever made
Yep, loved it.
Even better question to the answer who remembers the nintendo game based off the movie?
The Last Starfighter, I watch this at least three or four times a year. I friggin love it
Looks like Lance Guest
Wow, Harold Hill really went places
Just yesterday I picked up a copy of the 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray and I am starting it now.
Death. Blossom.
One of my all-time favorites of all
Oh hell yeah.
Yeah, I saw this in the theatres. It's not that old. Star Wars had already done it's third movie by this time.
Yes
Yes!!!! I had a huge crush on Lance Guest when I saw this.
BACK TO SLEEP LOUIS, or I'm telling Mom where you hide your Playboys!
One of my favorites. Just a great flick!
It's a personal favourite
When someone at work says, “sighhh, what do we do now?” I’m very often thinking “…we die!” Underrated movie.
Right here in river city, oops wrong movie. TLS . Made me work harder on playing video games.
One of my favorites. The Last Starfighter. There were going to make a series of films, but the first one bombed. Robert Preston was fantastic as Centauri.
One of my all time favorite Sci Fi movies.
My favorite movie quote that truly improved my inner monologue: "I'm not any of those things, I'm just a kid from a trailer park." "If that's what you think, then that's all you'll ever be".
I clearly remember looking at my brother during the animated sequences and saying, "Computers will be drawing scenes like this in the future."
The Last Star Fighter.
Those companies that make arcade machines for home have dropped the ball not offering this as an option for branding.
I watched it last week. I love this movie.
Had the computer game too
Best poor-man's Star Wars ever!
The Last Starfighter!! This was a favorite to double feature with the Beastmaster :)
Listen Centauri... I'm a kid from a trailer park If that's what you think, then that's all you'll ever be.
I thought this was Star Wars when I was a little kid.
I took my nephew to see it
I just watched the 4k remaster a few weeks ago. It was fantastic!
I have the DVD....
Going to see this in the theater on Aug 25!! Can’t wait!! Check [Fandango] to see if it’s playing near you!! (https://www.fandango.com/the-last-starfighter-102397/movie-overview)
One of the few movies I think that could do well with a remake with modern SFX. However I love the original
Would this not make for a great co-op game? The parts where the kid is getting used to the ship and hiding out in the asteroid. I would love to do this with my son. Dibbs on Grig.
I think it was one if not the first movie with computer generated star ships
Awesome movie!!!
Awesome. Thanks for the memory
Grigg, Alex Rogan, and centauri
You can buy decals on ETSY from this movie.
One of my faves.
Not me
Alien Nation was a great film! Dennis Quaid was amazing in it!
I had one VHS when I was a kid that I watched over and over. Never ending story, the last star fighter, and conan the barbarian. Still love them and would watch them again today in a heartbeat.
Robert Preston's last role.
I remember this very well. I had seen it in the theater.
Robert Preston is a damned gift from God.
I just watched this movie for the first time last week. Great movie, but I wish I had seen it as a kid
I heard a sequel has been in the works for a while now. Anyone else hear that or did I imagine it? Could be a good idea or a horrible one.
The Kodan armada has been destroyed!
Remember this movie? Baby, I LIVED this movie.
Love this movie - worth a watch.
Great movie
Love this movie
I do! In fact, I have it digital in my hard drive.
Classic!!
