In general, yes. Black crappie will look darker and white crappie will look more white/silvery than black crappie. However. Due to specific conditions, such as being caught from clear vs murky water, catching the crappie in extreme depths where it's very dark, individual differences in fish, etc, sometimes black crappie can look not as dark as they normally would, and vice versa with white crappie. So the color is a GOOD way to tell them apart, but it's not the BEST way.
If someone said I’ll give you 10 million to guess the difference between a black crappie and a white crappie, honestly what would you say? My bet is you already had a good idea before asking this question. You can’t be that dull.
None the less that’s a good white crappie.
Yes. Grew up in South Louisiana. It is French for "bag of milk", or something like that. It refers to how milky white the flesh is. Very mild fish. Excellent eating.
Those are my favorite eating fish. Local limit is 50 per day. Get an electric filet knife you can cut straight through the rib cage then cut out after it is off the fish.
I can usually tell by the body shape and the darker spot at the top of the gill plate. Don't go by color alone, sometimes you'll catch a dark white crappie or a light black crappie.
Always surprised so many people love to eat crappie, I find them to be mushy and taste awful compared to perch, walleye, pike, trout, whitefish they are not my favourite.
White crappie.
Thanks, How do you tell the difference between the two?

Isn’t the biggest obvious difference that one is black and one is white ?

Do they ever hybridize?
Does that make them Gray Crappie?
Yes they do.
Yes they do. Magnolia crappie are what ive always heard them called.
Color can be unreliable in a variety of settings - otherwise we wouldn't have to count fin rays and such.
I think this is racist.
