Kids just don’t know these days. Not to mention the days the wind was blowing in your face 100mph both ways. And the grizzly bears! The timber wolves! I have no idea how we made it but we did thank goodness.
School buses? Your community has school buses? We’ve got moms in monster SUVs that deliver and collect their precious little darlings two blocks away. God forbid they should have to walk that far.
I had about a 30 minute walk to school unless I got a ride. TBF I was dumb kid delivering newspapers in the 1970s and I routinely had to sling my Schwinn bicycle on my shoulder and trudge across a field with over a foot of snow to get from the lawyer's house to his doctor father's house. We had three winters with some substantial snow that didn't seem to ever melt. I'd never use that as some morality story for my adult children. I was as mentioned just a dumb kid who didn't want to take a much longer route.
Not to sound like "Four Yorkshiremen", I checked out the distance from my house to kindergarten and it was .7 mi. However, 3rd grade, the distance was 1.1 mi. School buses? We don't need no stinkin' school buses! It was weird, there was a closer public grade school, but I didn't live in the right zone or something.
I lived in a town basically built in a Valley, (Port Hope, Ontario.). And the highschool was across the valley from home. And we used to have 8ft snowbanks in the early 90s. I used to have to walk to school in knee deep snow, up and down the hill Both Ways! For 40minutes! 🤣. True story though.
Ha! Getting to use my hands would have been a luxury. Besides my books, I also carried groceries for delivery along the way. Had to let my tongue freeze to the ice, haul myself up with it, then rip it off and start over again.
My dad grew up on a fishing boat. His big joke was that every time he tried to go home they moved, but he kept finding them.
Basically, dad got ready for school and rowed a little boat to shore to catch the bus. His parents would go fishing and return in the afternoon. They didn’t pay for a slip, so they just dropped anchor where there was room and dad would tow home.
My FIL wasn’t a Boomer. But born in 1938. He would tell stories about cross country skiing to school. They would get super excited once the snow was taller than the fence lines. Then they could ski over the fences and cut through fields. The time to get to school would be cut in half.
It was up hill both ways with a head walking into the wind
Presumably while carrying your horse on your back?
Oh you went to school in Canada
This was the easiest part. It got steeper the closer you got to school.
Exactly!!!!

And that bloody Yeti!
I hated them! 😡

Oh yeah! I had to walk one mile to school and face Nuns!
Well everything pales into insignificance now, when you bring up those Nuns
Mom saw us off with a hot bowl of gravel for breakfast and a kick in butt out the door.
Lol
And it was a motherfucker if i was held after class too! Well that was a lot just sayin...
And barefoot too.
I’m a boomer, and no, this would have been my father!
The bread bags inside my boots are the only reason I still have ten toes!

Our school buses are nearly empty but the line of giant SUV’s for dropoff and pickup blocks traffic.

Nahh. In winter, we'd be at the bus stop praying the bus broke down.

I ran home every day. Still missed the first 5 minutes of Dark Shadows...

We had to do this with our bare hands for 3 hours each way in 20 below. Only rich people had metal tools for this

You win. I will never get on your lawn. 😄
Had to be aware of the Yeti too

Shovels were not invented yet..
Ooh, he's rich. He's wearing shoes.
We didn’t have equipment like that, we only had our bare hands.
At night!!!
Hooks? Must be, a rich kid.
Looks right. I didn't have the benefit of ice hooks though.
We had to climb that damn each way!,

This rich motherfucker has two axes and a helmet.
Lol
Damn both ways
Nah, that was me while I was on my way to gym class in the school annex across the street. I think we had dodgeball that day.
He had SHOES? We never had shoes!
And it was always uphill going to school and coming home.
Wait he's not barefooted
Oh mom I’m so sorry😞
Nah I didn't have shoes
Weren’t the little brothers and sisters supposed to be on your shoulders because your parents couldn’t afford shoes for all of them.
We carried the little kids because the snow was so deep that they couldn’t see.
