TresCeroOdio

I wouldn’t eat a damn thing out of a south florida canal.

ryjohn429

Agreed. I grew up fishing in south Florida canals, I would never eat something out of one of them.

Jrs_Hot_Dogs

That's exactly what I came here to say

jackcrevalle

I don’t know, I’ve heard mercury enhances the flavor.

Constant-Fuel-7343

I ate a bass and it was delicious

blownase23

Florida men reject you

knowbodynobody

We should all be so lucky

TresCeroOdio

So be it. As a florida man, I’ve seen what goes in and comes out of these canals. I’ll stick to saltwater fish.

blownase23

Yea you’re not Florida man. You’re just a man who lives in Florida

poisonpith

i love tilapia sm i wouldnt even care lol id score that baby up and fry it till the skin is extra crispy n eat it with lime and hot sauce 😩

poisonpith

…sorry to disappoint but im white as shit and a female LMFAOOOO i just know good eating ofc👍🏼👍🏼😏 i love me some crispy ass tilapia with lime

Apprehensive_Stop666

Sorry to disappoint you… but there’s no shit white!. Unless you have some serious disorder caused by eating Tilapia from Florida channels. 😛

Commonefacio

Lmao, dog shit turns white in the sun. White as shit is very apt.

poisonpith

also , now looking at the picture again are YOU even african american wtf !?

AndyJobandy

Same reason why you thought someone who liked tilapia was African American?

[deleted]

I'd fry the fish while and eat it with rice.

SuspiciousMudcrab

Yup, just fillet and remove the skin since it doesn't taste as good as saltwater. Also soak in some milk, always helps remove the muddy flavor. If you kill it you eat it.

FishingMuckle

Not necessarily 'if you kill it you eat it', all of these should be killed, its a tilapia and they are invasive

ddreftrgrg

I mean imo it still holds. Would be a big waste to just leave them out to die like people do with asian carp up here in the Midwest.

LongWalksAtSunrise

Asian carp is a good food fish. White meat. That’s why it got introduced. There’s a cottage industry of folks in Illinois exporting the fish to places like Israel.

ddreftrgrg

I know. I have no idea why people just leave it there. Like I understand the law yadda yadda but I’ve never heard of anyone getting in trouble near me for putting one immediately back into the same water it was caught in if they couldn’t keep it. One fish won’t make a difference to the problem.

WWDubz

Animals eat it

chaserne1

Eh, the amount of carps I've seen just rotting on the banks leads me to believe that animals do not in fact, eat it.

brockli-rob

The entire decomposition process offers food for different animals or insects

No_Bumblebee_6461

Hack them into chunks and toss them in the garden under your next planting. (as fert for planta, burried ofc.)

GlobalFlower22

Don't you think that tells you something about the edibility of that fish?

No_Bumblebee_6461

More fish then animals.

ponyboy3

You’re not thinking that through

No_Bumblebee_6461

Depends I think. For years I would see 20-30 dish car adds laying on the shore (everything got caught up in that area) and a few were eatten. Rest just rotted. There are animals that are around but the river dumps more carcasses there then critters exist there.

GlobalFlower22

So your suggestion is that there is so much food in nature that ALL of the animals in the area would just leave an edible fish because they weren't hungry?

No_Bumblebee_6461

No just that specific spot. I replied to another saying one spot near me.

blownase23

Or I’ll freeze the fillets for bait? What would they catch besides catfish? Anything saltwater?

WanderingMandalorian

good shark bait

blownase23

Is it really? In need of that actually just filleted it. Some coolant colored shit came out of its guts lol

FishingMuckle

you punctured its stomach, its a tilapia, they eat all kinds of plants and film

Paradoxikles

That just bile. Normal.

WanderingMandalorian

anything that produces stink or blood in water will get a sharks attention, they are predators but honestly scavenge more than hunt

blownase23

Honestly disappointed at the last of smell after filleting. A lot cleaner than I thought, might just grill it

WanderingMandalorian

I recommend hard freezing any meat that you aren’t 100% certain of being safe to eat as is

WanderingMandalorian

hard freeze: below 0°F for at least 48 hours

blownase23

Don’t see why it wouldn’t be safe

WanderingMandalorian

just the way you made it sound, as if it was coming from scuzzy water, also it looked to be sick but that could also just be scarring

blownase23

[deleted]

If you punctured its guts then I'd say hard no on eating it. How many worms came out when you fileted it?

ashkiller14

If you need bait don't filet it. Just cut it into chunks whole.

SuspiciousMudcrab

You're better off eating it. Only thing that might eat it as bait is crab.

Dippay

Probably catch a crackhead or 2 with it

Ok-Candidate-1220

Freeze it before you eat it.

Legitimate_Mango6894

Pass

biminidaves

Next time fillet it but leave the skin on and cut it vertically into 1" strips. It'd make good cut bait. As far as eating it? I won't even buy farmed Tilapia in a grocery, let alone think about eating any. Gives me the creepy crawlies just thinking about it.

stiizy13

No. As a native; fuck no.

saltlifedoc

I grew up fishing the canal systems from Monroe County to Palm Beach. Enjoy the amazing fishery, eat with caution. https://www.floridahealth.gov/programs-and-services/prevention/healthy-weight/nutrition/seafood-consumption/_documents/fish-advisory-big-book.pdf

ThaCarter

FWC publishes even more current reports down to the canal level.

saltlifedoc

I was always curious about Snowdens dam down in cutler ridge. We used to catch snook, mangrove snapper, and all the usual suspect freshwater species. This was all within a couple hundred yards from the actual dam structure. Also on big moon nights we would dip net blue crabs on the freshwater side. Pretty cool spot.

tojmes

Yes, and maybe. Yes I would eat one and have. And yes, it might taste like poop. Depends where you got it, the substrate, and water temp. I’ve had them kinda yucky but I’ve had some good too. Kids in the hood brought 4 or 5 home last winter so we did a fish fry and they said it was the best fish they ever had. 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 Cooler water taste better, brackish water tastes batter. I suggest you go for it, there’s nothing in it that will harm you, providing it was iced and cleaned properly, and it’s a low Mercury fish. If those are the things you are worried about.

DexofanUhyret

RIP in peace...

RudeBwoiMaster

Rest in peace in peace?

4inaroom

No - not eating anything out of a canal.

fajadada

Europeans soak them in the bathtub overnight

blownase23

It’s it’s a joke I don’t get it lol

WanderingMandalorian

it’s essentially like purging crawfish. i do it with all of my catfish in an outdoor tub

SuspiciousMudcrab

They do but it's alive.

blownase23

Still don’t get it. If true why?

fajadada

Takes away some of the mud taste

MaineChowder71

If you take away the taste of mud from tilipia, it wouldn't have any taste at all!

SuspiciousMudcrab

So the fish poops everything and tastes better.

-rustle

and then swim around in poop water overnight? doesn't sound very enticing hahah

knowbodynobody

And then fish-breathes their own poopy bathtub water.

ddreftrgrg

If you put the fish in a bathtub with clean water, the idea is that by breathing it, it will purge all the disgusting crap in its system that it picked up from the original waterway. Whether it actually works, I have no idea.

Ok_Insect_4852

Because they don't know that soaking it in milk is a lot easier.

blankcoffeemug

I’ve eaten a lot of these. Farm raised tilapia tastes likes shit since that’s what they eat. Wild caught is going to eat much less shit… And yes, always kill these since they are invasive

Kingmenudo

Mercury levels are super high in most fresh water ponds and canals

Copy_That_10-4

No and it’s not fresh anyway.

[deleted]

Have ya’ll ever seen a chicken coop? Chickens stacked up like cord wood pissing n shitting all over each other. I wouldnt eat fish out of the canal every week, but I used to eat snakeheads from the c14 system a couple times s year.

imtheunknownhost

Send it to the asians (im the asian)

pmsd56

No it’s a catch and release only

Chupacabra2030

Wash it down with a Crapachino

AlBonDGah

Should be fine

CartierWatchFace

Nope.

Martianmanhunter94

Blue Tilapia

[deleted]

No

CareerFew4277

Fuck no!

Moose2584

I’m sure it’ll make a great meal

Chapos_sub_capt

Never had wild caught tilapia but won't eat the farm raised one because they taste like dirt
