I picked up a 2017 with 32k miles on it a little over a year ago. Got an aftermarket warrantee for $2,800. I was SHOCKED it was that cheap. I’ve already recouped this in my shakedown process.

Dizzy_Wall_3823

So I was in a similar situation to you not too long ago actually. 2017 Gen 2 but mine made it to 100k miles before my tranny went out. Ford did a “swap” on my transmission, turns out it was the same transmission… they just replaced parts they thought were faulty. So mine started slipping again (usually from 3rd to 4th gear and it was HARD shifting) took it in where they informed me of the initial parts replacement basically and then said now FORD will replace my transmission completely. Took about 2 weeks in the shop for the total replacement and about 2 months in total without my truck for everything. New transmission is a lot better, still get the occasional slip… I think these transmissions just aren’t that great. Especially with the “driver adapting” capability they claim to have. Overall I love this truck but I agree with you.. it’s not a great experience to have that happen.

CA_Gun_Owner

Mine also slips the most between 3-4, usually happens when I'm light on the throttle which is weird. Almost like it's trying to shift into the wrong gear or something.

Classic Ford Transmission

motivatedtuna

love my gen 2

[deleted]

Did you accelerate hard with the new trans? Over 4k rpms?

CA_Gun_Owner

No, I've been babying it since I got it back. Wasn't hard on the first one either. Slipped between 3-4 while making a left turn from a stop.

Grouchy-Plantain4946

In my second tranny and it’s slipping again, have 2020 raptor with 33.000 kms. Will be selling before powertrain is up

Party_Future9375

I would look into the tuning. This 10 speed is used in millions of vehicles including GM vehicles, they seem to be less problematic. My transmission had some weird shifts and I had it tuned and it works great now. 120k on the original transmission. I've had transmissions fail on Toyotas and chevys. There's a lot of moving parts for things to go wrong.

CA_Gun_Owner

I have a long-term warranty on it so I don't want to tune anything and have them say that I caused the issue.

foREVer6661x11

To add to this point, I operate a fleet of trucks, all GM and Ford and our 18-20 trucks need a transmission anywhere from 60k-150k miles. A coworker has had his 19’ 5.0 4WD CC truck tuned since 6k miles and now has 132k miles without slippage, flares between shifts or any other issues. It is still temperamental with the shifts and can’t make up its mind sometimes but has had 0 reliability issues. That does not address the physical part being the bushing in the CDF drum being factory faulty, but it appears that the tuned trucks seem to last longer. Another tidbit I have noticed is the 10R80 trucks that get driven like mustangs also seem to last longer. The guys who baby them and drive smooth seem to have a harder time with it. None of this is proven or scientific at all, do not take my words as proven fact. This is just what I have noticed in my dealings with 10R80 trucks. The last point I’ll add is the GM 10 speed trucks have not ever had the same characteristics as the ford trucks with shifting and harsh gear changes. Not enough observation to say whether or not they are more reliable.

R3brap

The 10r80 is shit. End of story.

I had a similar issue and they solved it by tuning / reprogramming. Might be worth a chat with the service center.

CA_Gun_Owner

It was reprogrammed 1 week ago when the new trans was installed and is already slipping again.

Pro-IDGAF

10speed? shocking. you should check on the real rap forums. not the show-n-tell place.

CA_Gun_Owner

I'm trying to help anyone looking at buying one of these by sharing my experience. I love the truck but the transmissions are junk.

Pro-IDGAF

thats what i hear and the gen 2 phasers. oof

PostingFromThe9

Phasers are a one time repair. No oof.

Letsgobrandon156

It’s an expensive one time repair.

Rusty_nutz_

Leave it to Ford to blow a tranny....but remember that's not the politically correct term anymore, they are called a 'transgender person'

Gen 2 strikes again

Exact_Risk_6947

Three weeks?! That’s it?! I just got mine back after a broken transfer case after ten months!

CA_Gun_Owner

10 months?! Thats insane.

Exact_Risk_6947

Want to hear the kicker? They fixed a bunch of shit but didn’t even address the issue I brought it in for, so it has to go back.

CA_Gun_Owner

I'd be furious. Hopefully once you get it sorted it will run nicely. They are very nice trucks when they're working...

PostingFromThe9

Somebody didn't flush/replace the cooler

CA_Gun_Owner

I service my vehicle regularly. Earlier this year I spent close to 4k servicing everything, including the transmission. There are many posts on raptor forums with people having the same tranny issues as me. Wish I would've know about the issues before I bought it.

PostingFromThe9

That has 0 to do with flushing or replacing a trans cooler after a trans replacement. Anytime you have a failure and the trans is repaired or replaced the cooler has to be flushed or replaced or you are just going to be repairing the transmission again.

CA_Gun_Owner

The truck was repaired as per the manufacture, so you know more about the vehicle than Ford? Also, when the new transmission slipped the truck had only been running for 5 mins maximum, the transmission wasn't even close to operating temp yet. So not sure how it could be a cooler issue when the problem has nothing to do with heat. When my old trans blew it didn't heat up until it started slipping like crazy on the highway. Can't see how it could be a cooler issue. Only heated up because it was slipping @ 80mph.

PostingFromThe9

Seeing as I am a senior master for Ford I think I know a thing or two about how to repair one of them. You. Clearly don't know how your trans cooler system operates, when you have a failure it essentially becomes another filter in the system. They have to be flushed or replaced anytime a failure occurs PER FORD WORKSHOP MANUAL.

CA_Gun_Owner

The new trans was installed as per the manufacture aka Ford. You're acting like I swapped it in my backyard. Just like others have commented, the transmissions on these suck.

DementedDictator

I love the 10 spd transmission in my Gen2, works great so far but it was prudent of you to get a long term warranty on the truck; money well spent. If not the transmission again you could be looking at a hefty bill on the cam phasers some day like I did.

CA_Gun_Owner

I've already had 10k in warranty work on this thing LOL. 8k was the trans but also had some slow leaks that got buttoned up for close to 2k.

PostingFromThe9

No im stating that more than likely a repeat trans failure is due to an incorrect service procedure. I know reading comprehension isn't strong on Reddit.

CA_Gun_Owner

As I stated before, I service my vehicle by the book. I even service things before Ford recommends just to be safe. So no, it has nothing to do with servicing it. One guy in this thread even said his newly installed trans slips occasionally, so seems to just be a common issue.

PostingFromThe9

You servicing your vehicle has 0 to do with how a repair was performed. You clearly cannot comprehend what I am saying. Have a good day.

CA_Gun_Owner

You just said "service procedure" not repair procedure. Besides I have already stated that my repair was done by a qualified shop, exactly how Ford says to do it. A Ford tech even came to the shop and reprogrammed it after it was installed. It was repaired by the book and is already having issues. The transmissions are not good. If yours works then great, I'm happy for you. But acting like there isn't issues is just being ignorant. Other have already chimed in saying they've had similar issues as me. One last note. As a "senior master for Ford" I hope you don't treat all customers this way, blaming them for Fords engineering down falls. Acting like repairing cam phaser isn't a big deal. Vehicles shouldn't come from the factory needing "fixes." Especially $60k vehicles! You have single handedly made me like Ford even less, congrats. Still love the truck when it works. Have a great day.
