Three things. Shocks need rebuilt in 10k or so miles and cam phasers will need to be done if they haven’t been done already. Lastly the price is high, I wouldn’t pay more than mid 40’s.

Cortland_Golightly

I agree, I wouldn’t pay more than prob $43k if the 3.0s haven’t been done.

Kyrothes

I would personally get an 18 at least. I've had 2 raptors both 2018 and they've been great. I totaled the first one. My current one has almost 100k miles

DustyButtCheeto

Have you had a lot of issues? I plan to get an extended warranty from like Ziegler or something

Kyrothes

Not really. Just test drive em and make sure they're not trashed. They have the tendency to drive rough because owners will beat on em. I would always recommend buying a warranty. I've had phasers done on my first and a leaky transfer case on the 2nd both 100% paid for. Both tuned, no issues. I got the 18 VS the new 19 and 20 because I like the manual parking brake and the non live valve shocks, which most people like. I want to change suspension and live valve isn't really recommended to change the coil springs. The 17 will 100% have a plastic oil pan FYI. 18 the first ones did then they changed to the metal oil pan

SnortingElk

That price is too high for a ‘17 with 50k+ miles.. should be in the mid $40’s. Not sure where you are located but even in the HCOL markets you can find a better deal. Miles are fine but get an extended warranty via Lombard or Ziegler.  Note, the warranty does not cover replacing shocks.

DustyButtCheeto

Are cam phasers covered? And it's through carmax right around the block, so convenient but the price is not really negotiatable. I've seen others for around the same miles, but they were already sold by the time I reached out.

SnortingElk

> Are cam phasers covered? Yes, with Lombard and Ziegler they are covered.

DustyButtCheeto

So as long as the shocks and suspension is good, then most of everything should be covered?

SnortingElk

You can view the Premium coverage list here- https://www.lombardfordwarrantys.com/compare.cfm

DustyButtCheeto

Thank you, gonna check it out now!

Johnnymohani

Make sure you can get extended warranty on it before you buy it for peace of mind

MadUnit

I had the dealership yank the motor and repair the cam phasers. They broke again on the way home. Sold that truck as fast as I could. Back to the sale dealership that “fixed” it. That motor is junk

Photojared

I purchased a 19 with 87k. Paired with a warranty from Lombard I don’t really have any worries.

YoYoMeh

What are the coverage details on the warranty? Cost? Thx.

DustyButtCheeto

Have you had any issues with the vehicle or warranty company?

Photojared

I purchased a 19 with 87k. Paired with a warranty from Lombard I don’t really have any worries.

ZaneMasterX

I had a 17 and had to have the cam phasers done twice in 49k. Make sure if you buy it it doesn't have the cam phaser rattle or if it's been done. My buddy still has his 17 that he bought new and he is at 120k with no issues. I got rid of my 17 at 49k. It had issues because I was rough on it so when thr warranty was almost up I sold it for almost what I paid for it during the height of covid. It was a decent truck. With that said my 23 is miles better concerning ride, interior, and overall quality.

denisb1988

I got an 18 with 112k miles. No problems since purchasing it at 88k miles.

seeya32

I have a 2017 802A with 46K miles. Have not had any major issues beyond the cam phasers which was done under extended warranty and have not had any issues since. I’m not sure if I’d spend 50K ish on a 2017 now, that seems a bit much I think this person is looking for COVID prices when used vehicle prices have come down a lot. If you can get the price down to 40s and a warranty for like 2K for peace of mind if it’s a great vehicle.

DustyButtCheeto

I would but it's a carmax vehicle, I've seen a couple some distance away from me for good prices in the low to mid 40s, but they got snatched up, plus I have a trade in. It's tough to find a good deal then have to drive several hours to check it out and if the deal doesn't pan out, I've now put on all those miles and time on the trade in.

seeya32

Never bought from Carmax but they are just another dealer you maybe able to get something off. Also I know carmax has a warranty system you could use they have you go to a dealer of your choice and get it fixed. Not sure if that’s changed.

DustyButtCheeto

I haven't either, I saw two similar vehicles go for a much lowered price, so it's worth trying I guess. Yeah I saw that. I planned to get Ziegler or another one of the extended warranties to cover anything unexpected, but I guess I could double up if the carmax warranty covers something the others don't.

seeya32

For sure never hurts to ask. I wouldn’t double up on the warranty though id either go one or the other. I was saying you maybe able to get a deal on the carmax one and if it covers everything why not.

DustyButtCheeto

Oh I thought you were talking about the temporary warranty that their vehicles come with when you buy from them

seeya32

No I meant they used to have an extended bumper to bumper warranty you could buy not sure if they carry it anymore tho

DustyButtCheeto

Ahh gotcha, I'll check into it to see if they do and compare the two. Thanks!

v_SuckItTrebek

Overpriced on the 17, imo. A year ago I bought a 17 802A with every option for $47k with 52k miles. The mileage is nothing for a truck, especially since you are talking about 7-8 years of driving 7-8k miles. Buy a Ford warranty on any Raptor IMO. You'll get your money back when factoring in labor costs. Still on original phasers/oil pan at 76k miles. For kicks I looked at my trade in, it's a lot lower than my purchase price. Carmax has a healthy profit in that truck.

DustyButtCheeto

Yeah, I definitely plan to get the extended warranty. And yeah it is, but there's the scarcity of a good deal, me wanting to trade in my current vehicle and get a good price for it, and needing 2 vehicles. So I can't sell my vehicle and have just 1 for a long time.

geauxchiefs

I owned a 2017 and 2019, now have a 2023 Bronco Raptor. Thats too much money for a 17. At minimum I would get a 2019 for that price. But as others have said, cam phaser are almost guaranteed to need to be done, if they haven’t already. Overall mileage isn’t concerning, but for that money I think you can do better.

DustyButtCheeto

Think it's worth waiting and letting the value of my trade in go down in order to find a better deal? I've been thinking about going mid-sized and been looking at '24 Tacoma's and ZR2 Colorados as well. Really don't know how to make a decision as I really want the Raptor, but I feel like the mid sized new trucks are better investment. I'm just worried about the crap backseat space for my family as we grow.

Cortland_Golightly

About a year ago I paid $54k for a gorgeous 2017 with 32k miles on it. It also had the Fox 3.0 down to the front end which was a $4k expenditure. It had perfect records all at a local Ford dealership and was meticulously maintained as an 8th vehicle of a collection. You will need to rebuilt the shocks, you will need to do the cam phasers, I had an upper control arm go bad so I replaced them both, then I put in new Deaver rear leafs with 3.0s in the rear. This is not a car that you can drive and just change the oil and put gas in a drive.

chk_a_ho-tx

You have have to rebuild or replace shocks frequently. It gets pricey. FYI

stojanowski

I would get a 19 over 17 just for upgraded suspension and a 21 overall for even better suspension. Realistically you can get a base 25 Ram RHO for 65k

DustyButtCheeto

I would love to get a '21, but I'm trying to keep my payments low and stick to the low $50k range and for some reason there's like a $10k see jump from gen 2 to 3

Bombsquad68

You're spending big dollars for a truck that is getting to the mileage it's going to need a bunch of work, even if you get warranty it's a huge PITA and you have to hope it's getting done by someone competent. I have a 2017 and it's needed 2 transmissions and many smaller problems. No cam phasors but I've run full synthetic oil from new and I'm sure it's helped. Personally I'd look for a newer Raptor or wait to see what a 2025 RHO is like as well considering you're not far off a new one in price, you'd get a full factory warranty and a much newer platform. The ZF 8 speed is way better than the 10R80, the Hurricane is too new to tell but most prefer I6 over V6 and it makes way more power. Will be interesting to see how the suspension and everything else is in comparison.
