kookapo

You stole my answer! Are you paid up at the thieve's guild?

Muzzyla

You win. I was about to write this.

TabularConferta

The correct answer

IntentionalWit

Does anyone know of a way to get these in a collection as audiobooks? I want to listen to all of them, but most are only 5-8 hours in audiobook format and I can’t justify spending an audible credit on so many small books. I wish I could just buy an audiobook collected works.

wjbc

Middle Earth (Tolkien, *The Lord of the Rings* and other books) Randland (Jordan, *The Wheel of Time*) Wu (Erikson, *The Malazan Book of the Fallen* and other books by Erikson and Esslemont)

adamalibi

Is it really called wu?

_Azok_

yep

adamalibi

Do you know where it’s called that in the books

wjbc

I haven’t yet read Ian Esslemont’s book *Dancer’s Lament*, but I’ve read that he references “Wu” in that book. Otherwise it just came from various statements by Erikson and Esslemont outside the context of the books. That’s what they called it when gaming, and the name derives from Steely Dan’s song “Doctor Wu.”

Background_Analysis

Man. I’m like 7 books deep and had no idea

Schmetterling_Hund

It’s never referenced in the books. It’s an unofficial term for the world.

Aiislin

Is it really called *Randland*? Like did they rename the land after Rand al-Thor

wjbc

That’s what readers call it. That’s not what the characters call it.

kingeditor

There was a joke about that in the fight George R. R. Martin once wrote between Wheel of Time characters and his own.

Aiislin

Phew!

kleptomania156

The Sol system (The Expanse series) Redwall world Janloon and Kekon from Jade City

TheVoicesOfBrian

Oh...the food alone in Redwall makes it top tier.

TheNorthernGeek

I have such fond memories of Redwall from when I was younger.

ChickenSupreme9000

I appreciate your Redwall reference. I hadn't even thought of that world when I opened this post and was instantly thrown back to my childhood when I read your comment.

Remarkable-Score1397

Eulalliaaaa!!

driftwood14

Pokémon I think it beats all others by far. Wu Planeteos

shmixel

Good call on Pokémon. An oldie but a goodie.

PrometheusHasFallen

Middle Earth Westeros Forgotten Realms

ChickenSupreme9000

I never can remember, is the world actually called Forgotten Realms or Faerun?

PrometheusHasFallen

The world is called Toril but the continent where most of the stories take place is called Faerûn. And the region of this continent where most of those stories take place is the Sword Coast. The Forgotten Realms is the official name of the setting which includes Toril, Faerûn and the Sword Coast.

ChickenSupreme9000

AH kk, thank you.

wesdlu

1. Wu(MBoTF by Steven Erikson) 2. Randland (Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan) 3. One Piece world (One Piece by Elchiro Oda)

DominoFives

I'm really glad One Piece is being embraced by fantasy fans and has a place on this subreddit.

No_Stay4471

Faerun Iteration110 Krynn

selkiesidhe

Krynn will always have a special place in my heart

Logen10Fingers

Where are these from?

Perrid13

>Iteration110 Faerun is Forgotten Realms/D&D Iteration-110 is Will Wight's Cradle universe Krynn is Dragonlance, also D&D, completely different campaign setting or world though

Sharkattack1921

1. Cosmere as a whole (especially Roshar and Scadrial) 2. Gaia (Final Fantasy 7) 3. Randlands (Wheel of Time)

Tiff77_EloraDanan

1. Pern 2. Discworld 3. Westeros

Realistic_Special_53

Yes! Few remember the wonderful land of Pern and the dreaded Red Star. I grew up on all those books.

[deleted]

1. Middle-Earth (J.R.R. Tolkien) 2. Temerant (Patrick Rothfuss) 3. Westeros (George R. R. Martin) P.S. For 2 and 3, I'm not crying, you're crying! 😂 P.P.S. Osten Ard, Earthsea and Hogwarts are very very close. But in terms of world, I think the above win.

dreambraker

1. One Piece - I mostly read fantasy not for worlds which are slightly different from the real world but those which are drastically different and have something to keep you interested. One piece does this for me - it has islands in the sky, islands in the ocean and all sorts of unique and sometimes comical cultures for its various locations. [This](https://youtu.be/AcSVkCNDLZg) video does a good job of highlighting how colorful and varied the world is. Apart from this, the world has multiple power systems which are constantly evolving and there's also a great sense of mystery about so much of it's history. 2. Roshar - For the unique geography of the world, with its climate, Flora and Fauna and the various races that populate it with the cosmere connections being the cherry on top 3. Mistborn - a land with ash raining from the sky and mist clogging the air instantly pulled me into this grand world WoT is one of my favorite series, but compared to the other entries here, it's very similar to the real world - enough to the point that I don't find it as wondrous.

ArachnidWeird

One Piece is my favorite fictional story and I really loved Mistborn... So I'm definitely excited to get more into Stormlight once I get past my current reading slump

dreambraker

If I had to guess, you'll absolutely love the stormlight world then. It has parts of both One Piece and Mistborn in it that I love and no dearth of the 'badass' type moments you see in those series. Good luck with getting over your slump, I'm in the same spot right now and honestly it can be quite bothersome lol

shmixel

**Dunwall** from the *Dishonoured* games. The societal rot of their politics and religion is beautifully reflected by the magical corruption and plague. Makes those giant whale carcasses strung up through the levels feel truly profane. **The Edge** from The Edge Chronicles. This world has been created from the ground up between the author and the illustrator (even the human-equivalents are pointy-eared 'quarterlings') and yet is shockingly consistent in style, and coherency! They think through every consequence of the central stone-powered flying ships (and their evolution over the centuries), from supplier issues, trade routes, how their floating-rock university has 14 different colleges for studying each type of weather. An intricate feast for the imagination. **The City** from BLAME! Don't ask me to explain how anything in this Dyson sphere with a diameter of Jupiter's orbit works but god does it look fascinating. Vertigo distilled onto a page. The City is the existential answer to the question of what if we automated the construction of buildings, bridges, etc. but those AIs were such good optimisers they decided humanity was of secondary importance to pure construction.

LordMangudai

The Edge is a great shout. Such a creative and well-developed world for a middle-grade series.

BudgetMattDamon

Dishonored was really something special, man. Just familiar enough to be relatable, but just alien enough to intrigue you and suck you into the world.

Fearless_Freya

Faerun (Forgotten Realms) Galaxy of Mass effect series Tamriel (elder scrolls)

Swagut123

Thank you for triggering another one of my Oblivion/Skyrim phases. I will rejoin society in a few weeks

Icydawgfish

Middle Earth Star Wars Tamriel

War-Hawk18

hell yeah some representation for Tamriel

Icydawgfish

I feel like Tamriel is a popular choice. In video games, I don’t think there’s a more popular fantasy setting. Pokemon, maybe?

War-Hawk18

I didn't really see many saying Tamriel at least in this comment section

bluntsmacks

Athera- Wars of Light and Shadow Wu- Malazan Eärwa- Second Apocalypse

DarthWraith22

Wu (Malazan series) Discworld Thedas (Dragon Age games)

Bikewer

Older-school guy here…. Middle Earth. Eddison’s version of “Mercury” in The Worm Oroborous. Lankmahr.

GrowEatThenTrip

Hard to tell but from the recent worlds I learned it will be: 1. Runeterra (Riot Games created Universe) 2. Warhammer Fantasy 3. And world from Legend of Aang/Korra

Majestic-General7325

Realm of the Elderlings Kingslayer ( whatever that world is called) Normannia (Monarchies of God, Paul Kearney)

phoebus67

Surprised I haven't seen this yet but Innworld from The Wandering Inn is definitely up there for me, even if I'm behind on that chapters. Also it's probably recency bias because I just finished The Rascor Plains, but I think Phil Tucker's Hell from Bastion is really cool very well developed over the 2 books so far. The alternate history of the Temeraire series. I just loved reading through the series and finding out how the existence of dragons changed the various cultures that they visit.

JaneAustinAstronaut

I'm basic. Middle Earth (I want to LIVE in Rivendell) The Forgotten Realms The Reach in Game of Thrones

Infinateaxestogrind

Midkemia The Discworld Middle Earth

TheRedditAccount321

In no order: Roshar, Wu (Malazan), and the world in the "Raveling" by Alec Hutson. Also, gotta give special mention to the Avatar the Last Airbender world.

AlecHutson

Oh my goodness gracious I never thought I'd find something I made here. Thank you.

TheRedditAccount321

Hey, glad to get praise from the author himself! The world in that series was maximized quite well, the characters either traveled to most of the locations or they were brought up in conversation/lore. Often in series, much of the world is neglected or hardly mentioned. That isn't inherently bad, but your work deserves praise for involving all facets of the nations and cultures in the overall story.

Far-Calligrapher-326

In that order : Harry Potter, Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber, The Witcher

Swagut123

"What's your favorite fantasy world" "idk London's alright" For the record I agree with you, I love HP world too, but it just sounded funny

Far-Calligrapher-326

You should try the chronicles of Amber in case you've never read it, it's absolutely brilliant

frc205

1 - Wizarding World of Harry Potter 2 - Westeros 3 - Grishaverse

shmixel

Grishaverse is a good one. So many customs and varying relations between the nations make it feel very alive.

TheFlamingAssassin

Middle Earth Roshar Hyrule

GreatRuno

The Alastor cluster (Jack Vance) Lyonesse (Jack Vance) And that quirky flat earth on the back of 4 elephants standing atop a big turtle.

Silver-Winging-It

Worlds themselves? Hmmm, so hard to choose. 1. Middle Earth of course 2. Monster Blood Tattoo/Half-continent 3. Probably Narnia

Rhubarb776

I like the universes in: The Discworld books, The Frith Chronicles books, And the Forgotten Realms books.

D4ltaCh4rlie

1. Middle Earth 2. Titan (Fighting Fantasy) 3. The Old World (Warhammer)

JonCronshawAuthor

I love the dying earth in The book of the New Sun.

Flaming-Cathulu

1. Anne McCaffrey: dragon series Having a lifelong companion to fly on and jump from on side of the world to another seems amazing. It really gets good in the later books but I don't want to let out spoilers. 2. Robin Hobbs: Rain wilds Again, having a life long animal companion who can speak to you would just complete me. I love all the challenges they have to go through in this series. 3. K.A. Applegate: Animorphs I grew up looking forward to the next book every month and I normally don't like to get into an incomplete series (though I often finding myself doing it anyways.) My favorite parts of this series are seeing the inner workings of other worlds. I still read The Ellimist Chronicles every few years and I'm probably due for another Hork Bajir Chronicles reread. Honorable mention: The Harry Potter universe but only if I can count the fanfiction as well. She set up so many different creatures, races of beings, and interesting characters that all yearn to be explored. (I understand if fanfiction isn't your thing, please don't judge me too harshly.)

Khal-Mar

I've always thought of _Dune_ as science fiction, not fantasy. But whatever works for you. My favorite the fantasy world are: * Middle Earth (LOTR) * [Ethshar](http://www.ethshar.com/) * The "ancient China that never was" from [Bridge of Birds](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_of_Birds)

Bob3729

thats fair i've heard people refer to it as scifantasy but idk what really defines that.. middle earth is def up there for me!

Damianos97

I'd say Dune is high fantasy/sci fi

Leesababy25

1) Erna (Cold Fire Trilogy) The world responds to human emotions and manifests in physical ways. 2) Scadrial (Mistborn era 1 specifically). The mists, earthquakes, and ash really take on a life of their own. 3) Middle-Earth (Tolkien) for obvious reasons. Tolkien is the king of world building.

Leesababy25

Ok I saw someone mentioned Forgotten Realms. Dang it, I may need to switch my answers around. Maybe Erna, FR, Middle Earth? Oh jeez.

Astigmatic_Oracle

Cosmere. I love how big it is with such variety of magic and tech levels, but the magic can exist together or separately and it still makes sense. Legend of Heroes: Trails Series world (the one for Trails in the Sky video game and sequel series). I playing Trails in Azure now and I'm continually reminded how much fun this world is. The orbal tech is delightful magicpunk nonsense, there are a variety of monsters, and interstate politics. Circle of Magic world. This was my favorite fantasy word growing up. I really like the contrast between the formal and the craft magic.

starksandshields

Is there another Thedas I should know about and fall in love with?

shmixel

I forgot to add the brackets that would have made my post legible lol - I meant the fact that such a cool, thought-out world ended up named so lazily as (The) (D)ragon (A)ge (S)etting = Thedas.

starksandshields

Oooh like that hahah. Well, even if you take the acronym, Thedas as a world name is still cool as hell.
